Kuana Torres Kahele hopes Hawaiian songs, or mele, can spark something inside of listeners, no matter their culture. “I would hope that Hawaiian music would reach far enough to put a seed into the listener. And what that seed grows into can be a million things ... and you don’t have to be Hawaiian to receive that,” says Kahele. The Hilo native is no stranger to our PBS Hawai‘i ‘ohana. He’s performed in a previous Nā Mele episode with the trio Nā Palapalai and in a holiday Casey Olsen Tiana Nonosina Liufau special. He continues to weave the past with the present, singing both traditional and original compositions. Kahele says one of his biggest inspirations is nature. “We have to have this level of know-how to be able to see nature in a different way so that we can understand it and so that we can also listen to it, in a form or way. Because it’s through that connection that we’re able to write the Hawaiian text or Hawaiian poetry.” The multi Nā Hōkū Hanohano-award winner embraces his Native Hawaiian Māhealani Mika Hirao-Solem TeHani Gonzado culture in every role he takes on. He’s not only a singer, musician and songwriter, but also a kumu hula, lei maker and instructor and an artisan of Ni‘ihau shell jewelry. When asked what else he wants to accomplish, Kahele says, “I haven’t really thought about it much lately because all I set out to do when I was younger, I’ve done, and actually, I’m still doing it.” 3 Glenn Mayeda, Kuana Torres Kahele and Kaulike Pescaia SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY Home is here. 5 6 7 7:00 LUCY WORSLEY’S ROYAL 7:30 NĀ MELE At Halekulani’s House 7:30 HIKI NŌ MYTHS & SECRETS Kings George Without a Key 8:00 NATIVE AMERICA Cities of the Sky III and IV and the Napoleonic War 8:00 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW 9:00 FRONTLINE America After 9/11 8:00 GUILT ON MASTERPIECE Churchill Downs Racetrack, Hour 3 11:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY Parts 1 and 2 9:00 POV SHORTS Where I’m From 10:00 ART IN THE TWENTY-FIRST 10:00 ANISFIELD-WOLF BOOK PBS Hawai‘i is on the air CENTURY Johannesburg AWARDS 2020 24 hours a day, 11:00 TO THE CONTRARY WITH 11:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY BONNIE ERBE seven days a week. 11:30 THE OPEN MIND 12 13 14 7:00 LUCY WORSLEY’S ROYAL 7:30 NĀ MELE Mailani 7:30 HIKI NŌ OVER-THE-AIR MYTHS & SECRETS 8:00 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW 8:00 NATIVE AMERICA Broadcast Channels The Romanovs and the Russian Winterthur Museum Garden and New World Rising Revolution Library, Hour 2 9:00 OPEN A BOOK, OPEN THE (KHET) Channel 11.1 - 11.2 - 11.3 8:00 GUILT ON MASTERPIECE 9:00 AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Sandra WORLD: THE 2021 LIBRARY OF (KMEB) Channel 10.1 - 10.2 - 10.3 Parts 3 and 4 Day O’Connor: The First CONGRESS NATIONAL BOOK 10:00 ART IN THE TWENTY-FIRST 11:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY FESTIVAL CENTURY Berlin 10:00 FRONTLINE Boeing’s Fatal Flaw SPECTRUM 11:00 TO THE CONTRARY WITH 11:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY Basic Cable: Channel 10 BONNIE ERBE High-definition:Channel 1010 11:30 THE OPEN MIND PBS KIDS 24/7: Channel 443 19 20 21 7:00 MUHAMMAD ALI Round One: 7:30 NĀ MELE Ahumanu 7:30 HIKI NŌ HAWAIIAN TELCOM The Greatest (1942-1964) 8:00 MUHAMMAD ALI Round Two: 8:00 MUHAMMAD ALI Round Three: Basic Cable: Channel 11 9:15 MUHAMMAD ALI Round One: What’s My Name (1964-1970) The Rivalry (1970-1974) The Greatest (1942-1964) (encore) 10:00 MUHAMMAD ALI Round Two: 10:00 MUHAMMAD ALI Round Three: High-definition:Channel 1011 11:30 TO THE CONTRARY WITH What’s My Name (1964-1970) The Rivalry (1970-1974) (encore) PBS KIDS 24/7: Channel 96 BONNIE ERBE (encore) 12:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY 12:00 THE OPEN MIND 12:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY DirecTV PBS Hawai‘i: Channel 11 PBS Kids 24/7: Channel 11-3 26 27 28 Dish Network 7:00 THE QUEEN’S GARDEN 7:30 NĀ MELE Kuana Torres Kahale 7:30 HIKI NŌ 8:00 ELIZABETH IS MISSING 8:00 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW 8:00 IN THEIR OWN WORDS PBS Hawai‘i: Channel 11 ON MASTERPIECE Winterthur Museum Garden and Jimmy Carter PBS Kids 24/7: Channel 10 10:00 ART IN THE TWENTY-FIRST Library, Hour 3 9:00 AMERICAN EXPERIENCE CENTURY San Francisco Bay Area 9:00 AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Citizen Hearst, Part 2 of 2 11:00 TO THE CONTRARY WITH Citizen Hearst, Part 1 of 2 11:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY BONNIE ERBE 11:00 AMANPOUR AND COMPANY All programs offer closed-captioning. 11:30 THE OPEN MIND 4 Schedule is subject to change.
