    Wikipedia beetles Dung beetles are beetles that feed on feces. Some species of dung beetles can bury dung times their own mass in one night. Many dung beetles, known as rollers , roll dung into round balls, which are used as a food source or breeding chambers. Others, known as tunnelers , bury the dung wherever they find it. A third group, the dwellers , neither roll nor burrow: they simply live in manure. They are often attracted by the dung collected by burrowing owls. There are dung beetle species of different colours and sizes, and some functional traits such as body mass or biomass and leg length can have high levels of variability. All the species belong to the superfamily Scarabaeoidea , most of them to the subfamilies Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae of the family Scarabaeidae scarab beetles. As most species of Scarabaeinae feed exclusively on feces, that subfamily is often dubbed true dung beetles. There are dung-feeding beetles which belong to other families, such as the Geotrupidae the earth-boring dung beetle. The Scarabaeinae alone comprises more than 5, species. The nocturnal African dung beetle Scarabaeus satyrus is one of the few known non-vertebrate animals that navigate and orient themselves using the Milky Way. Dung beetles are not a single taxonomic group; dung feeding is found in a number of families of beetles, so the behaviour cannot be assumed to have evolved only once. Lillebø Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.74847 Abstract Highest extinction risk and consequently biodiversity loss are predicted to occur in inver- tebrates, specifically insects, and these declines are expected to cascade onto ecosystem functioning and human well-being. Although this knowledge is intrinsically present in more traditional communities, in more urban environments, mapping ecosystem ser - vices can be an important tool to raise people’s awareness on the importance of pre - serving insect diversity. After an extensive revision of the available literature, we used a rule-based approach to assess the provisioning, regulating and maintenance, and cul - tural services delivered by insects. We followed the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) and identified several potential indicators that may help underpin the mapping and valuation of the services delivered by insects. From our search, we extracted a total of 73 indicators, divided as 17 Provisional indicators, 27 Regulation and Maintenance indicators, and 29 Cultural indicators. We concluded that insects are providers of services in the three major ‘Sections’ of ecosystem services defined by CICES. Despite the lack of recognition of provisioning and cultural services, the indicators provided may help to raise awareness on the importance of the little things the run the world, in order to preserve traditional and technological uses of insects and their services.

Nurgül BEGİÇ* Özet Tarihsel sürecin başlangıcından itibaren İnsanoğlu, öncelikle olumsuz hava şartlarından korunmak için vücudunu örtme ihtiyacı hissetmiştir. Bu amaçla çevresinde bulunan bitki lifleri ve hayvan postlarından yararlanmıştır. Tekstilin bulunup kullanılmaya başlamasıyla birlikte böcekler de boya ve hammadde kaynağı olmuştur. Bazı böceklere işlevleri nedeniyle özel değerler atfedilmiş ve buna bağlı olarak estetik, sanat ve moda tasarımı alanında kullanılmıştır. İpek böceğinin ürettiği lifin dokumada, bazı böceklerin ise boyamada kullanılmaya başlamasıyla birlikte kullanımı alanı genişlemiştir. Bu çalışmada; böceklerin işlevleri nedeniyle farklı medeniyetler tarafından manevi değer ve özel anlamlar yüklendiği, bazı böceklerin ise lif ve boyarmadde olarak kullanılması, yaşam döngüsündeki işlevi nedeniyle kendisine atfedilen anlamları sanatçılara ilham kaynağı olarak tasarım ve moda alanında bir mesaj objesi olarak değerlendirilmesi incelenecektir. Bu amaçla öncelikle yazılı ve dijital literatür taraması yapılacak ve somut örneklerle açıklanacaktır. Anahtar kelimeler: Entomoloji, Tekstil, Moda, Süsleme, Tasarım.
