The Welsh breed of cattle is considered a very valuable one in Great Britain. The cows are good milkers, but the breed is chiefly famous for its feeding qualities and the admitted excellence of the carcass, the latter being a prime favorite with English butchers. If we grant that the modern beef animal should be considered mainly from the point of view of economy in production, the above characteristics of the Welsh breed seem to entitle it to consideration. Youatt, writing of Welsh cattle seventy years ago, said: Great Britain does not afford a more useful animal. * * * They combine to a considerable degree, and as far, perhaps, as they can be combined, the two opposite qualities of being very fair milkers with a propensity to fatten. The meat is generally beautifully marbled. It is equal to that of the Scotch cattle, and some epicures prefer it. They thrive in every situation. They will live where others starve, and they will rapidly outstrip most others when they have plenty of good pasture. * * * Great numbers of them are brought to the London market. They stand their journey well and find a ready sale, for they rarely disappoint the butcher, but on the contrary prove better than appearance and touch indicate. The above description seems to apply equally well to the present day. -

Tracing the problems faced by British rare breed producers What’s the real issue behind the Horsemeat scandal? The ‘Horsemeat Scandal’ revealed a fundamental breakdown in the meat supply chain and a complete disconnection between us, the public, and the food that we eat. 100% traceability is a crucial requirement for protecting our edible biodiversity, an issue particularly relevant to the sheep and cattle industries. Traditional rare breed producers up and down the country are fighting an uphill battle to keep these products on our plates. With the current system favouring larger, fast maturing, commercial breeds, it is up to us to offer the much needed support to these farmers. The ‘Horsemeat Scandal’ showed the scale of the task many of our rare breed producers are facing. However the sensational stories which shocked the nation largely excluded the plight of the small scale producer. It is easy to get hung up about the labelling of horse meat as beef but isn’t it equally scandalous that wonderful British breeds - such as Blue Grey cattle, Old Gloucester cattle and Herdwick Sheep, with all their unique qualities - are being lost in a mountain of nameless meat! At a time when meat consumption is at its highest ever levels, we have a responsibility to be responsible consumers. There has to be a very real and drastic change in the way we think about and buy meat. What can you as the consumer do? At a very basic level, we need to show that there is a demand to know what we’re eating. -

EDITORIAL It seems not very long ago when I penned the last editorial, but as they say time marches on and we are already into Autumn, certainly down here in Wales the trees have shed many of their leaves, in fact some began in early September. In this edition I am delighted that Joe Henson has agreed to update his 1998 article on the Bemborough Flock and in particular his work with the establishment to the RBST. It really is fascinating reading and although I have been a member of the Society since 1996 I have learnt a huge amount particularly as one of my rams comes from the RASE flock and Joe‟s article fills in a number of gaps in my knowledge. As you will see in the AGM Report, Pat Quinn has stepped down as President and Robert Boodle has taken over that position with Judy Wilkie becoming Vice President. On a personal basis, I would like to thank Pat Quinn for her willing help in supplying articles for the Newsletter and the appointment of Judy Wilkie is a fitting tribute to someone who has worked tirelessly over many years for the Society – thank you and well done to you both. -

Last year’s Inaugural Sale proved to be a tremendous success with an excellent entry, trade and sale atmosphere, we hope we can repeat it this year. May we once again thank all breeders and owners for their entries, numbers are greater than last year and the support of this Sale is most appreciated. We have made a few changes this year mainly in the sale layout. The Poultry Sale will be con- ducted in the Sheep Pens and both the Cotswold and Gloucestershire Old Spots will be sold through the raised sheep ring to enhance the sale. The following pages outline this years quality entries and we look forward to seeing both Vendors and Purchasers again on Saturday, 4th. The Stoneleigh Herd
HERD FEATURE THE STONELEIGH HERD The Stoneleigh Herd of Sussex cattle was founded in 2002, a year after Debbie Dann and Alan Hunt had bought the RASE’s herd of rare breed White Park Cattle. White Parks, for all their good looks and photogenic charm, are not the most commercial of breeds so they wanted a breed to complement the White Parks and that would pay the bills and ensure the cattle weren’t just a glorified hobby. After looking at a number of native breeds the selection was narrowed down to South Devons and Sussex (Debbie is originally from Hersmonceux in East Sussex). Sussex easily trumped the South Devons! The dispersal of Mike Cushing’s Coombe Ash Herd in May 2002 provided the ideal opportunity to buy some foundation cows and four cows with calves at foot and back in calf again found themselves travelling up the M40 to Warwickshire. Coombe Ash Godinton 5th, bought as a calf at foot from the Coombe Ash dispersal sale and her heifer calf summer 2013 Debbie’s day job at that time was to run all the competitive classes for the Royal Show and Alan was and still is the Estate Manager for the Royal Showground’s farmland. Since 2007 Debbie has been Breed Secretary for the Longhorn Cattle Society. This means that both Alan and Debbie have full time jobs and the cattle are mostly managed outside of work hours and have to be pretty low maintenance. Stoneleigh Godinton 2nd and calf Cows are housed over the winter as all the grazing is rented and the cattle are easier to manage when they are indoors when the owners are working full time.
