Among birds, many studies have shown that tropical species have a slower pace of life than temperate-breeding species. -

Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The nominal species Temognatha duponti (Boisduval, 1835) and T. barbiventris (Carter, 1916) are considered conspecific. The specific name barbiventris (Carter, 1916) syn. nov. is a subjective synonym of the name duponti (Boisduval, 1835). The nominal species Temognatha stevensii (Gehin, 1855) is not considered conspecific with Temognatha duponti (Boisduval, 1835). The specific name stevensii (Gehin, 1855) is revalidated as the name of the species Temognatha stevensii (Gehin, 1855). The specific name tibialis (Waterhouse, 1874) is a subjective synonym of the name stevensii (Gehin, 1855). The prevailing usage (ICZN, Article 33.3.1) of the name stevensii over stewensii is preserved for the species Temognatha stevensii (Gehin, 1855). Both valid species are diagnosed/redescribed and illustrated, and their relationships, biology and distributions are discussed. Complete synonymies and references, and photos/illustrations of some diagnostic head, elytral and genitalic structural features, are also provided. The Temognatha grandis and T. stevensii species-groups are defined. Lectotypes are designated for Buprestis duponti Boisduval, 1835 and Stigmodera tibialis Waterhouse, 1874. (Casuarinaceae) is recorded here for the Australian buprestid beetle, Curis caloptera (Boisduval, 1835) (Coleóptera: Buprestidae) from South Maroota, Sydney district, New South Wales. The larval host plants recorded for two other species of Australian Curis are reviewed and discussed. The association with Casuarina is probably an ancient and co-evolutionary relation ship dating back to the Tertiary. Zusammenfassung: Erstmals wurde die Wirtspflanze Casuarina littoralis Salisb. (Casuarinaceae) der Larve des seltenen australischen Prachtkäfers Curis caloptera (Boisduval, 1835) (Coleóptera: Buprestidae) in South Maroota, Distrikt Sydney, Neusüdwales, gefunden. Die Wirtspflanzen der Larven zweier anderer Käferarten der australischen Gattung Curis werden vorgestellt und diskutiert. Die Bindung an Casuarina ist wahrscheinlich eine alte und Revolutionäre Beziehung, die bis ins Tertiär zurückreicht. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Calodema Supplementary Paper No. 30 : 1-7. Abstract: Cards depicting Buprestidae species (Coleoptera) from Australia in the Shell Picture Card series entitled Australian Beetles (1965) are reviewed in this paper. The original cards are supplied as illustrations with the original accompanying data. Comments on these data are provided wherever applicable. Introduction During the early to mid 1960’s the Shell Petroleum Company issued a number of Picture Card series dealing with the fauna and flora of Australia. The cards were handed out free at Shell service stations across the country (when petrol stations did give proper service!) and were housed in an album which was purchased separately. This paper reviews the Buprestidae (Coleoptera) of the Australian Beetles series (card numbers 301-360)(1965). The other beetle groups will be dealt with in other papers. The reason for these papers is to provide the illustrations and data for future workers since the Shell Picture Card series are rare and have seldom been referred to as a result. The nomenclature used here generally follows that of Bellamy (2003). (Fabaceae), is recorded here for the Australian buprestid beetle, Melobasis cupriceps (Kirby) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae: Buprestinae). Its habitat is briefly recorded and aspects of the larval/pupal chambers are described. Oxylobium aciculiferum has not been recorded previously as a host (either larval or adult) for any other Australian Buprestidae and this is the first larval record from the genus Oxylobium. Melobasis cupriceps has been recorded previously as breeding in the branches of Acacia longifolia (Andr.) Willd. (Mimosaceae). Zusammenfassung: Der Schmetterlingsblütler Oxylobium aciculiferum (F. Muell.) Benth. ist als neue Wirtspflanze der Larven des australischen Prachtkäfers Melobasis cupriceps (Kirby) (Col.: Buprestidae) festgestellt worden. Habitat und Aspekte der Puppenwiege des Käfers werden beschrieben. Weder Oxylobium aciculiferum noch eine andere Art der Gattung Oxylobium wurde bisher als Wirtspflanze für Larven oder Imagines der Buprestidenfauna gemeldet. Die Vermehrung von M . cupriceps war bisher nur in Zweigen von Acacia longifolia (Andr.) Willd. beobachtet worden. Introduction The genus Melobasis Laporte & Gory is comprised of at least 80 species found throughout Australia and some in Papua New Guinea (Carter 1923,1929). -

HISTORICAL AND SEASONAL CHANGES IN THE COMMUNITY OF FOREST BIRDS AT LONGNECK LAGOON NATURE RESERVE, SCHEYVILLE, NEW SOUTH WALES K. H. EGAN,1 J. R. FARRELL2 and D. L. PEPPER-EDWARDS3 11 Bowman Street, Mortdale, New South Wales 2223 273 Ellison Road, Springwood, New South Wales 2777 321 Arthur Street, Hornsby, New South Wales 2077 Received: 12 October, 1995 Observations dating back to 1937, banding data accumulated from 1965 to 1994 and census data collected from 1992 to 1995 have been used to show the changes in a community of forest birds at Longneck Lagoon Nature Reserve on an historical and seasonal level. Many resident species have disappeared from the site. These include Diamond Firetail, Zebra Finch, Hooded Robin, Red-capped Robin, Scarlet Robin, Flame Robin and Black-eared Cuckoo. Other species have declined markedly (Speckled Warbler, Weebill, Brown Treecreeper, Black-chinned Honeyeater, Jacky Winter and Fuscous Honeyeater) while some species have increased in numbers (Brown Thornbill, Superb Fairy- wren and Red-browed Finch). New additions to the community include Spotted Turtle-Dove, Red- whiskered Bulbul, Common Blackbird, Common Myna, Common Starling and House Sparrow, but these have not as yet made an observable impact on the proportions of native species within the community. Seasonal fluctuations in the community are quite marked with up to 34 non-resident species visiting the site with the Rose Robin being the only exclusively winter visitor. The only recorded movement greater than 2 km from the site, was that of a Sacred Kingfisher that travelled to central eastern Queensland. Interaction between the Brown and White-throated Treecreepers as well as the three species of finch (Red-browed Finch, Diamond Firetail and Double-barred Finch) is examined in light of their proportional representation of the resident community.
