AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Helen Patricia O'Donahue Pembrook for the Master of Arts (Name) (Degree) Systematic Botany (Major) Date thesis is presented March 8, 1963 Title AN ILLUSTRATED KEY TO THE FERNS OF OREGON Abstract approved IIIII (Major professor) The purpose of the work is to enable students of botany to identify accurately Oregon ferns, both as living plants and as dried speci- mens. Therefore, it provides vegetative keys to the families, genera and species of the ferns (Class FILICINAE) found in Oregon. Correct names have been determined using the latest available information and in accordance with 1961 edition of the International Code of Botan- ical Nomenclature. The synonomy, a description, and original draw- ings of each species and subspecific taxon are included. An illustrated glossary and a technical glossary have been prepared to explain and clarify the descriptive terms used. There is also a bibliography of the literature used in the preparation of the paper. The class FILICINAE is represented in Oregon by 4 families, 20 genera, 45 or 46 species, 4 of which are represented by more than one subspecies or variety. One species, Botrychium pumicola Coville, is endemic. The taxa are distributed as follows: OPHIO- GLOSSACEAE, 2 genera: Botrychium, 7 species, 1 represented by 2 subspecies, 1 by 2 varieties; Ophioglossum, 1 species. POLYPODI- ACEAE, 15 genera: Woodsia., 2 species; Cystopteris, 1 species; Dryopteris, 6 species; Polystichum, 5 species, 1 represented by 2 distinct varieties; Athyrium, 2 species; Asplenium, 2 species; Stru- thiopteris, 1 species; Woodwardia, 1 species; Pitrogramma, 1 spe- cies; Pellaea, 4 species; Cheilanthes, 3 or 4 species; Cryptogramma, 1 species; Adiantum, 2 species; Pteridium, 1 species; Polypodium, 2 species, 1 represented by 2 varieties. -

Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. A List of the Ferns of Mahoning County with Special Reference to Mill Creek Park
86 The Ohio Naturalist. [Vol. X, No. 4, A LIST OF THE FERNS OF MAHONING COUNTY WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO MILL CREEK PARK. EARNEST W. VICKERS. Lying toward the north-eastern corner of the state and belonging to a group known as the Highland Counties of Ohio, Mahoning presents variations of soil and surface which find natural expression in its flora. The erosions of the Mahoning River which flows up the west side of the County and again down across the north-east corner, as well as numerous smaller streams have left steep banks, glens, ledges and cliffs and in the case of Mill Creek—which gives the park its name—at Lautermain Falls, near Youngstown, a gorge has been cut seventy-three feet in depth. It is in these places that the rock loving ferns find congenial habitat. There are rich wet woods—remnants of noble forests— where the sylvan groups are well represented; while swamps of greater or less area are scattered over the county where ferns of the marsh or bog flourish. In its remarkably varied character in such small compass, Mill Creek Park represents the whole county so faithfully that the botanist may expect, and without disappointment, to find therein almost a complete living index to the fern flora of Mahoning County. The ferns listed below have been verified by Prof. J. H. Schaffner and are represented by specimens deposited in the State Herbarium at Columbus, Ohio. Polypodium vulgare L. Common Polypody. Commonest on rocks and ledges, its natural home, but also found on stumps and logs. -

Rothfels, [email protected] Abstract We present a family-level classification for the eupolypod II clade of leptosporangiate ferns, one of the two major lineages within the Eupolypods, and one of the few parts of the fern tree of life where family-level relationships were not well understood at the time of publication of the 2006 fern classification by Smith & al. Comprising over 2500 species, the composition and particularly the relationships among the major clades of this group have historically been contentious and defied phylogenetic resolution until very recently. Our classification reflects the most current available data, largely derived from published molecular phylogenetic studies. -
New and Noteworthy Additions to the Arkansas Fern Flora

University Ave. Little Rock, AR 72204 [email protected] ABSTRACT Since 1995, 11 fern taxa have been added to the Arkansas flora as new and native, including Asplenium montanum , A. ruta-muraria , A. septentrianale , A. ×trudellii , Athyrium angustum , Azolla caroliniana , Dryopteris goldiana , D. celsa × goldiana , Marsilea macropoda , Palhinhaea cernua , and Trichomanes intracatum . Of the reported Arkansas native ferns, one was deleted (Azolla caroliniana ), being subsumed by Azolla mexicana and now correctly known as Azolla microphylla . Since 1995, 20 fern taxa have been added to the Arkansas fern flora as new and naturalized, including Arachnioides simplicior , Athyrium nipponicum ‘Pictum’, Cyrtomium falcatum , C. fortunei , Dryopteris erythrospora , Hypolepis tenuifolia , Marsilea mutica , M. quadrifolia , Matteuccia struthiopteris , Nephrolepis exaltata , Polystichum tsus-sinense , Phegopteris decursive-pinnata , Salvinia minima , S. molesta , Selaginella braunii , S. kraussiana , S. k. ‘Aurea’, S. k. ‘Brownii’, S. k. ‘Goldtips’, and S. uncinata . Of the reported Arkansas naturalized ferns, one was deleted (C. fortunei ), being without a known voucher. There are now 97 native and 24 naturalized fern taxa known and documented in the Arkansas fern flora. The total Arkansas fern flora is now 121 taxa documented with 3019 county-level occurrence records. Noteworthy update records and comments are reported for 79 of 97 Arkansas native species and 25 Arkansas naturalized species. Phytochrome Diversity in Green Plants and the Origin of Canonical Plant Phytochromes

Pryer1 & Sarah Mathews10,w Phytochromes are red/far-red photoreceptors that play essential roles in diverse plant morphogenetic and physiological responses to light. Despite their functional significance, phytochrome diversity and evolution across photosynthetic eukaryotes remain poorly understood. Using newly available transcriptomic and genomic data we show that canonical plant phytochromes originated in a common ancestor of streptophytes (charophyte algae and land plants). Phytochromes in charophyte algae are structurally diverse, including canonical and non-canonical forms, whereas in land plants, phytochrome structure is highly conserved. Liverworts, hornworts and Selaginella apparently possess a single phytochrome, whereas independent gene duplications occurred within mosses, lycopods, ferns and seed plants, leading to diverse phytochrome families in these clades. Surprisingly, the phytochrome portions of algal and land plant neochromes, a chimera of phytochrome and phototropin, appear to share a common origin. Cheilanthes (Cheilanthoideae, Pteridaceae), with Emphasis on South American Species

Amalia Scataglini1 Received: 20 July 2017 /Accepted: 22 April 2018 /Published online: 5 May 2018 # Gesellschaft für Biologische Systematik 2018 Abstract Cheilanthoid ferns (Cheilanthoideae sensu PPG 1 2016) constitute an important group within the Pteridaceae and are cosmopolitan in distribution. In South America, there are 155 species distributed in 13 genera, among which the largest are Adiantopsis (35), Cheilanthes (27), and Doryopteris (22). Most of the cheilanthoid species are morphologically adapted to grow in arid to semi-arid conditions and show convergent evolution, which has implied difficulties in defining the genera throughout their taxonomic history (Copeland 1947,Tryon&Tryon1973,Gastony&Rollo 1995, 1998,KirkpatrickSystematic Botany, 32:504–518, 2007, Rothfels et al. Taxon, 57: 712–724, 2008). Here, we sequenced two plastid markers (rbcL + trnL-F) of 33 South American cheilanthoid species, most of which have not been included in phylogenetic analyses previously. The South American species were analyzed together with South African and Australasian Cheilanthes and representatives of related cheilanthoid genera. The phylogenetic analysis showed that most Cheilanthes species are related to the genus Hemionitis, constituting different groups according to their distribu- tion; moreover, three species—C. hassleri, C. pantanalensis,andC. obducta—appear as the sister clade of Hemionitis. Cheilanthes micropteris, the type species, is strongly supported in a clade with Australasian Cheilanthes plus five South American Cheilanthes species, all of which show a reduction in the number of spores per sporangium; this feature would be a synapomorphy for core Cheilanthes s.s.
