Diminishing daylight hours and falling temperatures induce trees and shrubs to prepare for winter, and the colour changes we see are the result of transformations in leaf pigment – as the production of chlorophyll ceases, yellow, orange and red pigments become visible. Variations in seasonal temperatures affect the timing of autumn colours, but in a typical year the best time to visit Westonbirt or Batsford is around the third week in October. If you want to see colours at their best, check their websites for up-to-date seasonal information – and try to avoid weekends when visitor numbers are particularly heavy. You can avoid the crowds by going for a peaceful walk in the countryside, where you will often see a delightful mix of autumn colour along deciduous hedgerows and tree-lined country lanes. Keep an eye open for colour in less obvious places, in little things, and your efforts will be richly rewarded.

It marked the start of a new journey for our Year 7 and Year 12 students, and staff and students have worked hard to make Starting back after the holidays Blockley School children were able to them feel welcome and supported as they adapt to their new routines. take advantage of their new kitchen installed with a grant of £46K from Over 200 children joined us in Year 7 and over 150 young adults entered the Education Funding Agency during the summer holidays. The number of GCSE exceeded with great benefit to all pupils. It was ‘To encourage and students with top grades has risen again this support ‘pupil voice’ and more pupil led activities.’ An excellent range year with around 20% of the cohort getting of tasks had been designed and completed and throughout the year between 5 and 12 GCSE A*-A grades. At A level more pupil led activities were suggested by the children and around a fifth of all the grades awarded were A* or A, with nearly half of incorporated into the plan. One of the most successful was the all grades being A*, A or B. Not to be outdone by senior sixth form creation of Y5 Huff and Puff Play Leaders. New for this academic year, Event Evaluations from the Blockley Young Leaders has also effectively supported pupil voice. Eleven students achieved all A and A* grades at A level. There were also plenty of smiles as students received their GCSE results this summer. At the top end almost a fifth of all grades awarded were A or A* and 30 students achieved 5 or more A and A* grades. Over three quarters of students achieved A*-C in both Maths and in two or more sciences. In line with many other schools nationally the figure of five A*-C including English and Mathematics showed a dip against last year's outstanding results at a disappointing 54%, which was lower than in previous years and lower than the school anticipated. During the summer holiday a group of excited Year 5 students from our primary partnership schools were welcomed to school to take part in a special ‘Space, Satellites and Weather’ workshop. They took part in a variety of activities ranging from tracking sun spots to releasing a weather balloon into the atmosphere. Their balloon travelled to a height of 80,000 feet and landed just past the Severn estuary in a maize maze. Parents, students and teachers were treated to amazing pictures of the edges of space, the Severn estuary and various cloud formations. This year we will be offering over 90 Extra Time Clubs which are run by both teachers and external coaches; this gives students the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities. If your child would like to join a club, please pick up an Extra Time Programme from Chipping Norton School reception, or look on the school website.

There has been much in the news about tax avoidance and it seems that little is being done to make the system fairer for the millions of people who pay their tax & pay it on time. In my mind, the simplest way to stop avoidance is to Paying ensure that everyone, whether it be an individual or a company, pays tax on their income derived in this country. The problem we have though is that Parliament has made a rod for its own back by allowing the setup of trusts & avoidance Too Much schemes, particularly those that allow companies to pay tax in other low tax jurastictions. It is up to Parliament to legislate & up to government agencies to police that legislation. If however, the legislation is ineffective then both Tax? companies & individuals will seek ways of avoiding paying tax. With an election coming up perhaps it is time that we, Contact the taxpayers, put pressure on politicians so that a fairer system is put in place. There is no doubt in my mind that this will not only boost tax revenues but will also enable a new government to reduce taxation for all.

Robb Eden Also in the news are the thorny issues relating to the 40% tax threshold and inheritance tax. It is incredible that so for: many people are paying 40% tax on modest incomes. When nurses, police, firefighters & teachers are caught in this net there is something wrong. Most people don’t mind paying tax but when a large Accounts Preparation & Analysis proportion of their income is taken away they start to resent paying tax at all. With this in mind I should mention inheritance tax. Again & again we are reminded that we do not pay tax on tax in this country. It seems that the bright PAYE & Book-keeping spark at HMRC who wants people to pay inheritance tax before they die has not only disregarded this but, somewhere Vat Returns along the line, has forgotten that inheritance tax is a tax on tax, as are many of our other taxes. 54 GYM PERSONAL FITNESS THERAPY INJURY MEMBERSHIP TRAINING CLASSES ROOMS REHABILITATION The Benefits of Resistance Training

Last month I touched briefly on resistance training (or exercising with weights). So I will start off by reminding you that this WILL NOT BUILD BIG BULKY MUSCLES! The idea of exercising with weights is to create a strong, lean and fit body, well able to deal with the stresses and strains of everyday life, increasing your metabolism and protecting you from injury. Let’s explore this in more detail. • Strong, fit and lean; using weights makes you stronger, not necessarily bigger. A well designed resistance training plan will increase your fitness levels as the body adapts to the new stresses it is experiencing. Your body shape will also start to change, something that simply doing cardiovascular exercise won’t do. • Stresses and strains of everyday life; ever had a day in the garden and not been able to move the next day? Ever been on a really long walk and been stiff and sore even a few days afterwards? Weights make your body a lot more able to cope with this type of problem. • Increasing your metabolism; very simple this one, more muscle fibres working means your metabolism is faster, which means you burn more calories and lose weight without trying! • Protecting you from injury; have you ever lifted something up that seems quite insignificant and put your back out or hurt your knee? By preparing your body for the stresses of lifting, resistance work will help prevent this from happening. You know where we are if you want to talk more about how we can help!
