This dissertation consists of three separate chapters: Blackbrush (Coleogyne ramosissima) natural regeneration in the Great Basin-Mojave Desert Transition Zone on two fires, Long-term Response to Fire in Eastern Mojave Desert semi-arid shrubland communities, and an Annotated Checklist of Gold Butte National Monument in the Mojave-Colorado Plateau Transition Zone. The section on blackbrush natural regeneration was a long-term dataset from two fires in Basin and Range National Monument that burned in 2008 with monitoring events in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2019. The monitoring documented some of the strongest post-fire regeneration for the paleoendemic Coleogyne. It established as seedlings the first year following fire and grew to dominate the burned area over the next decade, reaching 11% total cover. The fire chronosequence included permanent plots on 31 burned areas across the Eastern Mojave Desert that burned from 1980- 2006 and were previously monitored from 2007—2009, and then remonitored in 2016. It documents long-term change in creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) and Coleogyne shrubland communities. An Annotated Checklist of Gold Butte National Monument is a landscape scale description of the vegetation communities and diversity at one of the country’s newest national monuments. It verified 676 vouchered vascular plant taxa from 84 families that occurred within the monument’s boundaries, including Nevada state records for Cutler’s jointfir (Ephedra cutleri) and Utah knotweed (Polygonum utahense). These three chapters relate to the description of Mojave Desert plant communities and their successional responses following disturbance. The often slow response of desert plant communities and long-lived shrubs makes them difficult to monitor. The strength of the data come from study designs with substantial replication of disturbance events within the area and repeated long-term permanent plots which are able to iii describe vegetation change occurring over decades. Although crystal distribution is likely a systematic feature of some species of Buddleja, other wood features relate closely to ecology. Features correlated with xeromorphy in Buddleja include strongly marked growth rings (terminating with vascular tracheids), narrower mean vessel diameter, shorter vessel elements, greater vessel density, and helical thickenings in vessels. Old World species of Buddleja cannot be differentiated from New World species on the basis of wood features. Emorya wood is like that of xeromorphic species of Buddleja. Lateral wall vessel pits of Nuxia are small (2.5 ILm) compared to those of Buddleja (mostly 5-7 ILm) . Peltanthera wood features can also be found in Buddleja or Nuxia; Dickison's transfer of Sanango from Buddlejaceae to Ges­ neriaceae is justified. All wood features of Buddlejaceae can be found in families of subclass Asteridae such as Acanthaceae, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Myoporaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Verbenaceae.

    Welcome to the 32nd Annual Wild Flower Hotline, brought to you by the Theodore Payne Foundation, a non-profit plant nursery, seed source, book store, and education center dedicated to the preservation of wild flowers and California native plants. This a report for March 21, 2014. New reports will be posted each Friday through the end of May. The Mojave Desert is still the place to be this week, although I will include a few more good sights as many of you are starting Spring Break and may want to explore other areas as well. Let’s start with our first report from the Southern Sierra near Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. The park region has had a dry season. Blooming appears to be early and short, but along Hwy 198 near Sequoia National Park look for Western redbud (Cercis occidentalis) in full bloom now. There have been spotty sightings of silver bush lupine (Lupinus albifrons) as well. There are bright orange patches of fiddleneck (Amsinckia menziesii) and the California poppies (Eschscholzia californica) are just starting to appear. Further north at Yosemite/Hetch Hetchy, flowers are starting to bloom, but it is still early in the season. Because of the Rim Fire last year, the only trail available is the one from the dam to Wapama and Rancheria Falls. (The trail to Poopenaut Valley is closed.) In the moist areas look for red maids (Calandrinia ciliata), and a few harlequin lupines (Lupinus stiversii), which are just getting started. Some of the larger pools of flowing water still contain Sierra newts (Taricha sierrae).

    Lake Havasu City Recommended Landscaping Plant List Lake Havasu City Recommended Landscaping Plant List Disclaimer Lake Havasu City has revised the recommended landscaping plant list. This new list consists of plants that can be adapted to desert environments in the Southwestern United States. This list only contains water conscious species classified as having very low, low, and low-medium water use requirements. Species that are classified as having medium or higher water use requirements were not permitted on this list. Such water use classification is determined by the type of plant, its average size, and its water requirements compared to other plants. For example, a large tree may be classified as having low water use requirements if it requires a low amount of water compared to most other large trees. This list is not intended to restrict what plants residents choose to plant in their yards, and this list may include plant species that may not survive or prosper in certain desert microclimates such as those with lower elevations or higher temperatures. In addition, this list is not intended to be a list of the only plants allowed in the region, nor is it intended to be an exhaustive list of all desert-appropriate plants capable of surviving in the region. This list was created with the intention to help residents, businesses, and landscapers make informed decisions on which plants to landscape that are water conscious and appropriate for specific environmental conditions. Lake Havasu City does not require the use of any or all plants found on this list. List Characteristics This list is divided between trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines, succulents and perennials.
