Species Accounts
Species accounts The list of species that follows is a synthesis of all the botanical knowledge currently available on the Nyika Plateau flora. It does not claim to be the final word in taxonomic opinion for every plant group, but will provide a sound basis for future work by botanists, phytogeographers, and reserve managers. It should also serve as a comprehensive plant guide for interested visitors to the two Nyika National Parks. By far the largest body of information was obtained from the following nine publications: • Flora zambesiaca (current ed. G. Pope, 1960 to present) • Flora of Tropical East Africa (current ed. H. Beentje, 1952 to present) • Plants collected by the Vernay Nyasaland Expedition of 1946 (Brenan & collaborators 1953, 1954) • Wye College 1972 Malawi Project Final Report (Brummitt 1973) • Resource inventory and management plan for the Nyika National Park (Mill 1979) • The forest vegetation of the Nyika Plateau: ecological and phenological studies (Dowsett-Lemaire 1985) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 1997 report (Patel 1999) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 2001 report (Patel & Overton 2002) • Evergreen forest flora of Malawi (White, Dowsett-Lemaire & Chapman 2001) We also consulted numerous papers dealing with specific families or genera and, finally, included the collections made during the SABONET Nyika Expedition. In addition, botanists from K and PRE provided valuable input in particular plant groups. Much of the descriptive material is taken directly from one or more of the works listed above, including information regarding habitat and distribution. A single illustration accompanies each genus; two illustrations are sometimes included in large genera with a wide morphological variance (for example, Lobelia). -

Triplinerviae includes four species native to western North America: S. altissima, S. elongata , S. gigantea, and S. lepida . All of these except S. gigantea have been included at one time or another within S. canadensis . While rather similar among themselves, each species is distinguished by different sets of indument, leaf, and inflorescence traits. A series of multivariate morphometric analyses were performed on 244 specimens to discover additional technical traits useful in separating the species and to elucidate problems with identification in a group of species complicated by multiple ploidy levels and considerable infraspecific variation. Statistical support for recognizing S. gigantea var. shinnersii and S. lepida var. salebrosa was generated in comparisons of the varieties with the typical variety in each species. Solidago subsect. Triplinerviae (Torrey & A. Gray) Nesom (Asteraceae: Astereae) includes 17 species native North and South America (Semple 2017 frequently updated). E-mail: Abstract: A systematic survey was carried out on wet grasslands found over Histosols at Upper Tibagi River basin, between Ponta Grossa and Palmeira municipalities, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, place of high importance because of soil water retention capability and soil carbon pool composition. We provide a checklist containing 146 species, 96 genera and 42 plant families for the area. Families with higher species richness were Asteraceae (27 species; 21 genera), Poaceae (24; 16) and Cyperaceae (18; 6). Four species were classified as endangered or rare, and one as exotic. The specific richness in wet grassland environments at the state of Paraná underlines the need for conservation efforts encompassing these formations. Abstract Despite the traditional use of Solidago canadensis L. (Asteraceae) as a diuretic drug, there is a scarcity in scientific data concerning the activity of its different extracts and fractions as well as the class of constituents responsible for this diuretic action. A comparative study was carried out for the diuretic activities of the different standardized extracts and fractions of the flowering aerial parts of S. canadensis, as well as isolation of compounds from the most biologically active fraction. The ethanol extract and its ethyl acetate fraction (EA) showed the highest aquaretic activities (91 and 58% at a dose of 400 mg/Kg b.wt., respectively) compared to 100% of furosemide at 20 mg/Kg b.wt.. Their activities were higher than Cystinol® and spironolactone reference standards (74% and 59% of furosemide, respectively). EA showed the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents among the tested fractions of the ethanol and aqueous extracts (9.38 ± 0.004 g GAE and 39.75 ± 0.005 g RE/100 g dried extract, respectively). -

Guinea is a major supplier of the world’s bauxite and has significant reserves of high grade iron ore, it also has small reserves of diamonds, gold and uranium. As a result large areas of open cast mining exist in the country and pressure on habitats and vegetation are increasing with the need to bring revenue into the country; this is in addition to unsustainable slash and burn agriculture and a growing population. An initial list of 482 species was compiled from Lisowski’s Flore (Angiospermes) de la République de Guinée, subsequent discussion and screening reduced the list to 253. This list has since increased, through new species and range extensions, to 270 which is presented here. It is estimated that c. 7-8% of the countries flora is threatened. Rediscoveries and new species are being made in Guinea, but they are often already threatened having been discovered as part of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). -
