Kuana Torres Kahele Music can transcend boundaries. Kuana Torres Kahele hopes Hawaiian songs, or mele, can spark something inside of listeners, no matter their culture. “I would hope that Hawaiian music would reach far enough to put a seed into the listener. And what that seed grows into can be a million things ... and you don’t have to be Hawaiian to receive that,” says Kahele.

The Hilo native is no stranger to our PBS Hawai‘i ‘ohana. He’s performed in a previous Nā Mele episode with the trio Nā Palapalai and in a holiday Casey Olsen Tiana Nonosina Liufau special. He continues to weave the past with the present, singing both traditional and original compositions.

Kahele says one of his biggest inspirations is . “We have to have this level of know-how to be able to see nature in a different way so that we can understand it and so that we can also listen to it, in a form or way. Because it’s through that connection that we’re able to write the Hawaiian text or Hawaiian poetry.”

The multi Nā Hōkū Hanohano-award winner embraces his Native Hawaiian Māhealani Mika Hirao-Solem TeHani Gonzado culture in every role he takes on. He’s not only a singer, musician and songwriter, but also a kumu hula, lei maker and instructor and an artisan of Ni‘ihau shell jewelry. When asked what else he wants to accomplish, Kahele says, “I haven’t really thought about it much lately because all I set out to do when I was younger, I’ve done, and actually, I’m still doing it.”
