    One of the legendary winemakers of the world, Bruno Giacosa crafted the most prestigious single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco wines during a career that spanned nearly eight decades. He joined the family business at the age of 15, representing the third generation of his Langhe winemaking family. Giacosa’s unfailing pursuit of perfection, his unrivaled palate and his intimate knowledge of vineyards in the Langhe quickly drew recognition and helped establish Piedmont as a leading wine region. In 1980, Giacosa began to acquire prime parcels in Serralunga d’Alba, La Morra and Barbaresco to produce wines that are rightly regarded as the finest expressions of Nebbiolo. His legacy rests with daughter Bruna, who continues to uphold her father’s winemaking philosophy to respect traditional techniques while using the best of modern technology. Total acidity: 5.10 g/L pH: 3.30 Total extract: 22.5 g/L Sensory analysis: Intense straw colored with greenish glints. The nose presents lemon, pineapple, peach and apricot notes with floral hints. On the palate, it is fresh, full-bodied, with mineral notes and a persistent finish.

Szalay EDITORIAL AS the recent Free Kuwait leaflets, badges and banners have amply demonstrated, Stoics may be removed but not remote from issues of international concern, such as possible conflict in the Gulf. or urgent questions about European integration, economic, political and social. Pineapple Day on 20th May was an equally vivid, if more domestic, illustration of active Stoic care and generosity. Staff and Stoics alike gave up their weekend to organise and participate, alongside the local community, in a variety of events which raised over £10,000. Our report and photographs are graphic testimony to the free interplay of charity and fun. On another summer occasion, Speech and Old Stoic Day, the Headmaster's maiden address emphasised that, marvellous as Stowe's heritage and beauty are, it is primarily the people here who endow the School with its purpose and character. That Stoic spirit of adventure was no less evident in last year's expeditions to the Galapagos and Nepal, the absorbing accounts of which are given within these pages. Daunted by neither size nor distance, individual initiatives look Stoics to South Africa, the Soviet Union, as well as Luxemburg and Liechtenstein, among other European mini-states.

    Fit for Kings BAROLO, THE LEGENDARY ITALIAN GRAPE OF YORE, IS RIPE FOR ASIAN ROYALTY, WRITES JAMES SUCKLING taly’s great grape, barolo, has long been called the “king of wines and the wine of kings.” But the structured red still remains relatively undiscovered in most of Asia. “It’s still hard to convince most fine-wine lovers in Asia about Barolo, even though our region is very much like Burgundy with its mostly small vineyard holdings and Ifamily-owned wineries,” says Pio Boffa, the owner of Pio Cesare, one of the top names in Barolo. Boffa adds that most of the top wines are made in limited quantities – as little as a few hundred cases. Indeed, Barolo tastes like red Burgundy of Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, in many ways. It has a lighter colour than considered two of the great wine towns in most other reds, a delicate and complex fruit the region; Barolo has its top villages as well, character, and bright and lively acidity.   • 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Force Majeure Vineyard
    2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Force Majeure Vineyard Overview Force Majeure Vineyards produces small quantities of Bordeaux- and Rhone-based wines from Eastern Washington’s celebrated Red Mountain AVA. Launched by Paul and Susan McBride in 2004 under the name Grand Reve Vintners, the winery has been making highly-acclaimed, terroir-driven wines under the Force Majeure moniker since the 2009 vintage. The winery achieved critical praise for its Collaboration Series that featured fruit from the iconic Ciel de Cheval vineyard vinified by some of Washington’s top winemakers. In 2010 Force Majeure began producing wine from their Estate Vineyard, a steep, rocky site on the upper slopes of Red Mountain. In 2014, the winery hired Todd Alexander - a talented winemaker who had previously worked at Napa Valley’s Bryant Family Vineyard - to serve as head winemaker and general manager. Vineyard and Winemaking Our Estate Force Majeure vineyard was the first planting on the steep, upper slopes of Red Mountain. Its nine distinct soil types were formed by ancient floods, winds and volcanic activity. To accommodate the complexity of the soils and terrain, the vineyard was divided into 26 micro-blocks. All varieties, clonal selections, trellising and irrigation systems were carefully matched to the conditions of each individual block. Tasting Notes Our flagship wine, this bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the distinctive character of our Estate vineyard. It is quite dark with a powerful bouquet marked by cedar, earth and black fruit. The flavors are rich, concentrated and complete. The generous underpinnings of tannins are woven discreetly into the wine’s finish.
