Hawkeswood & James R. Turner Abstract: The first larval host plant, Casuarina littoralis Salisb. (Casuarinaceae) is recorded here for the Australian buprestid beetle, Curis caloptera (Boisduval, 1835) (Coleóptera: Buprestidae) from South Maroota, Sydney district, New South Wales. The larval host plants recorded for two other species of Australian Curis are reviewed and discussed. The association with Casuarina is probably an ancient and co-evolutionary relation ship dating back to the Tertiary. Zusammenfassung: Erstmals wurde die Wirtspflanze Casuarina littoralis Salisb. (Casuarinaceae) der Larve des seltenen australischen Prachtkäfers Curis caloptera (Boisduval, 1835) (Coleóptera: Buprestidae) in South Maroota, Distrikt Sydney, Neusüdwales, gefunden. Die Wirtspflanzen der Larven zweier anderer Käferarten der australischen Gattung Curis werden vorgestellt und diskutiert. Die Bindung an Casuarina ist wahrscheinlich eine alte und Revolutionäre Beziehung, die bis ins Tertiär zurückreicht. Calodema Supplementary Paper No. 30 : 1-7. Abstract: Cards depicting Buprestidae species (Coleoptera) from Australia in the Shell Picture Card series entitled Australian Beetles (1965) are reviewed in this paper. The original cards are supplied as illustrations with the original accompanying data. Comments on these data are provided wherever applicable. Introduction During the early to mid 1960’s the Shell Petroleum Company issued a number of Picture Card series dealing with the fauna and flora of Australia. The cards were handed out free at Shell service stations across the country (when petrol stations did give proper service!) and were housed in an album which was purchased separately. This paper reviews the Buprestidae (Coleoptera) of the Australian Beetles series (card numbers 301-360)(1965). The other beetle groups will be dealt with in other papers. The reason for these papers is to provide the illustrations and data for future workers since the Shell Picture Card series are rare and have seldom been referred to as a result. The nomenclature used here generally follows that of Bellamy (2003). Species Card no. 315 - Regal Jewel Beetle, Calodema regale (Laporte & Gory) [as Calodema regalis L.& G.] Card data: “This magnificent insect is extremely well named because it is one of the most beautiful members of the Jewel Beetle family (Buprestidae). -

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

A review of the known natural values for this extension and the threats to those values highlighted significant knowledge gaps (Balmeret al., 2017). To redress these knowedge gaps, at least partially, a multi-disciplinary survey was undertaken in November 2019 to document flora, fauna and geodiversity values in part of the extension area known as the Central North Sector (CNS). -

Provisional List of Invertebrates Requiring Urgent Management
Australian Government Bushfire Recovery Package for Wildlife and their Habitat Provisional list of priority invertebrate species requiring urgent management intervention or on-ground assessment The 2019-20 fires of eastern and southern Australia have had severe impacts on many Australian animals and plants. Because there are far more invertebrate species than there are vertebrate or plant species, and many invertebrate species have very localised ranges, it is likely that the fires will have severely affected many more invertebrate than plant or vertebrate species. However, for invertebrate species, the severity of this impact can be challenging to assess, because distributional information is typically limited, there are few monitoring programs for invertebrates, there is limited information on the susceptibility of most invertebrates to fire, invertebrates are poorly represented on threatened species lists, and the conservation status of most invertebrate species is unknown. In order to help guide conservation responses, this report identifies 191 invertebrate species known or presumed to have been severely affected by the 2019-20 fires. This prioritisation is based mostly on spatial analysis of the extent of overlap between species’ distributional range and fire, with such analysis considering the following groups of Australian invertebrate species: • approximately 700 invertebrate species listed as threatened under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 or equivalent state and territory legislation or on the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species • invertebrate species considered to be of concern by state and territory agencies and by some experts, because of fire impacts • some taxonomic groups likely to contain many fire-affected species. The analysis considered potential impacts from fires in southern and eastern Australian between 1 July 2019 and 24 February 2020 identified in the National Indicative Aggregated Fire Extent Dataset.
