240 entomologische berichten 77 (5) 2017 Celypha aurofasciana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) na bijna 130 jaar weer terug in Nederland Frans Groenen Marcel Prick Arnold Schreurs TREFWOORDEN Goudlijnbladroller, herontdekking, levenswijze, Nederland Entomologische Berichten 77 (5): 240-242 In de Vijlenerbossen is in 2016 een mannetje van de goudlijnbladroller (Celypha aurofasciana) op licht gevangen. De laatste waarneming van deze soort in Nederland dateert van 1888. We gaan eerst in op het voorkomen in Nederland in de 19e eeuw. Daarna komen de kenmerken, biologie en de actuele verspreiding van deze bladroller in Europa aan de orde. Ten slotte stellen we de vraag waar de vlinder vandaan komt. Ook kenmerken, biologie en verspreiding worden besproken. Hoewel de soort in Europa wijd verbreid is, is ze zeldzaam en wordt ze slechts sporadisch waargenomen. In het zuiden van België is de vlinder recent op verschillende plaatsen opgedoken. Inspiring change for Important Invertebrate Areas in the UK Area 3 habitat assessments and pollinator surveys 11th September 2014 Susan Thompson - Grants & Trusts Officer October 2016 (Updated April 2017) Jamie Robins Saving the small things that run the planet Executive Summary Buglife Services were commissioned by Kier Group Ltd in July 2016 to undertake a series of baseline habitat surveys within the Area 3 network, to identify sites where improvements for pollinators could be implemented. These results were then used to identify ten sites with the highest potential and deliverability, using a ranking exercise, in addition to a Kier owned depot. Buglife Services undertook more detailed habitat assessments and pollinator surveys during brief site visits in August 2016. Of the 11 sites surveyed, a total of 104 pollinator species were recorded. This comprised 18 Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), 33 Hoverflies, 18 other Diptera (true flies), 14 bees, 6 other hymenoptera and 11 other minor pollinators (e.g. true bugs and beetles). A further 38 incidental (non-pollinator) species were also recorded. These results and habitat assessments were used to provide management suggestions to enhance the value of these sites for pollinators. Where possible suggestions aimed to benefit key species recorded during site surveys, such as the Chalk hill blue butterfly (Polyommatus coridon), the Section 41 priority species Straw belle moth (Aspitates gilvaria) and the scarce (Nb) wasp Microdynerus exilis. Finally, recommendations for future survey and monitoring were provided, aiming to inform Kier of the progression of habitat improvements for pollinators and advise future management. Introduction There has been a growing interest in managing road verges and other transport features more sensitively for biodiversity. -

Summer is well under way, if you call the wet and windy weather we have had in June a summer! The season to date seems to have been very poor weather wise. I was trapping in late May in Dorset for Dingy Mocha and the temperature at dawn was 3.5 degrees centigrade – I’ve known warmer nights in the middle of winter! Mind you, I did catch a single example of the target species just showing that moths will fly even in far from perfect conditions. If I had been at home I probably would not have bothered running the traps. A few other recent trips have also brought home the importance of overnight trapping. On a BENHS meeting in Lincolnshire surveying for Marsh Moth many of the participants left around midnight. The first of 6 examples of this rare animal arrived half an hour later. Similarly, on a trip to the Wyre Forest for Common Fan-foot the only example arrived after 3:00am and on Salisbury Plain last week the first of 23 Pale Shining Brown again came in after midnight. This was a very ‘exciting’ evening as the site adjoins a military range – moth trapping to the accompaniment of machine gun fire and main battle tanks roaring backwards and forwards was an interesting experience! The moral of all this is clear. If at all possible consider spending the night on site when moth trapping. -

Many Flea Beetles are among the most affective jumpers in the animal kingdom, sometimes better than their namesakes the true Fleas (Siphonaptera). However, despite some intensive study of the anatomy and function of the metafemoral spring (Barth, 1954; Ker, 1977) the true function of this jumping mechanism remains a mystery. It probably is some sort of voluntary Catch, in- volving build-up of tension from the large muscles that insert on the metafemoral spring (Fig. 1), and theo a quick release of this energy. Ofcourse some Flea Beetles jump better than others, but basically all have this internal metafemoral spring floating by attachment from large muscles in the relatively enlarged bind femoral capsule (see Fig. 1 ). In fact Flea Beetles can usually be easily separated from other beetles, including chrysomelid subfa- milies, by their greatly swollen bind femora. There are a few genera of Alticinae that have a metafemoral spring and yet do not jump. Actually there are a few genera that are considered to be Alticinae that lack the metafemo- ral spring, e. g. Orthaltica (Scherer, 1974, 1981b - as discussed in this Symposium). Also the tribe Decarthrocerini contains three genera from Africa that Wilcox (1965) con- sidered as Galerucinae, but now thinks to be intermediate between Galerucinae and Alti- cinae; at least one of these genera does have a metafemoral spring (Wilcox, personal communication, and Fürth, unpublished data). -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006).
