Story But Fox has an alternate narrative that is derived from her Haudenosaunee heritage. “This year is the 100th anniversary of American women celebrating the right to vote,” Fox said. “But for Haudenosaunee women, that right came about 1,000 years earlier.” In the mid-19th century, European colonial women living in America lacked even the most basic rights, while the Haudenosaunee women living in northern New York state had a powerful political and spiritual voice in all aspects of their community. The Native women picked the leaders, and they grew the food. Nothing could be decided without their input. Even in their creation story, everything is vested in the life-giving force of women. The contact that women’s rights activ- ists in America had with Native American women shaped their thinking in ways that had a critical impact on the struggle for equality, Fox said. But the stories of Indigenous people are often left out of textbooks. “I’m hoping that when people watch this film, it’ll start to make them think about other perspectives in history,” she said. Featured in the Roxbury International Film Festival and in the Woods Hole Film Festival, this 27-minute film follows Mohawk Bear Clan Mother Louise Wahkehrakats: te Herne and Roesch Wagner, a Syracuse University professor in women’s studies, as they work together Without a Whisper: Konnón: Kwe to correct the historical narrative about Fri (11/6) at 9:30pm on GBH 44 the origins of women’s rights in the Tue (11/24) at 9:30pm on GBH WORLD United States.

Fox said she first heard Wagner speak about her research at a conference 15 years ago. “She asked ‘How did these women come upon these ideas? Where did they even think about wanting the right to vote when non-Native women didn’t have any rights?’” she said. “That’s when she started to uncover some of the connections with the women’s rights activists and the Haudenosaunee women.” Wagner met Herne at a sweat lodge ceremony. They discovered their common bond and have been friends and collabo- rators ever since. Four years in the making, the film made its debut at a perfect moment—a century after American women won the right to vote. But for Fox, it’s a story that’s long over- due, especially for Haudenosaunee children. During the day, she works in a public school in northern New York where she teaches Native studies, Native film and tra- ditional arts to high school students, 70% of whom are Native American. “When the students are taught history in their class- rooms, the way they are taught is from somebody else’s point of view, so they’re often left out and underrepresented,” she said. “Even what is represented about them usually isn’t accurate.” With her film, she is hoping to set the A Clan Mother’s Perspective record straight about the critical role that Indigenous women played in shaping the n Without a Whisper: Konnón: Kwe, In the film, Herne reinforces the idea that women’s rights movement in America. Ross, who spent five years in 10 con- centration camps between 1940 and 1945, endured horrific experiences at the hands of the Nazis. To avoid capture, he hid in a tank of excrement. In a brutal beating, his captors broke his back. He was sexually molested by guards.
