Sw. or ‘Dheki Shak’ is used as a nutritive leafy vegetable by the local communities of Terai and Duars parts of West Bengal. From our study and previous literatures it was found of having very important ethnobotanical value. The people of lower socio-economic communities rely mainly upon the collection and selling of this plant during the summer and monsoon season in the study area. The step wise photographs from field to market are represented here along with the ethnobotanical uses by different communities across India. Sw. (Family: Athyriaceae) is one of the very popular edible ferns, a common pteridophytes usually included in one of the major ingredients in the traditional 'Ulam' (salads) preparations in Malaysia. The plant is highly valued for its several medicinal attributes. The present paper reports the physicochemical studies of the aerial parts. Diagnostic characteristics of the aerial parts powder showed presence of lignified xylem fibres and non-lignified phloem fibres, fragments of epidermal cells containing anomocytic stomata, mesophyll, palisade cells, parenchyma and collenchyma tissues, covering trichomes and prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate. Preliminary phytochemical screening of different extracts showed presence of steroids, triterpenoids, tannins and phenolic substances, flavonoids, carbohydrates, gum and mucilage. The findings of -

LEVY r Reprinted from RHODORA, Vol. 79, No. 818, April 1977 pages 240-268 - A CONTRIBUTION TOW ARDS A VASCULAR FLORA OF THE GREAT DISMAL SWAMP LYTTON J. MUSSELMAN, DANIELL. NICKRENT,1 AND GERALD F. LEVY This flora is an enumeration of the vascular plants growing without cultivation in the Great Dismal Swamp. It is hoped that this work will be of value to the rapidly increasing number of persons visiting the swamp, particularly since the establishment of the Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in 1973. Great pains have been taken to ensure completeness of the inventory presented here. Yet, the Dismal Swamp is difficult to botanize, and additional species will undoubtedly be added to the present list. Previous botanical work in the swamp is listed in Kirk et al. (in press). LOCATION AND EXTENT OF AREA The Great Dismal Swamp, which occupies about 104,000 ha. of North Carolina and Virginia (Figure 1), is one of the largest remaining swamp forests on the Coastal Plain. Although the swamp is considered to be centered around Lake Drummond in the Virginia cities of Suffolk and Chesapeake, it extends into the North Carolina counties of Currituck, Camden, Perquimans, Gates, and Pasquotank. Except for the western edge, which is delimited by the Suffolk Escarpment (Henry, 1970), the boundaries of the swamp are not sharply defined. TOPOGRAPHY AND DRAINAGE The Dismal Swamp is situated on a low, poorly drained flat marine terrace which ranges from 4.5 to 7 m. -

Amauropelta (Thelypteridaceae) da Estação Ecológica do Panga, Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brasil) O presente trabalho apresenta o tratamento taxonômico para as espécies de Thelypteris subgênero Amauropelta que ocorrem na Estação Ecológica do Panga. Thelypteridaceae mostrou-se uma das mais representativas da pteridoflora local, com 14 espécies de Thelypteris segregadas em quatro subgêneros (Amauropelta, Cyclosorus, Goniopteris e Meniscium). Na área de estudo, o subgênero Amauropelta está representado por quatro espécies, Thelypteris heineri, T. mosenii, T. opposita e T. rivularioides. São apresentadas descrições, chave para identificação das espécies, comentários, distribuição geográfica e ilustrações dos caracteres diagnósticos. This broad generic concept has been adopted in several recent taxonomic treatments, including the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group I. However, the infrageneric taxonomy of Deparia still needs further revision. In this study, we provide a new infrageneric classification with five sections and three subsections based on the phylogenetic evidence. -

Field Trip McDowell County Panther Wildlife Management Area April 24-26 The West Virginia Native Plant Society will conduct a field trip to Panther Wildlife Management Area, in McDowell County. The area consists of a very old second growth hardwood forest dominated with hemlock. Spring wildflowers such as Fern-Leaf Phacelia, Large Yellow Lady’s Slipper, Long-Flowered Alumroot, Showy Orchis, Mandarin, Galax, Whorled Pogonia, and Recurved Fetterbush should be near their peak in this southern tip of West Virginia. The foliage of fern is highly valued in the international florist greenery market because of its long post-harvest life, low cost, year round availability and versatile design qualities in form, texture and colour. Ferns (Pteridophytes) are the seedless vascular plants, dominated the vegetation on earth about 280-230 million years ago. Although they are now largely replaced by the seed bearing vascular plants in the existing flora today, yet they constitute a fairly prominent part of the present day vegetation of the world. India with a highly variable climate has a rich diversity of its flora and Pteridophytic flora greatly contributes to its diversity. Pteridophytes also form an interesting and conscious part of our national flora with their distinctive ecological distributional pattern.
