“Outstanding design brings a smile to your face”: the verdict of the jury of the iF communication design award 2011

231 entries received the iF label for outstanding design in the field of communication. The best 30 of these, the iF gold awards, were an- nounced on 18 March 2011 at the awards ceremony at BMW World Mu- nich.

Innovative concepts and technical perfection: a total of 861 entries from 27 countries were submitted to the iF communication design award 2011. The jury selected 231 to receive the coveted iF label for outstanding design and the best 30 of these were honored with an iF gold award. “Once again, it was obvi- ous that to merit an award you always need both an excellent concept and per- fect technical implementation”, said the jury. The jurors also stated: “Across the entries, we could see different disciplines coming together behind one idea. This means that it’s no longer about the lonely developer or sitting in front of their computers: instead it needs active teamwork and good team communica- tion to achieve the joint goal of creating something outstanding. It’s good to see such a trend.”

Entries were evaluated in the categories 01. digital media, 02. product inter- faces, 03. print media, 04. crossmedia and 05. corporate . 03. print media

Category: print media corporate design Entry/Project: Deutscher Bundestag | Visual Identity Client/Company: Deutscher Bundestag, Berlin/GERMANY Design: Katrin Dittmann, Daniel Fels, Angela Klasar (Projektleitung), Tris- tan Schmitz (Projektleitung), Andreas Uebele, büro uebele visuelle kom- munikation, Stuttgart/GERMANY

“Due to its strong visual presence, the eagle, the symbol of federal Germany, can’t be too heavily modified: you have to approach the task with caution. This corporate design has achieved a successful – and respectful – reworking of the symbol. The addition of strong accent colors was a brave decision, but at the same time it doesn’t detract from this most ubiquitous of German symbols. This visual identity is implemented in a sophisticated manner, which really appealed to us. This outstanding piece of work really has earned our respect!”

Category: print media corporate design Entry/Project: nine o'clock brand | Corporate Identity Client/Company: nine o'clock cafe, Seoul/SOUTH KOREA Design: Kiyoung Jung, Yuri Ahn, Seoul/SOUTH KOREA

“The typography, the logo, the implementation of merchandising and packaging and the look of the café from the exterior are so simple, so pure that it makes you want to step inside and partake of this oasis of calm. The idea behind it is fascinatingly simple and it’s slickly implemented. Congratulations to this South- Korean iF gold award winner.”

Category: print media corporate design

Entry/Project: Staufenstiftung | Communication und design Client/Company: Stiftung zur Erhaltung der historischen Altstadt Staufen, Staufen i. Br./GERMANY Design: Joseph Pölzelbauer, Jean Mierecke, Marcel Ermes, Reinhard Groh, Simone Pölzelbauer, Burghard Müller-Dannhausen, identis GmbH, design- gruppe joseph pölzelbauer, Freiburg/GERMANY

“The winning idea behind this campaign and corporate design is a simplified, re- duced symbolism: The use of the rupture as a unifying element in all aspects of the design is so thorough, so lovingly thought through, down to the last detail, it’s pure joy to behold. Extremely innovative, consistent, thorough, even coura- geous: this branding is perfectly implemented, richly deserving of an iF gold award.”

Category: print media advertising media Entry/Project: Opel - Good tools. Good work. | Toolkit type Client/Company: Adam Opel GmbH, Rüsselsheim/GERMANY Design: Günter Sendlmeier (CEO), Jonathan Sven Amelung (Creative Direc- tor), Pedro Americo (Art Director), Julia Kiolbassa (Senior Account Man- ager), Christian Stoll (Photographer), Ralph Hillert (Postproduction), Fu- tureBrand GmbH, Hamburg/GERMANY

“Here, we’re looking at a campaign that really concentrates on its target group and strikes just the right note: a tradesman’s car is his most important ‘tool’, and the translation of this idea into pictures and words underlines this fact in a gen- tle, humorous way. Anyone looking at this would sense that Opel has great em- pathy for its clients, and can meet their needs. A lovely campaign, brilliantly done!”

Category: print media advertising media Entry/Project: Das Theater Erlangen | Posters Client/Company: Das Theater Erlangen, Erlangen/GERMANY Design: Anna Bühler, Pit Stenkhoff, Nina Odzinieks, Eva Wendel, Neue Ge- staltung GmbH, Berlin/GERMANY

“This series of theater posters is simply outstanding. It’s an unusual decision, not to use any photography, simply relying on the pure interplay of shadows that, along with handwritten text produces a striking impression. The choice of icons to represent each play is inspired, and shows that it’s about the stories: curious onlookers will be drawn in, but still have room for their own fantasies. Fantastic. Kudos!”

Category: print media corporate communication Entry/Project: Moormann Katalog Vol. 3 | Catalog Client/Company: Nils Holger Moormann GmbH, Aschau im Chiemgau/GERMANY Design: Jäger & Jäger, Überlingen/GERMANY

“Almost everyone is familiar with Nils Holger Moorman’s fantastic products, and this catalog is just like his products: never dull, extremely detailed and made for discoverers. The combination of photos and , and the integration of

technical information are superbly implemented. A calm, refined catalogue, yet one with great punch!”

Category: print media corporate communication Entry/Project: Open House | Event communication Client/Company: Comprinta AG, Zürich-Schwerzenbach/SWITZERLAND Design: Helm Pfohl, Lorenzo Geiger, Christina Zehnder, Eclat AG, Erlen- bach, Zurich/SWITZERLAND

“Pure and refined typography is consistently used to impart identity. This restraint shows the strength with which this event communication grabs the observer. The choice of colors and the precision of the typesetting are fantastic. You can really feel the love of design behind every single character: wow, easily the best exam- ple of pure typography in the whole competition!”

Category: print media corporate communication Entry/Project: Canyon Bicycles | Brandbook Client/Company: Canyon Bicycles GmbH, Koblenz/GERMANY Design: Knut Maierhofer (Managing Partner, Design), Patrick Märki (Team Manager, Design), Bettina Otto (Senior Designer), Daniel Perraudin (De- signer), Daniel Bittmann (Text), Simon Betsch (Client Manager), Manuela Liebertz (Project Manager), KMS TEAM, Munich/GERMANY

“Leafing through this catalog, you get a real feeling of dynamism, of intensity. On top of that, the images transport you into the biker scene, drawing the reader in completely. Every Canyon rider knows the advantages of their product, and this brandbook has as its starting point the experience, taking the user on a jour- ney, capturing their soul. Brilliantly implemented, it also captures the real ‘feel’ of the brand.”

Category: print media product communication Entry/Project: Zirkeltraining® | Catalog Client/Company: Bernd Dörr Recycling Goods, Mülheim/Ruhr/GERMANY Design: Markus Kreykenbohm (creation and brand management), Maria Brinkop (photography), Engelsbrigade®, Kreation und Neue Medien, Hannover/GERMANY

“You would be hard-pressed to find a more consistent implementation of a product catalog: the associations that leap out at you as you leaf through its pages are brought about by the choice of paper, the look-and-feel of the pic- tures, the images of athletes dressed in sports kit from the 1960s and 70s, the typography, the feel and the sheer attention to detail. Really authentic: it’s hard to imagine a more charming, retro appeal. Kudos!”

Category: print media publishing Entry/Project: fahrstil | Magazine Client/Company: velonauten UG, Göttingen/GERMANY

Design: Sven Marten, Janna Marten, Danijela Marin, Katharina Haaf, Sofia Bertolini, Rina Roki, Sarah Nickel, echtweiß | Corporate Design, Heidel- berg/GERMANY

“With this magazine, you instantly get a feeling of the marriage between form and content and of the passion for bike riding: it leaps off practically every page. You have to give respect to the choice of appropriate, yet unusual, themes be- cause it’s been absolutely authentically implemented. The photos and the typog- raphy are fantastic, and even though it’s for a niche product it’s been imple- mented with extraordinary professionalism and knowledge.”

04. crossmedia

Category: crossmedia advertising | campaigns Entry/Project: Axor Bouroullec | Introductory campaign Client/Company: Axor - Hansgrohe AG, Schiltach/GERMANY Design: bilekjaeger (design and realization), Stuttgart/GERMANY | Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (photo and video conception), Paris/FRANCE

“This entry works on so many levels. This is an innovative, flexible bath concept, where each user can kit out and adapt their bath to their individual needs. This crossmedial campaign really impresses with the way it communicates this concept to the target groups: bathroom installers, planners and users. The bringing to- gether of print media and the Internet is coherent, almost playful. Using a har- monious combination of various media, the planning process has been imple- mented in an extremely user-friendly .“

Category: crossmedia advertising | campaigns Entry/Project: Munken Cube | Communicative design object Client/Company: Arctic Paper, Hamburg/GERMANY Design: Wolfgang Greter, Björn Lux, JUNO, Hamburg/GERMANY

“This interdisciplinary cooperation between a furniture manufacturer and a paper producer is particularly striking. The shape of this object offers various possibilities of use. Users can design and shape it themselves, they can interact with the pa- per. The intermedial nature, the interplay between concrete form and the awak- ening of interest and attention has been wonderfully carried out. Especially, the Internet presence was perfectly aligned and a great addition to the product launch. The same is true for the information on events at which the Munken Cu- be can be used and shaped. A fantastic idea that reaches out to people’s creativi- ty.“

05. corporate architecture

Category: corporate architecture exhibition | trade fair Entry/Project: ‘balancity’ – German Pavilion EXPO 2010 | German Pavilion, EXPO Shanghai Client/Company: Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, repre- sented by Köln Messe International GmbH, Cologne/GERMANY

Design: Schmidhuber + Partner (architecture), Munich/GERMANY | Milla & Partner GmbH (exhibition and media), Stuttgart/GERMANY | Nüssli (Ger- many) GmbH (realization and project management), Roth/GERMANY

“The theme of ‘balance’ is perfectly represented in the architecture of this pavil- ion. Everything is an interplay, the sum of its parts. Each part of the city, of socie- ty must always remain in balance with all the other parts. The German pavilion is a wonderful example of how to communicate this important concept. Not only externally, but also internally, this pavilion seems always to be striving for bal- ance. More than worthy of a iF gold award!”

Category: corporate architecture exhibition | trade fair Entry/Project: Philips L+B 2010 | Exhibition design Client/Company: Philips GmbH UB Lighting, JM Eindhoven/NETHERLANDS Design: D'ART DESIGN GRUPPE GMBH, Neuss/GERMANY

“It’s very brave of a lighting manufacturer to limit themselves to showing how their products work – and not the products themselves. In particular getting across the feeling of how light makes us feel – warmth, climate – is brilliantly communicated by this light wall. Light, in all its many and varied facets such as color, wellbeing, absorption, mood and music forms a unified whole. It could hardly be bettered!”

Category: corporate architecture exhibition | trade fair Entry/Project: Roca "The Wave" | Exhibition stand, 100% Design London Client/Company: Roca Sanitario, S.A., Barcelona/SPAIN Design: Christopher Bauder, Christian Perstl, Michel David, Armin Purkrabek Christian Guder, WHITEvoid interactive art & design, Ber- lin/GERMANY

“Exceptional and innovative: a bathroom company not showing any products, but instead using product philosophy by representing and interpreting porcelain and water with digital and light technologies. In the smallest of spaces, an impos- ing presence was created outlining the interplay of humans and water. A groundbreaking example for future exhibition stand design, and so worthy of an iF gold award!”

Category: corporate architecture events Entry/Project: Tiffany & Co. Campaign | Global Brand Campaign Client/Company: Tiffany & Co., New York/USA Design: d'strict, New York/USA

“The sculptural implementation and appearance of this façade projection are striking. The projection produces a spatial, sculptural effect. The facade opens up, producing a dynamic simply by using a projection onto its surface. This engenders a huge suggestive power that is extremely attractive.”

Category: corporate interactive installations Entry/Project: tim I State Textile and Industrial Museum | Accessible pat- tern-book archive

Client/Company: Stadt Augsburg, Augsburg/GERMANY Design: ATELIER BRÜCKNER GmbH (conception, scenography), Stuttgart/GERMANY | Anja Luithle Objekte (figurines), Wendlingen a. N./GERMANY | Tamschick Media+Space GmbH (medial presentation), Ber- lin/GERMANY

“The great thing about this project is that they’ve succeeded in taking a historical theme like textile samples and presenting it using new media to bring it to life and make it really interesting and exciting. In this walk-in pattern-book archive you meet historical elements, but they’re newly interpreted, with larger-than- lifesize dolls that make the antique materials accessible in a three-dimensional manner, both in the tactile and visual sense. It’s a whole new dimension and es- thetic. This digital pattern-book interface brings the samples to life in a way that the original material never could. A living experience that turns the visitor into a designer, a fantastic feat for a textile museum.”

Category: corporate architecture communication media in architecture and public spaces Entry/Project: Mobility | Kinetic mirror installation Client/Company: Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH, Duderstadt/GERMANY Design: Joachim Sauter, Susanne Traeger, Simon Häcker, Hermann Klöck- ner, David Siegel, ART+COM, Berlin/GERMANY | ART+COM AG, Ber- lin/GERMANY

“How do you deal with people with disabilities? It’s interesting to see how this installation almost playfully documents the fact that these days having a disability is no longer seen as a great drawback. An equivalent is offered that adds creativi- ty and quality to life, thus making everyday life easier. Every one of us has a disa- bility, and this kinetic installation makes us aware of the fact. Additionally, its lay- out makes it a striking installation.“

Category: corporate architecture communication media in architecture and public spaces Entry/Project: The Treasure | Saudi Arabian Pavilion, Expo 2010 Client/Company: Saudi Expo 2010 Commission, MOMRA, Riyadh/SAUDI ARABIA Design: GPD General de Producciones y Diseño, Seville/SPAIN | Tamschick Media+Space GmbH, Berlin/GERMANY

“A moving walkway conveys the visitors, as if they’re flying over a panorama. An exceptional dimension is created through the process of gliding over the projec- tion surface and building structure. The panorama creates a sort of kaleidoscope, an immersive world. Space, graphics and film melt into each other to such an ex- tent that they create the epitome of spatial communication – the one can’t exist without the other. A perfect implementation of the idea!”

Category: corporate architecture interactive installations Entry/Project: Licht am Ende des Tunnels | Contribution to Luminale 2010 Client/Company: Schauspiel Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main/GERMANY | Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt am Main/GERMANY | Atelier Markgraph, Frankfurt am Main/GERMANY

Design: Atelier Markgraph, Frankfurt am Main/GERMANY | In cooperation with Meso Digital, Interiors, Ströer und HELI, Frankfurt am Main/GERMANY | Martin Professional (sponsor lighting and media tech- nology), Karlsfeld/GERMANY

“This entry aims to restore the theater to its former glory, making it accessible to a wider public. A fantastic interactive concept where a subway station is turned into a stage and where the passengers are the actors, the protagonists. A great way of rousing the theater from its slumber, making it interesting for a younger generation.”
