The current usage AND AIM of what constitutes "regional" is also not clear. Consumer expectations range from the individual municipality to the district and federal state to, occasionally, The origin of foods is highly relevant for increasing the whole of Germany. According to a representative numbers of consumers. According to their own account, survey across Germany7 by Stiftung Warentest in July at least half of all consumers deliberately pay attention and August 2012, almost 27 per cent of all respondents to the regional origin of products and this trend is in- considered a region to be a delimited natural region, creasing.1 A study of trends undertaken by the Federal such as the Allgäu, the Spreewald or the Rhone. For Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) confirmed that 28 per cent, the district is the region, for just under a regionality is the most important decision criterion in quarter (23 per cent) it is the federal state. Only six per food purchasing and, according to the study, even comes cent said it was the whole of Germany. The remaining ahead of price.2 respondents selected other definitions, such as the area directly around where they live, or several federal states, for example southern or northern Germany. Main motive for making a regional purchase: From the customer's viewpoint, the term "regionality" needs to be authenticated and is also highly emotionally BMEL study: taste, freshness, greater trust in charged. The communication-related presentation regional agriculture, shorter transport routes, through advertising message and packaging can influ- security of jobs through regional value chains 3 ence the perception of the topic at purchase8. The existing fuzziness of the term "region" thus enables an emotional Stiftung Warentest: to strengthen regional charge to be added by the use of words such as "home- agriculture and thus assume responsibility for land", "from here", "good food", etc. the surrounding region 4 Therefore, this also harbours the risk that typical green- washing strategies in the advertising and labelling of The topic of regionality is apparently a long-term mega- "regional products" come into play, for example, deliber- trend, as purchasing decisions are increasingly influenced ately using "regional" as a term that has not been clearly by sustainability criteria. 61 per cent of consumers defined without further explanation. believe that they will still be concerned about this topic Place descriptions on foods are not advertising terms for over the next ten years.5 The preference for regionality consumers in some cases, but are interpreted as clear re- is stronger in certain foodstuffs, mainly when it involves gional recipes and product identities. In the recent publication of a consumer magazine on regional foods in the retail trade – with and without a regional window – the topic was examined Typical greenwashing strategies:9 with the very critical title of "Regional? Alien!". According to Öko Test, only 26 out of 106 tested products (25 per Lack of proof: Claims are made that cannot be cent) actually came from the region.13 It also focused on verified through independent sources or proved the theme of the "taste of the homeland" in September through convincing studies. 2015 and described the food retail trade's regional seal as "nicely non-binding".14 Vague claims: Use of terms that are not clearly defined and that could be easily misunderstood. Incorrect labels: Use of dubious institutes or self-invented labels that have no practical value. Irrelevant claims: Making claims that are true but have no value. Untruths: Sending factually inappropriate advertis- ing messages. According to a representative study11, consumers would buy more regional products if they were cheaper. On the other hand, according to this study, many are also quite prepared to pay higher prices, e.g. for meat or eggs. Almost half of consumers would also buy more regional products if they were better informed about origin. Food manufacturers and retailers use this trend and advertise in a wide range of ways using claims about regional origin and quality. For 96 per cent of German retailers, the topic of "regionality" is of central importance. It ranks as the second most important topic behind the topic of "price pressure". Regional brands like "Unsere Heimat – real & good", "von Hier" or "Rewe Regional" are increasing in importance.

The Official Magazine of the DMK Group March 2019 Next-Generation Nourishment Birth of a New Era: After Three Years, a Multi- Million-Euro Plan to Make Baby Food is Going Live in Strückhausen Read us EDITORIAL when and We Are ALL DMK! where Oliver Bartelt you want! Global Head of Corporate Communications Dear Readers, The world keeps turning, and we turn with it, day after day. That said, our world is going through a period of deep uncertainty at the moment. For many companies, restructuring, reinvention and disruption are no longer exceptions. They are the “new normal.’’ Globalization, digitalization and demographic change – companies are increasingly confronting new challenges to their survival. Firms are under pressure to come up with answers, and come up with them quickly. And when companies seek answers, their employees are the ones who must find them. In the end, people make the difference. And that brings me to you -- the people who make up Germany’s largest dairy cooperative: the farmers, employees and leaders of DMK. That’s us! Resourcefulness, creativity and courage are in demand, and not just for creating new products. New products are ubiquitous nowadays – if that’s all you offer, you can easily be replaced. We are talking about more fundamental questions: How do we want to work together in the future? How do we want to lead? How do we want to evolve the nature of our work to leverage our full potential as a team? The critical question is not about the “what,’’ but the “how.’’ To accomplish this, we need a common identity and a common set of values to guide us as the world and our business continues to change.

23.12.2014 EN Official Journal of the European Union L 367/115 COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING DECISION of 19 December 2014 concerning certain protective measures in relation to highly pathogenic avian influenza of subtype H5N8 in Germany (notified under document C(2014) 10261) (Only the German text is authentic) (Text with EEA relevance) (2014/945/EU) THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, Having regard to Council Directive 89/662/EEC of 11 December 1989 concerning veterinary checks in intra-Community trade with a view to the completion of the internal market (1), and in particular Article 9(4) thereof, Having regard to Council Directive 90/425/EEC of 26 June 1990 concerning veterinary and zootechnical checks applic able in intra-Community trade in certain live animals and products with a view to the completion of the internal market (2), and in particular Article 10(4) thereof, Whereas: (1) Avian influenza is an infectious viral disease in birds, including poultry. Infections with avian influenza viruses in domestic poultry cause two main forms of that disease that are distinguished by their virulence. The low patho genic form generally only causes mild symptoms, while the highly pathogenic form results in very high mortality rates in most poultry species. That disease may have a severe impact on the profitability of poultry farming. (2) Avian influenza is mainly found in birds, but under certain circumstances infections can also occur in humans even though the risk is generally very low. (3) In the event of an outbreak of avian influenza, there is a risk that the disease agent might spread to other hold ings where poultry or other captive birds are kept.
