The College is ideas, great and small. The College is books and the Internet. Published in 2013 by Wolfson College, Cambridge The College is gates, gardens, paths, Barton Road, Cambridge CB3 9BB courts, and plaques, and a sundial. © Wolfson College, 2013 The College is Lee Library, the Dining Hall, and Bredon House. The College is students, and tutors, and Fellows. The College is fellowship, principles, and ritual. And the College, this College, Wolfson College, Cambridge, is much more. For this remarkable College is a diverse universe, ever expanding. From this College, in their diversity, those who study, guide, and reside here seek knowledge and truth in myriad ways. From this College, this special place, those who study, guide, and reside here seek to create, to find, to explore, to challenge, and to validate. Although I see the Review more as a yearbook, as a record covering the entire academic year 2012–2013, I do not repeat subject matter already covered in Ring True. Therefore, for example, you will not find mention of the exhibitions arranged by the Fine Arts Committee – but Peter DowlingPeter perhaps our readers would like to see further images of them? It is always great to have news from our community to share, and I thank the many alumni and current College members for their emails and other communications. We also manage to compile a respectable list of ‘Books by College Members’ but I suspect that we are missing out on quite a few, especially perhaps from our overseas alumni. Books are the main scholarly vehicle in the arts and humanities but in the sciences, journal articles are the primary means to communicate the results of research (not a surprise to me as an ex-research physicist and having started my publishing career as an Editor on Nature). So far we have never included refereed papers, partly because the selection criteria (‘best paper’?) are less easy to define, and given the prolific output, the list may become unmanageably long. Perhaps a listing on the College website? The thoughts of our readers would be most welcome. We work within a finite page budget to ensure that we can distribute the Review to our worldwide readership. With a little nudging, I hope I have nonetheless managed to collect quite a variety of items, and that you will enjoy reading about what our members are up to. Inevitably I have had to edit and condense many submissions and I can only ask for forgiveness from our authors for turning their beautifully composed prose reports into rather more concise abstracts or summaries. The task of an Editor is never an easy one! Finally, my thanks must go to those who helped with reading and with collating the student, visitor and University lists, and especially to the Alumni & Development team for their support in assembling diverse information, sourcing photographs, verifying facts and careful proof-reading. [email protected] Foreword www.WolfsonPlus.com 5 From the President Professor Sir Richard Evans looks back over the highlights of the year, and forward to our 50th Anniversary. As the College approaches its 50th Anniversary milestone in 2015, we have launched a Campaign with the target of raising £5 million. Wolfson’s endowment is still small compared to those of most other Cambridge Colleges, and we need to build it up so we can refurbish our ageing buildings and provide scholarships and bursaries for our students as fees and living expenses increase and government support is cut back. The 50th Anniversary Campaign has got off to a very good start, with an exceptionally generous grant of £1.25 million from the Wolfson Foundation to help upgrade the residences which the Foundation enabled us to build in the mid-1970s, and a munificent donation from His Excellency Mahfouz bin Mahfouz, Lord of Abernethy, GCMLJ, FRSA, which we will use for student support. Our alumni have continued to be enormously supportive of the College. The year has been academically successful for the College too, with Professor Jon Crowcroft elected Fellow of the Royal Society, Dr Steve Hoath Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Professor George Salmond Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiologists. Senior Member Mrs Sherry Coutu was appointed CBE for services to entrepreneurship, while Senior Member Dr Rupert Curwen received two Queen’s Awards for his company Ubisense. And we were all delighted when Honorary Fellow the Honorable Janet Wolfson de Botton CBE, Chairman of the Trustees of the Wolfson Foundation, was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Wolfson’s students continue to improve their academic performance, with more than a quarter of Officers our undergraduate Tripos candidates obtaining First Class Honours in 2013 and Wolfson Master’s and Doctoral students gaining a very good record of achievement. The revived Research Event in May showcased the achievements of our graduate students and was the occasion for an inspiring speech by Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor and Wolfson Honorary Fellow Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, who stayed on to listen to students’ presentations and chat with them over dinner. Though it’s hard to believe, our Director of Music, Lynette Alcántara, celebrated 20 years as conductor of the Choir this year, marked by a splendid concert and a surprise party afterwards; we hope she continues for a long time to come. Its active and inclusive musical life is one of the aspects of Wolfson that gives it a real sense of community, and much of this is down to Lyn. 6 The Wolfson Review 2012–2013 Building a strong foundation Wolfson College will reach its 50th Anniversary in 2015. As we approach this milestone in our history, three College Officers report on progress and developments at Wolfson throughout this year. Christopher Lawrence, Bursar The Staff Wolfson is going through a period where several long-serving senior staff are reaching retirement, providing opportunities for the © Louis Sinclair College to celebrate their contributions while causing anxiety about how someone seemingly irreplaceable could be succeeded. Following David Luhrs (Head Porter) in 2011 and Jonathan Beart (College Accountant) in 2012, it was the turn of our Clerk of Works, Paul Chapman, to retire in the summer of 2013. Paul joined Wolfson in 1995 from the building firm Rattee & Kett, for whom he had been directly involved in the building of the Lee Library and R, S and T residence blocks, so his connection with the College goes back even further. We wish Paul well in his retirement, and we are pleased to have been able to promote his Assistant Clerk of Works, Neil Newman, to succeed him.
