West Side Wine Club May 2011 President’s Musings ! ! April showers bring…. May showers. Our cool spring continues, although the grapevines have budded, the next stumbling block is blossoming. Once blossoming has occurred, the rate of ripening is has little room for variation. A grape, after all, can only ripen so fast. But there are factors at work that do effect ripening. In a perfect year, we would have 80 degree days all day, never over- but Scheduled Meetings rarely under. January 19, 2011 During this time period, we watch carefully hoping to purchase good grapes. This year has been a Crush Talk struggle so far. Viticulturists in eastern Washington have been hesitant to commit so far. The freeze January 22, 2011 last fall has wine makers running around trying to find out how much they have and if they can Holiday Party/Awards replace any shortfalls. This means that when the growers tells us what’s available, we will need to Gala jump on our orders to insure we can get a variety of grapes. Some grapes will not be a problem. Others will be difficult to purchase. Sammy has been in discussions with growers and will let us know February 16, 2011 when he knows more. Red Bordeaux Tasting But this is also a time to think about purchasing barrels. May15th is the deadline for purchasing February 27, 2011 barrels at Bouchard cooperages at a discount and with no shipping cost. They make Damy, Vicard, Argyle Winery Tour Billon and Cadus barrels. All their barrels are quite good, although each provides different component to a wine. -

2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Force Majeure Vineyard
2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Force Majeure Vineyard Overview Force Majeure Vineyards produces small quantities of Bordeaux- and Rhone-based wines from Eastern Washington’s celebrated Red Mountain AVA. Launched by Paul and Susan McBride in 2004 under the name Grand Reve Vintners, the winery has been making highly-acclaimed, terroir-driven wines under the Force Majeure moniker since the 2009 vintage. The winery achieved critical praise for its Collaboration Series that featured fruit from the iconic Ciel de Cheval vineyard vinified by some of Washington’s top winemakers. In 2010 Force Majeure began producing wine from their Estate Vineyard, a steep, rocky site on the upper slopes of Red Mountain. In 2014, the winery hired Todd Alexander - a talented winemaker who had previously worked at Napa Valley’s Bryant Family Vineyard - to serve as head winemaker and general manager. Vineyard and Winemaking Our Estate Force Majeure vineyard was the first planting on the steep, upper slopes of Red Mountain. Its nine distinct soil types were formed by ancient floods, winds and volcanic activity. To accommodate the complexity of the soils and terrain, the vineyard was divided into 26 micro-blocks. All varieties, clonal selections, trellising and irrigation systems were carefully matched to the conditions of each individual block. Tasting Notes Our flagship wine, this bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the distinctive character of our Estate vineyard. It is quite dark with a powerful bouquet marked by cedar, earth and black fruit. The flavors are rich, concentrated and complete. The generous underpinnings of tannins are woven discreetly into the wine’s finish. -

2016 Force Majeure Épinette
2014 2016 FORCE MAJEUREESTATE GROWN ÉPINETTE RED WINE BLEND ÈPINETTE Our Red Mountain Right-bankRED MOUNTAINBordeaux inspired blend, “Épin- ette,” spent 22 months in 65% new French oak after a long macera- tion and fermentation in both concrete and stainless steel vats. The blend changes each vintage, either being dominated by Merlot or Cabernet Franc. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. I loved the 2016 Epinette from barrel, and it certainly doesn't disappoint from bottle. Sporting a deep purple color as well as a huge bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, smoked earth, chocolate, and cedary spice, this flamboyant, powerful beauty hits the palate with loads of fruit, has sweet tannins, no hard edges, 46% Merlot / 35% Cabernet Franc / building tannins, and a huge finish. It's one seriously pleasure-bent 16% Cabernet Sauvignon / 3% Petit Verdot Fermented in concrete effort that has another 10-15 years of prime drinking.“– 96 points, and stainless closed top tanks Jeb Dunnuck 65% new French oak Native yeast, 3-5 day cold soaks, up to 25 day macerations Merlot and Franc received more punch-downs “Dark full ruby. Violet lift to the aromas of blackberry, black while Cabernet received more pumpovers rasp-berry, licorice, subtle peppery herbs and minerals. 100% free run Wonderfully plush but youthfully unevolved, conveying a 310 cases produced smoother texture and more class than the Cabernet, as well as a deeper kernel of primary fruit despite the fact that this is a Bordeaux blend and not a vari-etal Cabernet Sauvignon. A bit less thick and overwhelming than the Cabernet, and more complex and delineated. -
Force Majeure Vineyards with Owner Paul Mcbride $10 Tasting Fee
Wicked Cellars Tasting Notes Saturday, December 8th; 4-7 pm Force Majeure Vineyards with Owner Paul McBride $10 Tasting Fee Paul McBride and vineyard manager Ryan Johnson first launched Force Majeure Vineyards as "Grand Reve Vintners" in 2004. Grand Reve quickly achieved critical praise and a loyal following for both its wines and vineyard efforts. Now with a new name, Force Majeure is building on its initial success with continued innovation in winegrowing and winemaking. The term "Force Majeure" describes the powerful and relentless elements of Nature that form the terroir of our vineyards. It also describes the unstoppable force that occurs when the highest level of viticulture combines with an all-star ensemble of Washington State winemaking talent. Their goal is to present a portfolio of wines that compare with the finest in the world. Ryan Johnson, Force Majeure Vineyards' partner and vineyard manager, oversees several of Red Mountain’s finest vineyards including the renowned Ciel du Cheval, individually selecting the rows of vines to be custom-farmed to his exacting standards for this project. The best of that fruit is presented to a team of talented winemakers who craft it into innovative, limited-production wines that uniquely express their Red Mountain origins. Winemakers include: Ben Smith of Cadence, Mark McNeilly and Mike Macmorran of Mark Ryan Winery, Ross Mickel of Ross Andrew Winery, Carolyn Lakewold of Donedei, Chris Gorman of Gorman Winery and James Mantone of Syncline Cellars. 2011 Collaboration Series Viognier $32.99 70% of this Viognier comes from Force Majeure’s ankle-busting hillside planting with the remaining 30% from Ciel du Cheval. -
Force Majeure Epinette Force Majeure Vineyards United States - Washington - Red Mountain
Force Majeure Epinette Force Majeure Vineyards United States - Washington - Red Mountain Epinette is Force Majeure's Right-bank Bordeaux-inspired blend, and was named after an avenue in Libourne (France) that leads to Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, the home of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Epinette is also the name of a musical instrument akin to a piano, as well as a word for pine tree, which is a fitting nod to their home in Washington state. The wine itself is a blend of primarily Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, proportions of which change depending on the vintage. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc are grown in lower areas of the vineyard with deep, well-drained soils, much less rocky than the soils of our Rhone varietals.
