Martin Suter, born in Zurich in 1948, is a writer, colum- nist (he used to write the weekly column Business Class and is the author of the Geri Weibel stories) and screen- play author (his credits include the screenplay to the film Julia’s Disappearance, 2009). His novels – the latest being The Last Weynfeldt – have enjoyed huge international success. Suter lives with his family in Spain and Guatemala. Schopenhauer year 2010 150th anniversary of his death: 21 September A romping debut, full of wit and with an impressive command of language. A sensual journey through philosophy and imagination. The main characters: Arthur Schopenhauer and Lord Byron – and Teresa. He is done with studying – now he wants to live. A month-long journey takes the young Schopenhauer from Dresden to Venice, from Goethe to Lord Byron, over rugged mountains and through broad valleys into the labyrinth of canals – and the maelstrom of reality. Christoph Poschenrieder gives us a Schopenhauer who is somewhat different from what he is generally imagined. His hero still sees the world through the lens of his philosophy, it is true, but that philosophy, like the man himself, is surprisingly sensual and lively. Christoph Poschenrieder The World in the Head Schopenhauer would be only too pleased to see philosophers and writers reacting to his ideas – to see Hegel giving up his throne, and the elderly Goethe paying tribute to him, a mere 30 year old. But publication of his ground- breaking work has been delayed. And so Schopenhauer leaves Dresden for Italy in the late summer of 1818 without his book in his suitcase – he is still a nobody. Even before he arrives he attracts the attention of Metternich’s secret police: Goethe’s note recommending him to Lord Byron – a man with a wide reputation as a poet and as a figure of scandal – casts suspicion on Schopen hauer and makes him unwelcome in Austrian-occu- Christoph pied Veneto.     A Short History Of Brothels [Important Disclaimer: No, I did not pick up any of these first hand!] ...A category known by any number of different names...all best left unsaid. Well, it is the oldest profession in the world, so I suppose Brothels must go back pretty far. “The first brothels proper seem to have been in ancient Egypt...But certainly it was the Greeks who first put the brothel on an official footing. The celebrated Athenian lawmaker and lyric poet Solon founded state brothels and taxed prostitutes on their earnings in the 5th century BC.” [http:// www.atrium-media.com] But, we’re not likely to find any covers from the Ancient World, or even the Middle Ages, so let’s just skip up to the founding of America. Interestingly enough, prostitution and the resulting brothels seem to have been the products of civilization, as there are no recorded anthropological references to prostitution being found in primitive societies [Isn’t that interesting!]. Thus, it was that Europeans who introduced such to the New World, and it was certainly in evidence with the armies of the American Revolution even before the formal establishment of this country. One hundred years later, brothels were common all across the country [Capitalism as work!]. During the first half of the 20th century, France and Italy were famous for their brothels. Some Paris establishments, such as le Chabanais and le Sphinx, were internationally known for the luxury they provided. In most European countries, brothels were made illegal after World War II. France outlawed brothels in 1946 and Italy made them illegal in 1959.

    1 Prostitution, the Sex Trade, and the COVID-19 Pandemic by Melissa Farley [1] Logos - a journal of modern society & culture Spring 2020 Volume 19 #1 The COVID-19 pandemic has had immediate and severe impacts on women in the sex trade who are already among the most vulnerable women on the planet. Because of quarantines, social distancing, governments’ neglect of the poor, systemic racism in all walks of life including healthcare, failure to protect children from abuse, and the predation of sex buyers and pimps – the coronavirus pandemic threatens already-marginalized women’s ability to survive. Even before the pandemic, sex buyers and pimps inflicted more sexual violence on women in the sex trade than any other group of women who have been studied by researchers (Hunter, 1994; Farley, 2017). The greater the poverty, the greater the likelihood of violent exploitation in the sex trade, as noted 26 years ago by Dutch researcher Ine Vanwesenbeeck (1994). This article will discuss the impact of COVID-19 as it increases harms resulting from the poverty and violent exploitation of prostitution, an oppressive institution built on foundations of sexism and racism. Women in the sex trade are in harm’s way for many reasons including a lack of food, shelter, and healthcare, all of which increase their risk of contracting COVID19. Understanding what it’s like to be anxious about access to food and shelter is key to understanding the risks taken by people in prostitution. Knowing they were risking their lives, many women prostituted during the pandemic. “Poverty will kill us before the coronavirus,” said an Indian woman in prostitution (Dutt, 2020).

  • Germany and New Zealand, a Comparison in Prostitution Laws
    GERMANY NEW ZEALAND A Comparison in Prostitution Laws 2002-2017 catwinternational.org Why Germany and New Zealand? People caught in the global sex trade, who are overwhelmingly women and girls, are among the world's most marginalized. Yet, in the 21st century, states too often treat them as criminals. Some countries have acknowledged that the common approach of criminalizing people in prostitution is harmful. Sweden, for example, recognized prostitution as an exploitive system of gender-based violence and discrimination and consequently decriminalized only prostituted people, offering them access to support services, while holding sex buyers accountable. Other countries — most prominently Germany and New Zealand — gave state-sanctioned approval to the sex trade and framed prostitution as a legitimate industry. The laws governing prostitution in Germany and New Zealand are often portrayed as markedly different from each other. A closer look reveals that the distinction between the German and the New Zealand models is minimal and neither national legislation achieves its stated goals. While the German law is now branded a failure, the New Zealand framework is upheld as the "progressive" approach to addressing prostitution. Both laws, however, expand the sex trade, empower sex buyers, legitimize pimps and brothel owners, and increase sex trafficking. A Note on Data Reliable data regarding the sex trade is hard to come by due to a lack of political will from governments and research institutions, including those within the United Nations system, to study prostitution and its effects. Standard research methodologies are difficult to apply in data collection given the way the sex trade operates, regardless of the legal framework in the country.
