  • Old Germanic Heritage in Metal Music
Lorin Renodeyn Historical Linguistics and Literature Studies Old Germanic Heritage In Metal Music A Comparative Study Of Present-day Metal Lyrics And Their Old Germanic Sources Promotor: Prof. Dr. Luc de Grauwe Vakgroep Duitse Taalkunde Preface In recent years, heathen past of Europe has been experiencing a small renaissance. Especially the Old Norse / Old Germanic neo-heathen (Ásatrú) movement has gained popularity in some circles and has even been officially accepted as a religion in Iceland and Norway among others1. In the world of music, this renaissance has led to the development of several sub-genres of metal music, the so-called ‘folk metal’, ‘Viking Metal’ and ‘Pagan Metal’ genres. Acknowledgements First and foremost I would like to thank my promoter, prof. dr. Luc de Grauwe, for allowing me to choose the subject for this dissertation and for his guidance in the researching process. Secondly I would like to thank Sofie Vanherpen for volunteering to help me with practical advice on the writing process, proof reading parts of this dissertation, and finding much needed academic sources. Furthermore, my gratitude goes out to Athelstan from Forefather and Sebas from Heidevolk for their co- operation in clarifying the subjects of songs and providing information on the sources used in the song writing of their respective bands. I also want to thank Cris of Svartsot for providing lyrics, translations, track commentaries and information on how Svartsot’s lyrics are written. Last but not least I want to offer my thanks to my family and friends who have pointed out interesting facts and supported me in more than one way during the writing of this dissertation.

  • Running Head: NATIONAL IMAGERY in FINNISH FOLK METAL 1
Running head: NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 1 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Renée Barbosa Moura Master‟s thesis Digital Culture University of Jyväskylä Department of Art and Culture Studies Jyväskylä 2014 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 2 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty Department Humanities Art and Culture Studies Author Renée Barbosa Moura Title National Imagery in FFM: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Subject Level Digital Culture MA Thesis Month and year Number of pages June 2014 90 pages Abstract Folk metal is a music genre originated from heavy metal music. For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness.

  • Contact Between Scandinavia and Byzantium in the Albums »The Varangian Way« (2007) and »Stand up and Fight« (2011) by the Finnish Band Turisas
Antje Bosselmann-Ruickbie Heavy Metal Meets Byzantium! Contact between Scandinavia and Byzantium in the Albums »The Varangian Way« (2007) and »Stand Up and Fight« (2011) by the Finnish Band Turisas »Diversity is what unites us!« Turisas: »The March of the Varangian Guard« Byzantium as a research subject fi lls entire libraries, but has not had as much impact on popular culture as, for example, the Classical world or the Vikings. Particularly in music, there is hardly any echo of this empire, which existed for more than a thousand years as the continuation of the Roman Empire, thus being the longest existing medieval empire (4th-15th centuries). The Finnish Heavy Metal band Turisas has focused on the subject of Byzantium and its relations with Scandinavia. They have not only devoted a song to Byzantium but created two concept albums on the migration of the »Eastern Vikings«, the Varangians, to Constantinople (today Istanbul) and their ex- periences with the Byzantine Empire 1 : »The Varangian Way« 2 (2007, fi g. 1-2), and »Stand Up and Fight« 3 (2011, fi g. 3). The fi rst album describes the journey of a group of Scan- dinavians along the »Way of the Varangians to the Greeks«, as it was called in a 12th-century chronicle 4 , to Constantino- ple via Holmgard (Novgorod), the waterways and the feared Dnieper Rapids (see cover art on the album’s back, fi g. 2). The fi rst album ends with the magnifi cent epic hymn on Fig. 1 Cover of the album »The Varangian Way« by Turisas (2007). – (© Century the capital of the Byzantine Empire, the »Miklagard Over- Media Records, with kind permission).

_Cultural Heritage and History in the Metal Scene _reem saouma_sophia molpheta simon pille_stefan de klepper Cultural heritage and History in the Metal Scene Cultural Heritage And History in the Metal Scene Belvedere Chair in The Chairgroup Land Use Planning Roel During, Marieke Muilwijk Wageningen, October 2007 Stefan de Klepper_forest and nature conservation Sophia Molpheta_landscape architecture and planning Simon Pille_landscape architecture and planning Reem Saouma_landscape architecture and planning abstract abstract This paper represents an inquiry on the use of history and cultural heritage in the metal scene. It is an attempt to show how history and cultural heritage can possibly be spread among people using an unconventional way. The followed research method was built on an explorative study that included an analysis of elements of the music, such as lyrics, performance and fashion, together with interviews of bands and people from the metal scene. However, the study focused on five different metal styles in Europe: the early metal (60’s and early 70’s), The new wave of British heavy metal (around the 80’s), the Swedish death metal (’90-present), the Norwegian black metal (’90-present) and the folk metal (mid 90’s-present). The analysis shows that cultural history plays a role in certain styles of metal or particular bands. Especially in Black metal and in the closely related Viking metal, the use of history and cultural heritage is most common. There are bands within these styles that tell stories through their lyrics and express the historical feeling by the overall image and appearances at concerts. The research shows how history and cultural heritage are used by many bands as an inspiration as well as how it can play a role in forming a common identity among fans and musicians.

  • Vikings, Norse Mythology, and Medievalism in Nordic Extreme Metal Music
“A great heathen fist from the North” Vikings, Norse Mythology, and Medievalism in Nordic Extreme Metal Music. Ashley Walsh Master’s Thesis for Nordic Viking and Medieval Culture- ILN UNIVERSITETET I OSLO Autumn 2013 2 © Ashley Walsh 2013 «A great heathen fist from the North»: Vikings, Norse Mythology, and Medievalism in Nordic Extreme Metal Ashley Walsh http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo 3 Summary Viking metal is a dynamic and popular subgenre of metal music of burgeoning popularity coming primarily from Nordic countries. These musicians use their nations’ Viking histories and saga material as inspiration for their lyrics and nostalgic reimaginings of the past are used to make commentaries on modern society and hopes for the future. Viking metal bands use the Middle Ages and the Viking Age as a screen upon which to play with nostalgic imaginings of what life was like then or at least how it should have been based upon aspects of the collective memory of their communities which can include the works of historians and that of artists and political figures. They use this as a means of criticizing the modern Christian world they perceive as being weaker than the ancient one. The three main components of Viking metal are: • The idealization of a national past from which an ethnic identity can be constructed on a national, Scandinavian, or pan-Nordic level. • A staunch opposition to Christianity that is based on the perceived oppression of their ancestors in the Viking Age for which they lust for vengeance. This vengeance is described as taking place in a grand Ragnarok-inspired battle between the pagan forces and the Christian.

The rise of interest in heavy metal academically reflects the growth of the genre as a normal or con- tested part of everyday lives around the globe. The aim of this series is to provide a home and focus for the growing number of monographs and edited collections that analyse heavy metal and other heavy music; to publish work that fits within the emergent subject field of metal music studies; that is, work that is critical and inter-disciplinary across the social sciences and humanities; to publish work that is of interest to and enhances wider disciplines and subject fields across social sciences and the humanities; and to support the development of early career researchers through providing opportunities to convert their doctoral theses into research monographs.
