Sawflies (Hymenoptera, Symphyta) of the Bohemian Forest and Its Foothills
Silva Gabreta vol. 20 (3) p. 131–147 Vimperk, 2014 Sawflies (Hymenoptera, Symphyta) of the Bohemian Forest and its foothills Karel Beneš Kreuzmannova 14, CZ-31800 Plzeň, Czech Republic [email protected] Abstract The sawflies (Hymenoptera, Symphyta) collected in the Bohemian Forest and its foothills during the sum- mer months of 1981–1985 are listed. To gain a more comprehensive overview of symphytan fauna of the region, data published by former authors have been critically analysed and evaluated to give the most possi- bly comprehensive list of species. Altogether, 173 species (Xyelidae: 1, Pamphiliidae: 17, Argidae: 6, Cim- bicidae: 6, Diprionidae: 5, Tenthredinidae: 126, Xiphydriidae: 1, Siricidae: 4, Cephidae: 5, and Orussidae: 1) are registered. Of these, three are registered as endangered and fifteen as vulnerable. Key words: Symphyta, Šumava Mts., Böhmerwald, faunistics, host plants INTRODUCTION In recent years several attempts to evaluate the symphytan fauna of some interesting central European montane regions have been published, e.g., from the Low Tatras National Park (ROLLER et al. 2006), Jizeské Hory Mts. (MACEK 2006), Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (MACEK 2012), and the Giant Mts. (BENEš 2013). However, the sawfly fauna of the Bo- hemian Forest (Šumava in Czech, Böhmerwald in German) has received in last 120 years only little attention and remained practically unknown. While the fauna of several groups of invertebrates (Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Aranea, aquatic Crustacea, Ephemeroptera, Odona- ta, Plecoptera, Megaloptera, and Trichoptera) of the mountains and foothills comprising the Bohemian Forest is fairly well known, our knowledge of Symphyta is negligible, and only a few older publications mention this territory. -

In the Fort St James Forest District, in central British Columbia, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) (Fd) grows at the northern limit of its North American range. At the district level the species is rare (representing 1% of timber stands), and in the early 1990's growing populations of the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuage Hopkins) threatened the loss of all mature Douglas-fir habitat in the district. -

Many Flea Beetles are among the most affective jumpers in the animal kingdom, sometimes better than their namesakes the true Fleas (Siphonaptera). However, despite some intensive study of the anatomy and function of the metafemoral spring (Barth, 1954; Ker, 1977) the true function of this jumping mechanism remains a mystery. It probably is some sort of voluntary Catch, in- volving build-up of tension from the large muscles that insert on the metafemoral spring (Fig. 1), and theo a quick release of this energy. Ofcourse some Flea Beetles jump better than others, but basically all have this internal metafemoral spring floating by attachment from large muscles in the relatively enlarged bind femoral capsule (see Fig. 1 ). In fact Flea Beetles can usually be easily separated from other beetles, including chrysomelid subfa- milies, by their greatly swollen bind femora. There are a few genera of Alticinae that have a metafemoral spring and yet do not jump. Actually there are a few genera that are considered to be Alticinae that lack the metafemo- ral spring, e. g. Orthaltica (Scherer, 1974, 1981b - as discussed in this Symposium). Also the tribe Decarthrocerini contains three genera from Africa that Wilcox (1965) con- sidered as Galerucinae, but now thinks to be intermediate between Galerucinae and Alti- cinae; at least one of these genera does have a metafemoral spring (Wilcox, personal communication, and Fürth, unpublished data). -

This study was carried out in 2000–2004 on strawberry plantations in Tukums, Rîga, Do- bele, and Limbaþi districts. Insects were collected from strawberry fields by pitfall trapping, sweep netting and leaf sampling methods. A total of 137 insect species belonging to seven orders and 41 families were identified to species. Of the phytophagous insects, the order Orthoptera was represented by one species, other orders by a larger number of species: Hymenoptera (3), Dip- tera (16), Lepidoptera (20), Thysanoptera (21), Hemiptera (39), and Coleoptera (37). Of the re- corded insects, 48 species have a status of general strawberry pests. Key words: Fragaria × ananassa, strawberry pests, insect diversity. Munis Entomology & Zoology, 11 (2): 682-690] ABSTRACT: This work is presented a comparative list of the leaf beetles of the provinces in Marmara Region of Turkey, excluding Bruchinae. All known taxa from the provinces in Marmara Region of Turkey and thereby European Turkey are given in the present text. KEY WORDS: Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, European Turkey, Marmara Region, Turkey Any direct research on leaf beetles in Marmara Region of Turkey is not present. Therefore fauna of leaf beetles in Marmara Region of Turkey is not sufficiently known. Chiefly, a complete faunistic information about all the leaf beetle taxa established in European Turkey in Marmara Region of Turkey was firstly published by Löbl & Smetana (2010) in their Palaearctic catalogue of Chrysomeloidea. Then, an important study titled “Checklist of leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) of Turkey, excluding Bruchinae” was published by Ekiz et al. (2013). Later works were published by Özdikmen (2014a,b,c), Özdikmen & Kaya (2014), Özdikmen & Mercan (2014), Özdikmen & Cihan (2014), Özdikmen & Özbek (2014), Özdikmen & Kavak (2014) and Özdikmen & Topcu (2014). Although the mentioned studies helped to determine the list of leaf beetles from the provinces in Marmara Region of Turkey, the list needs further corrections to be fully and correctly realized. -

Dezember 2011 Band 13, Heft 2 S. 119-172 Die Käferfauna (Coleoptera) des NSG "Wernsdorfer See" bei Berlin unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Kurzflügler (Staphylinidae) Manfred Uhlig, Joachim Schulze, Barbara Uhlig & Jürgen Vogel Summary The beetle fauna (Coleoptera) of the Nature conservation area "Wernsdorfer See" near Berlin with special reference to rove beetles (Staphylinidae) The Nature conservation area "Wernsdorfer See" is situated 27 km southeast of the centre of Berlin in the federal state (Bundesland) Brandenburg at the border of Berlin. An inventory research program for recording the fauna of Coleoptera of this area has been carried out by the staff of the Museum of Natural History Berlin since the 1970’s to 1989 (intensively from 1979 to 1981, later occasionally). Using various collecting methods, 776 Coleoptera species have been recorded. 84 of these species (10.8%) are more or less endangered and placed on the Red List of Brandenburg. The rove beetles (Staphylinidae) have been investigated particularly, thus 300 species were recorded, 56 species of which (= 18.7 %) are placed on the Red List of endangered species. The rove beetle species Stenus glabellus THOMSON, 1870, Stenus intermedius REY, 1884, Stenus kiesenwetteri ROSENHAUER, 1856, Philonthus salinus KIESENWETTER, 1844, Euryporus picipes (PAYKULL, 1800), Tachyporus pulchellus MANNERHEIM, 1841, Oligota inflata (MANNERHEIM, 1830), Myrmecocephalus concinnus (ERICHSON, 1839) and Schistoglossa curtipennis (SHARP, 1869) are especially remarkable for the fauna of Brandenburg as well as the weevil species Bagous lutosus (GYLLENHAL, 1827). Zusammenfassung Das Naturschutzgebiet "Wernsdorfer See" liegt 27 km südöstlich vom Zentrum Berlins entfernt im Bundesland Brandenburg. In diesem stadtnahen NSG wurde eine Inventarforschung zur Erfassung der Käferfauna seit Ende der 1970er Jahre bis 1989 (intensiv 1979-1981, sporadisch danach) durch Mitarbeiter des Museums für Naturkunde betrieben. -

Wei: Príspevok k poznaniu fauny hrubopásych (Hymenoptera, Symphyta) Národného parku Nízke Tatry Abstrakt: Počas deviateho medzinárodného pracovného stretnutia špecialistov na hrubopáse blanokrídlovce (Hymenoptera, Symphyta) v júni 2005 bol vykonaný ľaunistický prieskum hrubopásych na viacerých lokalitách Národného parku Nízke Tatry. Celkovo bolo zaznamenaných 200 druhov a osem čeľadí hrubopásych. Ďalších dvanásť taxónov nebolo identifikovaných do druhu. Dolerus altivolus, D. hibernicus, Eriocampa dorpatica, Euura hastatae, Fenella monilicornis, Nematus yokohamensis tavastiensis, Pachynematus clibrichellus. Phyllocolpa excavata, P. polita, P. ralieri, Pontania gallarum, P. virilis, Pristiphora breadalbanensis, P. coactula a Tenthredo ignobilis boli zistené na Slovensku po prvýkrát. Významný počet ľaunistický zaujímavých nálezov naznačuje vysokú zachovalosť študovaných prírodných stanovíšť v širšom okolí Demänovskej a Jánskej doliny, Svarína a v národnej prírodnej rezervácii Turková. Kľúčové slová: Hymenoptera, Symphyta, Národný park Nízke Tatry, ľaunistický výskum INTRODUCTION Sawflies are the primitive phytophagous hymenopterans (suborder Symphyta), represented in Europe by 1366 species (LISTON, 1995; TAEGER & BLANK, 2004; TAEGER et al., 2006). In Slovakia, about 650 species belonging to 13 families of the Symphyta should occur (ROLLER, 1999). -

Annex 1…………………………………………...………………………………………………6 Green tiger beetle 1 1 Introduction Bonnyfield Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is located in the urbanised area of Bonnybridge in Falkirk. The core area of Bonnyfield LNR is 28.7 hectares in size (Figure 1). This brownfield site contains a valuable open mosaic habitat (OMH) with areas of wetland, ponds, scrub, woodland, and species-rich grassland. Through the previous use of the site as a sand and gravel quarry, there is a varied structure across the site with some slopes that were sculpted previously by Falkirk Council when they took over ownership in the late 1990s. Figure 1: Aerial view of Bonnyfield LNR The site is currently managed by Falkirk Council through the ranger service and volunteers from the local community council. The
