Hvorledes Norge ble bosatt 1. Om Fornjot og hans ættmenn. Nå skal det fortelles hvorledes Norge først ble bosatt og hvilke kongsætter som oppstod der og i andre land, og hvorfor de het Skjoldunger, Budlunger, Bragninger, Ødlinger, Vølsunger eller Niflunger som kongsættene er kommet fra. Fornjot het en mann og han hadde tre sønner. Den første het Hler, den andre Logi og den tredje Kåri. Sistnevnte rådde for vinden, Logi for ilden og Hler for sjøen. Kåri var far til Jøkul, far til kong Snæ og barna hans var Thorri, Fønn, Drifa og Mjøll. Thorri var en navngjeten konge som rådde over Gotland, Kvenland og Finland. Til ham blotet kvenene for å få snø og godt skiføre. Dette var deres beste tid. Blotet skulle være midt på vinteren, og derfor kalles det siden Thorremåned. Kong Thorri hadde tre barn; sønnene hans het Nor og Gor, og datteren Goi. Goi ble borte og Thorri blotet da en måned senere enn han pleide å blote, og siden kalte de denne måneden de da hadde framfor seg for Goi. Nor og Gor lette etter søsteren sin. Nor hadde store slag vestenfor Kjølen og de kongene som het Vee og Vei, Hunding og Heming ble felt av ham. Nor la så under seg alt land helt til havet. Brødrene møttes i den fjorden som nå heter Norafjord. Derfra for Nor opp på Kjølen og kom der som det heter Ulfamoar, deretter dro han gjennom Østerdalen og siden til Vermaland, til den innsjøen som heter Vænir, og så til havet. Hele dette landet la Nor under seg, alt vestenfor denne grensa. -

De ha närmast framkommit vid eller till följd av den utgrävning av en större gravhög, något yngre än de nyss nämnda, som jag sommaren 1919 hade tillfälle utföra. Även om de därunder gjorda iakttagelserna ej för det nedan utförligast behandlade problemet ha avgörande betydelse, ha de dock spelat en så stor roll för mig vid problemställningens precisering, att jag ber få börja med en kortfattad redogörelse för denna gräv nings allmänna resultat. Sacrifice and Sacrificial Ideology in Old Norse Religion
Sacrifice and Sacrificial Ideology in Old Norse Religion Daniel Bray The practice of sacrifice is often treated as 'the dark side' of Old Norse heathenism, by both medieval Christian commentators and modern scholars alike. However, within Norse religious practice, sacrificial ritual (blot) was one of the most central acts of religious observance. This paper will seek to examine aspects of the significance of blot within Old Norse religion, the ideology of sacrifice as it operated within this tradition and its relation to other Indo-European traditions, and the reactions to the issue of sacrifice by medieval contemporaries and modern scholarship. An examination of Old Norse literature relating to religious practice demonstrates the importance of blot within the religious life of the heathens of Scandinavia. Well over one hundred and fifty references to blot can be found in different sources, including Eddic and skaldic poetry, early historical works and annals, legal material, and saga literature. There are no extant scriptures or religious manuals from the heathen Norse that give a detailed explanation of the theory and operation of sacrifice. However, the accounts of sacrificial practice, taken altogether, provide a wealth of knowledge about how it was performed, by whom and to whom, as well as where, when and under what circumstances it was performed. The Old Norse verb bl6ta, which means 'to sacrifice', also has the extended meaning 'to worship', particularly by means of sacrifice, which testifies to the importance of sacrifice as a form of worship. In a language that had no proper word for its indigenous religion, the word blot had become a by-word for all things heathen, evidenced by terms such as blotdomr, blotskapr, or blotnaor 'heathen worship', bl6thus 'temple', bl6tmaor 'heathen worshipper' and even bl6tguo 'heathen god'.1 A survey of the literature reveals a number of essential features of sacrificial ritual in Old Norse heathenism. -

Its findings are based on an exhaustive study of the numerous texts engaging with this subject, ranging from the Roman era to the publication of the Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus of Olaus Magnus in 1555. The thesis presents and analyses the most common supernatural motifs associated with this Far- Northern area, which include animal transformation, sorcery and pagan worship, as well as speculating about their origins, and analyzes the ways in which such ideas and images evolved, both over time and depending on the nature of the written sources in which they appear. -

It traces through the various traits and stereotypes ascribed to these Other cultural groups, the most prominent being sorcery, nomadism, and being non-agricultural, and shows how the Norse were situated from each. Throughout the sagas and through a lens of Christianity, the Norse position themselves as superior to the Finnar and Skrælingar, and use the negative imagery of these groups to further raise their profile in the narrative. By pulling this relationship apart, I show how the Finnar and Skrælingar are essentially similar in the eyes of the Norse, and further, that the depiction of the Skrælingar is based on a finite model of the Finnar. v Acknowledgements I want to thank Beate Pedersen for putting me onto this general field, and for suggesting I include the Finnar in my study of the sagas' social categories. FINLAND DURING THE FIRST MILLENIUM 1st millennia AD Jouko Pesonen The old sagas contain stories from the ancient times, as in here, in which I have collected, during the last twenty years, pieces of data about the Viking kings and mostly Finnish and Danish Vikings. First they conducted pillaging, later the pillaging transformed into trading and migration over the vast oceans. The sagas are often Norwegian or Dutch. One of the most known scribe of the sagas was Snorri Sturluson, Icelandic priest. Many recordings by eager family researchers were employed among the source materials and used for the interpretations of the studies. One can not trust on only one recording, especially a Russian one. Plenty of insight and interpretation were needed. I can not really base or pinpoint my perception in some particular earlier study. Frá niðjum Fornjóts - Of Fornjót's Ancestors Now we shall speak of how Norway was founded in the beginning, how the line of kings began there or in other lands, and why they are called Skjöldungs, Buđlungs, Bragnings, Öđlings, Völsungs or Niflungs, from which the lines of kings come. There was a man named Fornjót. He had three sons; one was named Hlér(Ægir – a szerk.), the second Logi, and the third Kári. He ruled the winds, but Logi ruled fire, and Hlér ruled the sea. Kári was the father of Jökul, the Glacier, father of King Snae, Snow. The sons of King Snae were Þorri, Fönn, Drífa and Mjöll. Þorri was a wonderful king. He ruled Gotland, Kaenland, and Finland. He celebrated Kaens so that snow was made and travel on skis was good. That is their beginning. The celebration is held in the middle of winter, and from that time on was called the month of Þorri. King Þorri had three children. His sons were called Nórr and Górr, and his daughter Gói. Gói vanished, and Þorri made a sacrifice a month later than he was accustomed to celebrate, and since then the month that begins then was called Gói. Nórr and Górr searched for their sister. Nórr had a great battle west of Kjölu, and the kings fell before him, who were named: Véi and Vei, Hunding, and Heming, and Nórr took control of that land all the way to the sea. -

GRANHOLM GENEALOGY NORSE ROYAL ANCESTRY (Norwegian and Finnish) INTRODUCTION The Norse or Scaninavian mythology has many deities, gods and goddesses. This part begins by listing Norwegian and Finnish ancestors, Njörd and Fjornot. Where the name in the lists are highlighted I have included a biography. There is no clear direct lineage from them, they are intermixed with the Swedish and Danish mythologies. In those separate booklets have I included the information about Odin and others near to him. Here I have shown our lineage from other mythical figures.These lineages do not start from a single person. The lists that follows converge different lineages which all lead to us. So me of the persons are referred to as Kings of Finland. As in all listings of mytological/historical persons there is a gray area where the reader may use his or her imagination in deciding where the transition between myth and history is. But a fact is that somebody was there and had some influence, for instance how a name was established serves as some kind of proof of their existence. See the quotation below: Njörðr's name appears in various place names in Scandinavia, such as Nærdhæwi (now Nalavi), Njærdhavi (now Mjärdevi), Nærdhælunda (now Närlunda), Nierdhatunum (now Närtuna) in Sweden, Njarðvík in eastern Iceland, Njarðarlög and Njarðey (now Nærøy) in Norway. Njörðr's name appears in a word for sponge; Njarðarvöttr. Additionally, in Old Icelandic translations of Classical mythology the Roman god Saturn's name is glossed as "Njörðr". King Thorri of Finland, a descendant of the first king Fornjot, is the 41st great grandfather.
