42 History, Background, Context The history of the Qing dynasty is of course the history of hundreds upon hundreds of millions of people. The volume, density, and complexity of the information contained in this history--"history" in the sense of the totality of what really happened and why--even if it were available would be beyond the capacity of any single individual to comprehend. Thus what follows is "history" in another sense--a selective recreation of the past in written form--in this case a sketch of basic facts about major episodes and events drawn from secondary sources which hopefully will provide a little historical background and allow the reader to place Pi Xirui and Jingxue lishi within a historical context. While the history of the Qing dynasty proper begins in 1644, history is continuous. The Jurchen (who would later call themselves Manchus), a northeastern tribal people, had fought together with the Chinese against the Japanese in the 1590s when the Japanese invaded Korea. However in 1609, after a decade of increasing military strength, their position towards the Chinese changed, becoming one of antagonism. Nurhaci1 努爾哈赤 (1559-1626), a leader who had united the Jurchen tribes, proclaimed himself to be their chieftain or Khan in 1616 and also proclaimed the 1See: ECCP, p.594-9, for his biography. 43 founding of a new dynasty, the Jin 金 (also Hou Jin 後金 or Later Jin), signifying that it was a continuation of the earlier Jurchen dynasty which ruled from 1115-1234. In 1618, Nurhaci led an army of 10,000 with the intent of invading China. -

Was their fall unavoidable, or at least clearly predictable? In fact, the collapse came from the combination of three great problems, an imperial authority weak and arbitrary, interior rebellions and exterior threats. Nothing of this was new: in its 250 years the dynasty had overcome similar crisis. But this time the problems intermingled in an inextricable way. The first element of the crisis came from the frail and erratic imperial authority. The Royal court entered the 17th century with the do-nothing Wanli emperor, who spent most of his reign secluded in his inner quarters. In the rather brief reign of his successor, from 1620 to 1627, palace factions went rife, and eunuchs attained unrestrained power. That allowed one of them, Wei Zhongxian, to build up an extensive network of agents that held the most important positions in the capital and in the provinces. Wei Zhongxian launched successive persecutions of the civil officials and suppressed with unrestrained ferocity the most influential association of scholars, the Donglin Academy, depriving the dynasty of hundreds of critical voices. Military were also affected, specially because their positions depended not only on the results of their specific examinations, but also on the whim of the emperor who could always promote or demote them. In the factionalist climate that prevailed at the court both victory and defeat could be falsified. few months the new emperor, Chongzhen, compelled him to commit suicide. -

However, they differ greatly in style although they have got the same name. A Mang robe in Ming Dynasty has big and wide body and sleeves, the same style as that of Han nationality. But the Mang robes of the Qing Dynasty bear the features of typical nomadic style with turtle neck, buttons on the right side, and horse-hoof sleeves. Although the Qing Mang robe system is from the Ming dynasty, only those external ornaments that can be accepted by the rulers remain. Rulers of Qing Dynasty believed that ornaments were only used to decorate the garments and there was no need to rigidly adhere to the external form. Keywords: Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, Mang robe 1. Introduction There were systems of Mang robes in Ming Dynasty, which was established by Han nationality and Qing Dynasty, which was set up by the Manchu. In the early period of the Qing Dynasty, ethnic tradition in clothing was stressed. But system of Mang robe was borrowed from the Ming dynasty. In addition, the system of Bufu and use of the twelve ornaments were all from clothing of those dynasties established by the Han people. The rulers of the Qing Dynasty believed that clothing system was closely linked with the regime and the clothing style with Manchu national characteristics was fundamental for the clothing system. -

The Taizhou Movement
The Taizhou Movement Being Mindful in Sixteenth Century China Johanna Lidén Academic dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Religion at Stockholm University to be publicly defended on Saturday 8 December 2018 at 10.00 in hörsal 7, Universitetsvägen 10 D. Abstract The aim of this thesis is to define and analyze the religious ideas, praxis and organizations of the Taizhou movement using the earliest sources from the Ming dynasty. The Taizhou movement originated with a salt merchant named Wang Gen (1493–1541), who became a disciple of the well-known Neo-Confucian philosopher Wang Yangming (1472–1529). Wang Gen’s thoughts were similar to his, but his ideas about protecting and respecting the self were new. These ideas and the pursuit of making one’s mind calm inspired his followers who, like Wang Gen, tried to put them into practice. The thesis contextualizes Wang Gen and some of his followers who where active in the sixteenth century such as Yan Jun, Luo Rufang and He Xinyin. It contains texts which have not been translated into English before. Contrary to previous research, the thesis proposes that the Taizhou practitioners did not form a “school” in the strict sense of the word but became a “movement”. The reason was that their ideas corresponded to the anxieties and concerns of people from all levels of society and that they engaged in social and religious activities on the local level. Their ideas and praxis are heterogeneous, a result of the free discussions that were held in private academies. The religious praxis of the Taizhou movement included singing, reciting, individual and communal meditation, discussions and ethical commitments.
