04 Part Two Chapter 4-5 Everett
PART TWO. "So what are you doing now?" "Well the school of course." "You mean youre still there?" "Well of course. I will always be there as long as there are students." (Jacques Lecoq, in a letter to alumni, 1998). 79 CHAPTER FOUR INTRODUCTION TO PART TWO. The preceding chapters have been principally concerned with detailing the research matrix which has served as a means of mapping the influence of the Lecoq school on Australian theatre. I have attempted to situate the research process in a particular theoretical context, adopting Alun Munslow's concept of `deconstructionise history as a model. The terms `diaspora' and 'leavening' have been deployed as metaphorical frameworks for engaging with the operations of the word 'influence' as it relates specifically to the present study. An interpretive framework has been constructed using four key elements or features of the Lecoq pedagogy which have functioned as reference points in terms of data collection, analysis and interpretation. These are: creation of original performance material; use of improvisation; a movement-based approach to performance; use of a repertoire of performance styles. These elements or `mapping co-ordinates' have been used as focal points during the interviewing process and have served as reference points for analysis of the interview material and organisation of the narrative presentation. The remainder of the thesis constitutes the narrative interpretation of the primary and secondary source material. This chapter aims to provide a general overview of, and introduction to the research findings. I will firstly outline a demographic profile of Lecoq alumni in Australia. Secondly I will situate the work of alumni, and the influence of their work on Australian theatre within a broader socio-cultural, historical context. -

Australian Multicultural Policy and Television Drama in Comparative Contexts
Australian multicultural policy and television drama in comparative contexts Harvey May BA (Comm), BA, B Bus (Hons)(Comm), Post Grad Dip Ed A thesis submitted in 2003 for the award of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Research and Applications Centre Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology Key Words Multiculturalism, Cultural Diversity, Television, Drama, Casting, Minorities, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, United States. Abstract This thesis examines changes which have occurred since the late 1980s and early 1990s with respect to the representation of cultural diversity on Australian popular drama programming. The thesis finds that a significant number of actors of diverse cultural and linguistic background have negotiated the television industry employment process to obtain acting roles in a lead capacity. The majority of these actors are from the second generation of immigrants, who increasingly make up a significant component of Australia’s multicultural population. The way in which these actors are portrayed on- screen has also shifted from one of a ‘performed’ ethnicity, to an ‘everyday’ portrayal. The thesis develops an analysis which connects the development and broad political support for multicultural policy as expressed in the National Agenda for a Multicultural Australia to the changes in both employment and representation practices in popular television programming in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The thesis addresses multicultural debates by arguing for a mainstreaming position. The thesis makes detailed comparison of cultural diversity and television in the jurisdictions of the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand to support the broad argument that cultural diversity policy measures produce observable outcomes in television programming. -
RUSSIA in GLOBAL AFFAIRS
RUSSIA in GLOBAL AFFAIRS Vol. 4•No. 4•OCTOBER – DECEMBER•2006 Contents From Nationalism to Nation Fyodor Lukyanov 5 Russia – A Divided Nation? Kondopoga: A Warning Bell Alexander Dugin 8 The events that exploded to the surface in that small microcosm of Russian society reflect the country’s situation on the ethnic, professional and psy- chological plane. Kondopoga may blaze a trail into the abyss for all of us, as the road of interethnic tensions will only lead to Russia’s collapse, to a finale where it will lose its leading positions in global geopolitics. Non-Islamic Extremism in Today’s Russia Nikolai Mitrokhin 14 The Russian elite has made a choice in favor of a right-wing conservative and isolationist ideology and policy, which is reminiscent of the era of McCarthyism in the United States. The authorities and large national capi- tal defend their property and domestic market from strangers and occasion- ally expand, if need be. Islam, the Way We See It Alexei Malashenko 28 Russia’s attitude to Islam and Muslims also fits into the general context of xenophobia that in the first half of the 1990s was considered to be a hang- over of post-totalitarian thinking; 10 years later, however, it has turned into a core element of the public consciousness. The Conflict of Civilizations: What Is in Store for Russia? 42 Mikhail Demurin It would be better to avoid any more labor migrants, whose inflow has reached a scale likely to jeopardize the ethnic and cultural balance in Russia’s major cities and in the Russian Federation on the whole.
