“Excellence Through Performance”

Dear Desert Vista Family,

As we wind down to the last few weeks of the first quarter, I would like to remind parents to check ParentVue to gauge where your child is in regards to his/her learning and encourage them to complete their work, prepare for assessments, communicate with teachers, attend before or after school tutoring supports by the teacher, and/or attend our Peer to Peer Tutoring Program (see times below).

We continue to partner with our Site Council, Student Council and Guidance Department and one of our main goals is providing information to students and parents regarding the social and emotional well-being our students. During lunch on Friday, September 29th, there will be several organizations on campus providing education and information to students on a variety of social and emotional wellness topics.

Our community partner, Teen Lifeline, is visiting schools across during the month of September to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Organizations on site may include, Teen Lifeline, GLSEN, 1 n 10 and Terros. Visiting with these organizations is completely voluntary. However, we would be pleased if you encouraged your child to stop by the lunchtime event and visit with the groups. The health and well-being of our students is our number one priority and we look forward to partnering with our families in the upcoming year as we strive to develop resilient, healthy, and happy young adults.

We are well into the fall season of our extra-curricular activities and I look forward to sending out more information to highlight all of our programs. I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to attend one of our amazing extra-curricular events. When you do, please make sure to stop and say hello, and let me know how things are going for you and your family. Please click on the DV Activities Calendar or see the attached DV Sports Calendar, for upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you there!

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalist must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Desert Vista High School is proud to recognize the following students as 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. Please join me in congratulating the following DV seniors:

Monica Essig Aberg Caleb Redshaw Aksel Laudon Nicholas Thatcher Shae Nicolaisen Jessica Wang Vinayak Parthasarathy Qihan “Jody” Zhu

Teacher/Coach Highlights: Congratulations to Vic Silva for being awarded the Arizona Speech and Debate Coach of the Year for the 2017-2018 school year by the Arizona Speech and Debate Coaches Association!

Coach Brittany Stanchik had this to say about Mr. Silva:

Coach of the Year is chosen by a committee of Arizona Speech and Debate coaches who are elected to their positions- that means the best of the best are choosing who receives this award! Mr. Silva exemplifies a true educator, especially in the coaching arena. While it's only natural to become entangled in numbers of a competition, Mr. Silva never fails to remind our students that the goal is not to win rather to "give your best and be your best in all that you do". This motto has served our team well. Under Ms. Silva we've brought home both countless State Championships and National placings. While these results are fantastic, they are minor in comparison to the growth that students experience during their time on the team.

Congratulations, Mr. Silva, and thank you for all you do!

Extra-Curricular Highlights: Thunder Force Links Crew Our Thunder Force Links Crew Academics committee did a fabulous job putting together 2 lunchtime lessons for our Freshmen.

Key Club: Blood Drive The Key Club just had their Fall Blood Drive, and it was very successful. They had 121 people sign up, and from that group, they were able to provide 82 pints of blood that United Blood Services can use. Their goal was 82, so they were pleased to reach it. There will be another Blood Drive in April 2018, and they would love to have more parents volunteer to give blood. They had between 5 and 10 parents sign up or walk in during the drive, and they want to thank all of you who came to donate.

Sports Highlights: Boys Cross Country Article courtesy of Senior, Nick Thatcher The Woodbridge Classic is one of the most anticipated and exhilarating meets of the year, not to mention one of the most competitive. This year’s Woodbridge Classic was held in Norco, California in prime conditions; it's widely held around the country that Woodbridge is THE fastest meet in the nation. The 3 mile course has absolutely no hills, and consists entirely of fast close-cropped grass and pavement. Additionally, the meet has the advantage of being held in Southern California, meaning the runners

enjoy the benefits of a cool 75-65°F. All of these factors combined to create an exhilarating race experience and a slew of personal records.

We took 38 boys to Woodbridge this year, with each competing in either the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Varsity B, or Sweepstakes race.

Kicking off the evening was the Freshman Boys race, where the team placed 11th against 31 other teams. The first five of the nine DVCC freshman were Martin Fuller (16:54.9) in 15th place, Christopher Broze (17:42.1) in 49th place, Vade Pierce (18:26.7) in 110th place, Justin Perillio (18:27.4) in 112th place, and Luke Nagli (18:36.2) in 125th place. These boys performed commendably against an enormous pack of almost 400 of the country’s up-and-coming runners.

In the Sophomore Boys race, our talented boys placed a solid 3rd place against the deep squads of Great Oak and Saugus High Schools. Heading this Sophomore race for DV was Noah Werebelow (16:46.5) in 18th place, followed by Mays Jones just a split second behind (16:46.7) in 19th place, Nicolo Perciballi (16:56.7) in 35th place, Vincent Larente (17:08.1) in 53rd place, Lucas Young (17:21.2) in 70th place, and Adam Hansen (17:38.1) in 88th place.

Our Junior Boys placed 3rd in an incredibly tight competition to Great Oak’s 2nd place team; we finished with 99 points, just a mere 1 point behind Great Oak’s 98! This adept crew of juniors was lead by Neal Saxena (16:29.7) in 17th place, followed by Carter Sokolovich (16:31.5) in 18th place, Marshall Smith (16:44.8) in 24th place, Ceth Reeves (16:45.3) in 25th place, and David Syms (17:08.0) in 53rd place.

The Varsity B race saw our team of 7 runners come in a strong 4th place, with 141 points. This team was lead by an astounding breakthrough performance by sophomore Sammy Van Alstine, who won the hotly contested race with a blistering 14:45.7 time. This is easily the the record for the Sophomore 3 mile, and is one of the top five 3 mile times ever run by a Desert Vista athlete. Following behind Sammy was junior Lee Nasewytewa (15:18.6) in 7th place, junior Travis Kearney (15:37.8) in 20th place, Senior Michael Tuli (15:55.6) in 38th place, and senior Jack Willems (16:21.1) in 75th place. The top seven was rounded off with senior Grant Cuyler (16:38.7) in 94th place, and senior David Neighbors (17:01.7) in 112th place.

The evening was finished off with the Varsity making their season debut in the premier Sweepstakes race. The results of this race forebode a prodigious season for the Thunder, as we finished 2nd place against Great Oak, arguably THE BEST TEAM IN THE NATION. Finishing with 118 points to Great Oak’s 83, and only a 2 second difference between our average mile pace and theirs, we showed we have the guts and the fitness to compete with ANY other team in the nation. This was not only the best Woodbridge performance of any Desert Vista team, this was the best 3 mile performance of any team in the HISTORY of Arizona. This squad of all seniors was led off by Reece Donihi in a new school record of 14:28.7, which earned him a 12th place finish. He was followed by Aksel Laudon (14:35.9) in 22nd place, Habs Cheney (14:45.4) in 34th place, D’Angelo Piasecki (14:50.5) in 44th place, and Bryce Schmisseur (14:54.5) in 57th place. Behind these top five runners was Nick Thatcher (14:56.5) in 62nd place and J Iannone (15:40.5) in 133rd place.

Overall, the trip to Woodbridge was a great success and a show of the dedication and depth of our team. This night of extraordinary achievements from all our runners is only a precursor of the unreached potential of the Desert Vista Thunder.

A resounding show of gratitude is owed to DVCC Boosters, who generously provided for much of this trip’s expenses. Thanks to the dedicated Coaches for all their time and effort in mentoring our team, and thank you to all the parents for your selfless support and commitment.

The next meet will be the Doug Conley Invitational at Shalimar Club on September 23rd.

GO THUNDER!!

Girls Cross Country The DVCC Girls team, led by captains Julia Bucci, Kiki Donnelly, Keilani Fang, Haley Wolf and Chloe Worthen, kicked off a great start to the 2017 season. The team is coached by Doug Christofis along with an awesome group of volunteer coaches who support, train and motivate the girls to showcase their talents and be the best they can be!

The girls travelled up the hill to their 1st meet on September 2nd for the Peaks Invitational in Flagstaff. They placed 5th in the JV/Open race and 6th in the Summit Race. The 2nd meet took place in Tucson on September 8th at the Desert Solstice Cross Country Festival. The squad turned an impressive performance and swept all three races: the FR/SO, the JR/SR and the top- billed Black/Silver nightcap.

On September 16 the DVCC girls showcased their talents at two meets. The Four Corners Invitational in Flagstaff was the site of the early morning meet. All girls put forth a fantastic effort! The JV squad took 5th place out of 16 teams led by these runners scoring for their team: Jess Condon (22:54), Dani Prasad (24:14), Zoe Sutherland (24:49), Sara Chapa (25:35) and Bailey Breen (26:26).

The rest of the team headed to the 4th meet of the season at the 37th Annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, a huge event that draws top teams from all of Southern California and the West Region. DVCC girls placed 6th out of 22 teams in the JV race with their scoring finishers: Julia Nelson (20:55), Hannah Garcia (21:30), Emma McCutchen (21:49), Megan Schneider (21:54) and Emma Janas (22:04). The DVCC Varsity B team finished in 10th place out of 19 teams with the top runners for their race: Quinn Boardman (18:55), Kyra Mazanec (19:31), Sydni Nedza (19:32), Eve Boardman (19:41) and Keilani Fang (19:42). The final race of the evening was the top-billed Sweepstakes Race where the top varsity girls took 8th place out of 21 teams led by Haley Wolf (16:12), Kelly Harris (16:57), Katy Clausen (17:23), Allison Estrada (18:14) and Laurel Froelich (18:16). Congrats to all the girls - awesome job!

The next two races are the Doug Conley Invitational on Saturday, September 23 in Tempe and the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival in Casa Grande on Friday, September 29.

GO DVCC GIRLS!!

Boys Golf On September 12th, DV Boys Golf posted their 2nd under-par iWr team score of (-1.196) at Dobson Ranch. (iWr is calculated by taking the team score and adjusting it to the difficulty of the course. Our previous under-par iWr came on 8/29 at the Raven with a (-.054).) Davis Evans was the medalist posting a (-4) with Scott Schlader also shooting a (-3).

Davis Evans led the field on September 14th with a (-2) and earned medalist honors. Anthony Arnold played his best competitive match of his high school career and posted the Thunder's 2nd best score.

They competed in the Chaparral Invitational on September 16th & 17th at the beautiful Gainey Ranch. Scott Schlader posted a top-10 individual finish with a 36-hole score of (Even) par. This included a round 2 score of (-2). Sameer Bissessur shot his career-low on round 2 of the tournament posting a 76.

On September 19th, they competed in a 9-hole match at The Foothills Golf Club and tied Mountain View (Mesa) in overall team score. Senior Davis Evans was the overall medalist of the match shooting a (-1) 35 to lead the pack.

The Thunder have off the next 2 weeks before competing in a 9-hole match on October 3rd, and then head to Flagstaff for a large 30-team, 36-hole tournament where DV is the defending champion.

Great job, gentlemen!!

JV Football

Congratulations to the JV Football Team as they defeated Dobson last night 32-8! The offense led the way with touchdowns from Elijah Roman, Elijah Ervin and Mike Busby. The offense continues to improve each game and it is showing on the scoreboard. This was a total team effort. Many players helped out by stepping in when others where hurt. Defensively, the team held a pesky Dobson offense with 3 big defensive stands.

Last week, the JV football team defeated Brophy 17-3. The defense played lights out and held a strong Brophy offense to 3 points. The offense got off to a good start and piled up chunks of yardage through the air. The offense gained some confidence with strong play from Elijah Roman, Elijah Ervin and James Crowl who led the way with 7 catches, a pick and several good runs. Way to go boys!!

Off Campus Parking – Vista Canyon Park and Lakewood The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation has requested DVHS students not park in the small lot at Vista Canyon Park (aka DV Park) at 16020 South 30th Street during school hours due to concerns by residents there are no available parking spaces.

Students who park in the Lakewood neighborhood east of Desert Vista on 33rd Street north of Liberty Lane (near the community pool) are requested to leave enough space for the trash and recycle garbage cans to be put out on Tuesdays, per the HOA Property Manager. Also, you need to be considerate of the home owners and not block their driveways, parking a fair distance away from homes. We ask students to be respectful at all times by word and action. We thank you in advance for assisting us in continuing to be respectful of our DVHS neighbors, their property and public access to the park. Please continue to follow all traffic laws, driving responsibly, and not leaving any trash behind to help keep our community clean and safe.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up Student drop off/pick up is coordinated at the student parking lot located off of Frye Road. We ask that you please allow plenty of time for this process as well as being extremely careful and cautious during drop off and pick up. We encourage early arrival so our students can frequent the library, get assistance from their teachers and/or attend our peer-to-peer tutoring program.

Skateboards and Bicycle Racks We have skateboard and bicycle racks for students to secure their bikes or skateboards. We ask that you have your child utilize this area and not lock their bike to fences and/or carry their skateboard around during school hours. We are not able to allow this for safety reasons. Please assist us by providing your child with a lock. We appreciate your assistance as we support their mode of transportation, but need to adhere to the lock up and safety procedures.

No Hoverboards on Campus The use of hoverboards - two-wheeled, self-balancing electric scooters – has recently risen in popularity. Unfortunately, there are hazards associated with these devices, including fires, property damage, and injuries to riders and pedestrians. With student and staff safety in mind, hoverboards may not be used, stored or charged on our campus.

○ Instead of forcing yourself to finish an assignment in one day, take time to work on it a little bit at a time.

● Set aside time for studying.

○ Create plan including specific times to be spent for each subject.

○ Set a timer, turn off your phone, and focus in an environment with no distractions.

○ It is better to study for short periods of time over a couple of days, than to cram the night before.

● Take a break to relax after school for an hour or so, then do homework.

○ Do not wait until 10:00 at night to begin homework.

● Develop a plan that works best for your needs.

○ If you have sports practice and games during the school week, start homework early in the week to get ahead. The importance of a Planner ❏ It is portable and always handy, so it is easy to remember and use.

❏ It is an efficient way to keep track of engagements, classes and responsibilities.

❏ Having one for only school, or a planner that covers your entire week both have merits.

❏ School only planners allow you to really focus on your classes and school events. Also you won’t get sidetracked. But they do result in a little bit of tunnel vision as they don’t take into account your life outside of school.

❏ Planners for both extracurriculars and school make it easy to balance all important things in your life and allow you to schedule responsibilities based off of tests, school work and clubs, but they aren’t solely dedicated to school which can be overwhelming and fail to emphasize the importance of school things.

❏ No matter which option you prefer, the main idea is GET A PLANNER AND USE IT!

❏ Tips for Everyday Use:

❏ Update it daily/weekly

❏ As soon as you hear about an important assignment or test/quiz coming up, write in in your planner. Organizing School Work ● Organizational system ideas ○ Binder ○ Accordion folder ○ Individual folders for each class ● Separate tabs, sections, etc. based on class. ● Do not let loose papers pile up in your backpack. ● Get rid of old, unnecessary work every so often. ○ (quarter, semester, etc.) ○ Before getting rid of anything, check StudentVue to make sure it is entered in the gradebook correctly. ○ MAKE SURE IT IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WILL NEED LATER! ● Save study guides and old tests/quizzes. (this will be helpful and save time during finals!) ● Have a designated spot at home for storing textbooks. ● Label each notebook/folder, and if one is about to fill up, have a new one handy Questions?

Every question is a good question.
