A Short History Of Brothels [Important Disclaimer: No, I did not pick up any of these first hand!] ...A category known by any number of different names...all best left unsaid. Well, it is the oldest profession in the world, so I suppose Brothels must go back pretty far. “The first brothels proper seem to have been in ancient Egypt...But certainly it was the Greeks who first put the brothel on an official footing. The celebrated Athenian lawmaker and lyric poet Solon founded state brothels and taxed prostitutes on their earnings in the 5th century BC.” [http:// www.atrium-media.com] But, we’re not likely to find any covers from the Ancient World, or even the Middle Ages, so let’s just skip up to the founding of America. Interestingly enough, prostitution and the resulting brothels seem to have been the products of civilization, as there are no recorded anthropological references to prostitution being found in primitive societies [Isn’t that interesting!]. Thus, it was that Europeans who introduced such to the New World, and it was certainly in evidence with the armies of the American Revolution even before the formal establishment of this country. One hundred years later, brothels were common all across the country [Capitalism as work!]. During the first half of the 20th century, France and Italy were famous for their brothels. Some Paris establishments, such as le Chabanais and le Sphinx, were internationally known for the luxury they provided. In most European countries, brothels were made illegal after World War II. France outlawed brothels in 1946 and Italy made them illegal in 1959. -

1 Prostitution, the Sex Trade, and the COVID-19 Pandemic by Melissa Farley [1] Logos - a journal of modern society & culture Spring 2020 Volume 19 #1 The COVID-19 pandemic has had immediate and severe impacts on women in the sex trade who are already among the most vulnerable women on the planet. Because of quarantines, social distancing, governments’ neglect of the poor, systemic racism in all walks of life including healthcare, failure to protect children from abuse, and the predation of sex buyers and pimps – the coronavirus pandemic threatens already-marginalized women’s ability to survive. Even before the pandemic, sex buyers and pimps inflicted more sexual violence on women in the sex trade than any other group of women who have been studied by researchers (Hunter, 1994; Farley, 2017). The greater the poverty, the greater the likelihood of violent exploitation in the sex trade, as noted 26 years ago by Dutch researcher Ine Vanwesenbeeck (1994). This article will discuss the impact of COVID-19 as it increases harms resulting from the poverty and violent exploitation of prostitution, an oppressive institution built on foundations of sexism and racism. Women in the sex trade are in harm’s way for many reasons including a lack of food, shelter, and healthcare, all of which increase their risk of contracting COVID19. Understanding what it’s like to be anxious about access to food and shelter is key to understanding the risks taken by people in prostitution. Knowing they were risking their lives, many women prostituted during the pandemic. “Poverty will kill us before the coronavirus,” said an Indian woman in prostitution (Dutt, 2020). -

The Deesis represents the figure of Jesus as Pantocrator – Lord of all - with Mary and John the Baptist on either side raising their hands in prayerful intercession for humanity. This mosaic dates from the 1200s - a masterpiece of late Byzantine art. Helen pointed out to me that she had created an impressed background on the gold of the icon to replicate the shell-like pattern of the tesserae on the original mosaic. -

IMS Study Group ‘Cantus Planus’ – 2014 Venice Meeting Session 1. Venice - Monday 28 July 16:30-17:30 Chair: Nausica Morandi Peter Jeffery The Choir of San Marco in a 13th-Century Mosaic In the basilica of San Marco in Venice, a well-known mosaic of the thirteenth century depicts two scenes: one in which the Venetians pray for the relics of Saint Mark’s body to be rediscovered, the other in which the discovery was made. There can be no doubt that two scenes are shown to be happening within St. Mark’s basilica itself. However, not much attention has been paid to the fact that the figures shown in the first scene include a choir of men and boys, though they are not shown singing but apparently bowing down in prayer. Detailed examination of the positioning, the vestments, the texts, the furnishings, when compared with the prescriptions of liturgical ceremonials, make it possible to specify what liturgical act is being represented, and to locate this within a tradition going back to a particular recension of the ninth-tenth-century Ordines Romani. This in turn helps answer some questions about the early rite of Venice, and about the Carolingian-era spread of the Roman liturgy to other parts of Europe.
