Singh* ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim, India ICAR-IARI, Kalimpong, West Bengal, India *Corresponding author ABSTRACT Orchids are one of the highly commercial crops in floriculture sector and are robustly exploited due to the high ornamental and economic value. ICAR-NRC for Orchids Pakyong, Sikkim, India, majorly focused on collection, characterization, K e yw or ds evaluation, conservation and utilization of genetic resources available in the country particularly in north-eastern region and developed a National repository of Orchids, Collection, Conservation, orchids. From 1996 to till date, several exploration programmes carried across the Utilization country and a total of 351 species under 94 genera was collected and conserved at Article Info this institute. Leaves mostly simple and palmately lobed or at least palmately veined, in a few species pinnately veined and entire or toothed, or pinnately or palmately 3–5-foliolate. Inflorescence corymbiform or umbelliform, sometimes racemose or large paniculate. Sepals (4 or)5, rarely 6. Petals (4 or)5, rarely 6, seldom absent. Stamens (4 or 5 or)8(or 10 or 12); filaments distinct. Carpels 2; ovules (1 or)2 per locule. Fruit a winged schizocarp, commonly a double samara, usually 1-seeded; embryo oily or starchy, radicle elongate, cotyledons 2, green, flat or plicate; endosperm absent. 2n = 26. About 129 species: widespread in both temperate and tropical regions of N Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central and North America; 99 species (61 endemic, three introduced) in China. Acer lanceolatum Molliard (Bull. Soc. Bot. France 50: 134. 1903), described from Guangxi, is an uncertain species and is therefore not accepted here. The type specimen, in Berlin (B), has been destroyed. Up to now, no additional specimens have been found that could help clarify the application of this name. Worldwide, Japanese maples are famous for their autumn color, and there are over 400 cultivars. Also, many Chinese maple trees have beautiful autumn colors and have been cultivated widely in Chinese gardens, such as Acer buergerianum, A. davidii, A. duplicatoserratum, A. griseum, A. pictum, A. tataricum subsp. ginnala, A. triflorum, A. truncatum, and A. wilsonii. Taiwania, 48(3): 139-146, 2003 Orchidaceous Additions to the Floras of China and Vietnam Paul Ormerod(1) (Manuscript received 17 April, 2003; accepted 6 May, 2003) ABSTRACT: Literature and herbarium studies of Chinese and Vietnamese orchids have revealed a variety of new and noteworthy data pertinent to the floras of China and Vietnam. Three new combinations are proposed, viz, Bhutanthera humidicola, Odontochilus saprophyticus and Peristylus garrettii. Three new species are proposed, viz. Epigeneium mimicum, Podochilus banaensis and P. oxystophylloides. KEY WORDS: Orchidaceae, Additions, China, Vietnam. The present paper is mainly the result of herbarium and literature studies made at the Harvard University Herbaria (A, AMES, GH). Most of the Chinese materials examined were collected in the 1930’s, an era that was one of the high points of Sino-American botanical cooperation in the twentieth century. Vietnamese specimens on the other hand are poorly represented at Harvard and these mostly consist of duplicates made by French collectors, a small collection made by Chinese collectors in North Vietnam and an important set formed by Joseph and Mary Strong Clemens during their visit to South Vietnam in 1927. A revision of the genus Porandra D.Y. Hong in Thailand is presented. Three species are recognised, P. microphylla Y. Wan, P. ramosa D.Y. Hong and P. scandens D.Y. Hong. The first two species are newly recorded from Thailand. A key to the species is provided together with illustrations, distributions and ecological data. INTRODUCTION The genus Porandra was established by Hong (1974) based on two species, namely P. ramosa D.Y. Hong and P. scandens D.Y. Hong. Since his work a third species, P. microphylla Y. Wan has been described from China (Wan, 1986). Faden (1998) considered Porandra to be probably conspecific with Amischotolype but Hong & DeFilipps (2000) maintained the genus. All species except P. scandens were considered endemic to China. The genus was separated from Amischotolype by its climbing habit and anther cells opening by apical pores. In the course of preparing Commelinaceae treatments for the Flora of Thailand, P. ramosa and P. microphylla are newly recorded for the country. In addition, although Hong (1974) and Hong & DeFillips (2000) stated that rhizomes were absent, although we found long horizontal underground rhizomes in P. microphylla and P. scandens and they may also be present in P. ramosa. Epilist 1.0: a Global Checklist of Vascular Epiphytes

However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong. -
