PART 3. BUTTERFLIES OF THE CHYULU RANGE. A systematic list of the species taken by the Museum Expedition to the Hills. April-July, 1938. By V. G. L. VAN SOMEREN,F.L.S., F.R.E.S., Etc. INTRODUCTION. The following account of the Lepidoptera (Rhopaloc.era) taken by members of the Museum Expedition to the Chyulu Range, is mainly a systematic list of the species obtained. At the time of the visit, April to July, 1938 (that is just toward the end, and after the long rains) insect life was remark• ably scarce, and although systematic search was made over all portions of the hills from 3,000 to 7,000 feet, at no time were butterflies numerous. The material taken can be considered representative of the range for that particular season, but there is little doubt that insect life would be more plentiful just after the short rains, as it undoubtedly is on the surrounding plains, especially in the Kibwezi- Voi areas. In spite of the paucity of insect life, certain new records have been established, thus Papilio hornimani is recorded for the first time from within Kenya boundaries, although known for many years to inhabit the forests of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Charaxes ful• vescens nr. acuminatus, also of Tanganyika, was taken on the range. Two new races of Liptenines of the genus Pentila are recorded, whilst a new ACTaea,a new Papilio, and a new race of Amauris are described. The Lepidoptera collected have a definite relationship to the vegetational zones and the distribution of certain plant species at various altitudes and portions of the hills. -

Lillebø Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.74847 Abstract Highest extinction risk and consequently biodiversity loss are predicted to occur in inver- tebrates, specifically insects, and these declines are expected to cascade onto ecosystem functioning and human well-being. Although this knowledge is intrinsically present in more traditional communities, in more urban environments, mapping ecosystem ser - vices can be an important tool to raise people’s awareness on the importance of pre - serving insect diversity. After an extensive revision of the available literature, we used a rule-based approach to assess the provisioning, regulating and maintenance, and cul - tural services delivered by insects. We followed the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) and identified several potential indicators that may help underpin the mapping and valuation of the services delivered by insects. From our search, we extracted a total of 73 indicators, divided as 17 Provisional indicators, 27 Regulation and Maintenance indicators, and 29 Cultural indicators. We concluded that insects are providers of services in the three major ‘Sections’ of ecosystem services defined by CICES. Despite the lack of recognition of provisioning and cultural services, the indicators provided may help to raise awareness on the importance of the little things the run the world, in order to preserve traditional and technological uses of insects and their services. -

Wildlife & Ecological Investments Field Research Programme 2014 Overview for Balule Game Reserve Contributors - Tomos Avent, Caz Schiess, Henrietta Chilton & Elme Breytenbach In 2012 Wildlife & Ecological Investments started a research and training programme in Struwig Eco Reserve. Since then, over 800 students from more than 20 countries have joined our College, Undergraduate and Masters training programmes in Savannah Ecology, Southern African Conservation, and Bush-craft Training. Our team on the ground have also helped restore and maintain the road network throughout OREC, especially through rock packing and soil filling rill erosion, vegetation clearing, and continued work on mitre drains and bolsters. The purpose of this report is to introduce the ongoing research work on Struwig and present an overview of the data collected so far in 2014. Due to the limited area of operation and traversing on OREC, our research programme has thus far been limited to small-scale bird, invertebrate, habitat, herbivore and predator monitoring projects. In the future we would like to expand our research focus to help address larger questions pertinent to the conservation management of Balule Game Reserve. The following report will be broken down into research themes, first outlining our survey approaches, then summarizing our data and, if appropriate at this point, some research findings. At the end of some sections I suggest some of the further work that would be possible if we are able to expand the programme into a larger area. Among 30 genera of the family, the following four genera exclusively parasitize ground beetles of the family Carabidae: Eutarsopolipus Berlese, 1913 (55 species); Dorsipes Regenfuss, 1968 (18 species); Regenpolipus Husband, 1986 (5 species) and Ovacarus Stannard & Vaishampayan, 1971 (3 species). Only the genus Ovacarus is the endoparasite of the ground beetles and settles in their reproductive tracts. The other three genera are ectoparasites under the elytra of carabid beetles. The mites of the genera Eutarsopolipus, Dorsipes and Ovacarus have been previously recorded from Iran (Hajiqanbar et al., 2007). Based on the study of approximately 400 specimens, we give an overview of the systematics and taxonomy, distribution, dispersal power, and habitat preferences of the carabids belonging to the tribes Anthiini, Helluonini, Dryptini, and Zuphiini in the southern Levant (Egypt: Sinai, Israel and Jordan). We provide identification keys for the members of the given taxa in this region. Eleven species of the Zuphi- itae sensu Ober & Maddison (2008) have previously been published from the southern Levant.
