Han sido tiempos duros, con altibajos, pensando en él cada día y echándole de menos cada segundo. Le echo en falta, pero me reconforta pensar que todavía hoy sus compañeros de trabajo, alumnos y amigos le recuerdan y le homenajean. Señal de que fue una persona querida y respetada en todos los ámbitos. Su carrera como historiador y docente fue brillante; múltiples homenajes y el reconocimiento de todo su entorno académico lo acreditan como un profe- sional aplicado, laborioso y cabal. Pero eso ya lo sabemos todos. Así era y así lo recuerdo, trabajando en vacaciones, festivos, y en largas noches de insom- nio en las que no se despegaba de libros, apuntes o exámenes. Mi padre amaba su profesión y cumplir con sus obligaciones era lo pri- mero, aunque le robara tiempo familiar o le costara salud. Era un trabajador incansable, diligente y humilde, y perseguía sus metas con afán y entusiasmo, sabiendo que la investigación y la docencia son campos donde las recompen- sas suelen ser arbitrarias y caprichosas. Y siempre restaba importancia a sus éxitos cuando era interrogado, síntoma de que era una persona reservada e inconformista, que nunca se movía por intereses económicos o vanidades, siempre comprometido con sus labores, a viento y marea, con sacrificios perso- nales y desgaste vital. De todo esto me siento orgullosa, y su ejemplo me motiva para disfrutar de mi trabajo y para levantarme cada día con sus valores como referentes para afrontar cada jornada laboral. Su integridad le sirvió para prosperar, pero sus ambiciones siempre fueron la investigación y sus alumnos, y no el reconoci- miento o la reputación. Sin embargo, a lo largo de estos meses me ha animado ver que son mu- chos los compañeros y amigos que le siguen recordando en diferentes medios, indicio de que fue una persona querida y apreciada por sus colegas de profe- sión, no solo por su carrera, si no también por su forma de ser y su calidez humana. Es de esto de lo que más orgullosa me siento. Revista de Estudios Extremeños, 2015, Tomo LXXI, N.º III I.S.S.N.: 0210-2854 1534 ANA SERRANO CUENDA Mi padre tenía un gran sentido del humor. Quizás sea lo primero que se me viene a la cabeza cuando pienso en él. Era socarrón, tenía ingenio y era mordaz y cáustico cuando quería provocar de manera traviesa e inteligente la sonrisa de sus interlocutores. Era una persona lúcida y despierta, que sabía que es mejor no hablar si no vas a mejorar el silencio. Pero de lo que más me gusta presumir es lo buen profesor que era. Y no me refiero a sus dotes como maestro o su conocimiento, si no a sus maneras y su compromiso personal. Me consta que se esforzaba mucho con los que más dificultades tenían, con los que lo tenían más complicado, con los que se suelen quedar rezagados. Y que les transmitía su pasión por aprender y por la materia que estuviera impartiendo. Que se involucraba y se mojaba sabiendo que muchas veces -pese a sus esfuerzos- la enseñanza no premia al docente con estudiantes comprometidos. Sin embargo así era, quizás algo ingenuo con la sensibilidad y la bondad de las personas, ya que en él solo había generosidad y compromiso sin pedir nada a cambio. Tan solo la entrega honrada y entusiasta con la que él vivía. Por último, quiero agradecer a los compañeros y amigos que participan en este número, por el cariño que

Droughts are probably the natural hazard with the highest socioeconomic impact. Simultaneously, they are a very complex phenomenon; they are triggered by a diversity of physical factors and occur at a variety of time scales. Consequently, the instrumental record currently available is too short and the characterization of its multidecadal variability requires the use of natural proxies (tree rings, sedimentary records) or documentary sources. In this paper we analyse three documentary sources with potential to analyse the long-term variability of droughts: chapter acts, logbooks and chronicles. The chapter acts recorded discussions and decisions made during the assemblies of the local authorities and provide continuous and direct evidence on drought impacts. They are especially useful to study droughts between the 15th and the 19th centuries in Europe and the 17th to 18th in the former colonies. Logbooks recorded the meteorological conditions and the incidents occurred during navigation. They provide indirect information through the circulation indices that can be very helpful to understand the mechanisms and teleconnections associated to droughts. Finally, the chronicles are historiographical documents describing political and social events. They are secondary sources and the references to climatic events are discontinuous, thus their analysis must be extremely careful, but they are especially useful to study specific drought events especially prior to 15th century when no other sources are available.

INTRODUCTION 20°W Hurricane Vince was one of the many extraordinary hurricanes that formed in the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. Unlike Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, Vince was remarkable not because of intensity, nor the destruction it inflicted, but because of its defiance to our current understandings of hurricane formation. Vince formed in early October of 2005 in the far North Atlantic Ocean and acquired characteristics of a hurricane southeast of the Azores, an area previously unknown to hurricane formation. Figure 1 shows a visible image taken at 14:10 UTC on 9 October 2005 when Vince was near its peak intensity. There is little doubt that a hurricane with an eye surrounded by convection is located near 34°N, 19°W. A buoy located under the northern eyewall of the hurricane indicated a sea-surface temperature (SST) of 22.9°C, far below what is considered to be the 30°N minimum value of 26°C for hurricane formation (see insert of Fig. 3f). STEWART Tropical Prediction Center, NOAA/NWS/National Hurricane Center, Miami, Florida (Manuscript received 2 November 2006, in final form 30 April 2007) ABSTRACT The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active of record. Twenty-eight storms occurred, includ- ing 27 tropical storms and one subtropical storm. Fifteen of the storms became hurricanes, and seven of these became major hurricanes. Additionally, there were two tropical depressions and one subtropical depression. Numerous records for single-season activity were set, including most storms, most hurricanes, and highest accumulated cyclone energy index. Five hurricanes and two tropical storms made landfall in the United States, including four major hurricanes. Eight other cyclones made landfall elsewhere in the basin, and five systems that did not make landfall nonetheless impacted land areas. The 2005 storms directly caused nearly 1700 deaths. This includes approximately 1500 in the United States from Hurricane Katrina— the deadliest U.S. hurricane since 1928. The storms also caused well over $100 billion in damages in the United States alone, making 2005 the costliest hurricane season of record. 1. This case study illuminates marginal limestone deposits on a steep volcanic flank and their recurring interruption by deposits linked to volcaniclastic processes. Historically known as Ilhéu da Cal (Lime Island), Ilhéu de Baixo was separated from Porto Santo, in the Madeira Archipelago, during the course of the Quaternary. Here, extensive mines were tunnelled in the Miocene carbonate strata for the production of slaked lime. Approximately 10 000 m3 of calcarenite (À1 to 1ø) was removed by hand labour from the Blandy Brothers mine at the south end of the islet. Investigations of two stratigraphic sections at opposite ends of the mine reveal that the quarried material represents an incipient carbonate ramp developed from east to west and embanked against the flank of a volcanic island. A petrographic analysis of limestones from the mine shows that coralline red algae from crushed rhodoliths account for 51% of all identifiable bioclasts. This material was transported shoreward and deposited on the ramp between normal wave base and storm wave base at moderate depths.

This chapter seeks to identify and analyse the impact of the tail-end of hurricanes on the weather of Western Europe since 1960. The chapter will explore the characteristics and pathways of the hurricanes that have affected Western Europe and will also examine the weather conditions they have produced and give some assessment of their impact. In this context 23 events have been identified of which 21 originated as hurricanes and two as tropical storms (NOAA, 2010). Rohli and Jennifer Collins Additional information is available at the end of the chapter Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/64061 Abstract Large‐scale atmospheric and oceanic conditions in the western Atlantic basin were analyzed to understand the unique tropical cyclogenesis (TCG) and intensification mechanism of Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the most intense Atlantic basin tropical cyclone (TC) on record. An analysis of 850 hPa circulations depicted in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data suggests that anomalous development of the 850 hPa circulation pattern triggered by Hurricane Vince (October 8–11, 2005) contributed to the development of a large‐scale low‐level vortex that preceded Wilma's TCG in the eastern Caribbean. In particular, weakened easterly winds in the central tropical Atlantic assisted the unique large‐scale cyclonic circulation over the western Atlantic about a week before Wilma's TCG. The unprecedented rapid intensification of Wilma was investigated considering the interactions between mid‐latitude troughs and large‐ scale low‐level circulations as well as anomalously warm SST conditions. The global Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model run for Hurricane Wilma suggests that the role of mid‐latitude systems in TC activity is more important than previously believed and that every in situ large‐ or meso‐scale vortex and circulation component at least in the immediately neighboring region of TCG seems to have a significant influence on TCG processes.
