Band: Timo Tolkki's Avalon (FIN) Genre: Symphonic Power Metal Label: Frontiers Records Albumtitle: Angels Of The Apocalypse Duration: 50:28 Min Releasedate: 16.05.2014 So there it is, the continuation of the new project of Stratovarius' God of strings Timo Tolkki. The concept album "Angels of the Apocalypse" reports on four angels, which reflect the four elements and which are able to travel through time. Furthermore it's about the induction of the Judgment Day. Mister Tolkki got several well-known guest stars on the micro for this epic tale, what surely gains him a few points. Therefore one gets to listen to the powerfull voice of Virgin Steele's Shouter David DeFeis, as well as to the voices of Floor Jansen (current voice of Nightwish), Simone Simons (Epica), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire), Zachary Stevens (Savatage) and the slightly less known Ladies Elize Ryd (Amaranth) and Caterine Nix, who works currently at her debut album, which is produced by Tolkki as well. Regarding the vocals there's therefore surely nothing to nag about and many facets are served. Musically, drummer Tuomo Lassila is in first place of the availability. He played from 1987 til 1995 personally alongside of Tolkki and he was currently on the road with the band Conquest. The chemistry is right there, what can be felt and heard due to the new songs. Keyboardist Antti Ikonen was equally long in Stratovarius working with Tolkki and on the new work he also does his job masterly great. After the completely chanted solo and somehow goosebumps causing intro, it directly starts off with "Jerusalem is Falling". -

Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Sarah and Michael, the twins, told all about their trip to space camp. They’re practically astronauts already. Randy told about skiing in Chile in July! I’ve never even been skiing in January. Julie flew in a hot air balloon, and Steve built a car, though I’m pretty sure his dad did most of the work. Their summers were all so exciting, so interesting, so unique, that I knew my summer vacation story had to be absolutely amazing. I wanted them to fall out of their seats for the sheer thrill of it! Do you want to hear my story? You might want to strap on a seat belt. Summer started out in the usual way with a bus ride home. I’m the first one on and the last one off, so it was just me and bus driver Fran left on the bus when a hail storm ripped through the sky like my big brother opening a box of marshmallow cereal. The hail stones were so big that they tore right through the bus hood and crushed the engine. Well, the bus wouldn’t go anywhere without an engine, but I got an idea. -

Especially the Old Norse / Old Germanic neo-heathen (Ásatrú) movement has gained popularity in some circles and has even been officially accepted as a religion in Iceland and Norway among others1. In the world of music, this renaissance has led to the development of several sub-genres of metal music, the so-called ‘folk metal’, ‘Viking Metal’ and ‘Pagan Metal’ genres. Luc de Grauwe, for allowing me to choose the subject for this dissertation and for his guidance in the researching process. For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness. -
