Welcome to our ‘20-Year Strong’ 2015-2016 school year! We will be celebrating our 20 year anniversary this fall and invite you all to join us in our celebration of many successes! You will find more information within this newsletter and listed on our website.

We normally share our performance on state assessment tests (AIMS) in relation to schools across the state each year during the fall. As many of you may recall, SB1191 was signed into law on Friday, February 20, 2015, which immediately ended the AIMS high school graduation requirements. NEW PROCEDURE FOR E LEVATOR USE

Desert Vista has a new procedure to obtain an electronic elevator card for those students who are on crutches or a wheelchair. Students needing to obtain a cardkey will do the following: Obtain an elevator permission form by seeing the school nurse prior to your school day begin- ning or by going to our desertvista.schoolfusion.us website, click on “STUDENTS” at the top of the page, then scroll down to “NURSE”. When you get to the nurse website, click on the ELEVATOR FORM, print it, complete the form with both parent & student signatures and bring it with you to the nurse. Submit your doctor/trainer order information, with an estimated time of need for the use of the elevator, to the nurse to support your need. Nurse will provide note to leave class few minutes early to get through halls, as well as col- lect elevator form. Elevator card will be obtained from the book store, as a $25 lien will be placed on the stu- dent’s account until the elevator card is returned. Because the elevator card is now electronic, it will be deactivated on the completion date listed on student’s form. Should a student foresee needing an extension of time for his/her elevator card, a student will provide that documentation to the school nurse prior to the deactivation date listed on his/her original paperwork. Thank you in advance for your cooperation & help keeping our students safe! Page 3 Volume 22, Issue 1

STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK -UP

Our Security Staff has become concerned that procedures for picking up students are often being disre- garded in the student parking lot at the end of the day. Security is looking out for the safety of your children, and over the years has created a system for parents to pick up their student in an efficient manner. It is not the perfect solution; however, the SAFETY of the children comes first! Trying to circum- vent the system and avoiding Security directing traffic may result in an unfortunate accident. We want to be proactive in preventing any such mishaps. We ask for your patience and respect for our Security Staff as they are there for the safety of your children. Timing is everything, if you’re coming before or when the bell rings at the end of the school day, you can expect delays. If you arrive 10 - 15 minutes later your experience will be vastly different and move much quicker. From the time the bell rings at 3:12 PM until approximately 3:30 PM when the lot is almost empty is 16 minutes. Staggering your pickup time will reduce everyone’s stress and risk of mishaps.

NO PICK UP IN BUS TURNAROUND.

Once the account has been activated, you will have access to the following information: Messages from specific teachers Calendar of scheduled classroom events/due dates for assignments Attendance showing tardies, excused, school-related, and unexcused absences Course History showing grades and credits earned. This information is cumulative from the be- ginning of the student’s enrollment. Also included in this tab is a link called “Graduation Status”. This shows all of the courses required to graduate along with a summary of credits required, earned, and in progress, along with AIMS test scores (if applicable). Grade Book shows current progress and/or grade reports Health which shows student’s immunizations Report Card that is enabled during a specific quarter/semester grading period. Desert Vista has implemented an automated calling system. If your child is marked absent in one or more classes, you will receive an automated phone call. If your child was absent, please call the appropriate atten- dance line option. If you think your child was marked absent in error, please have the student check with his/ her teacher the following day.

Please emphasize good hygiene. This means teaching them to cough/sneeze into their elbows, good hand washing habits and keeping their hands away from their faces.

T RANSCRIPT R EQUESTS /RECORDS Official and Unofficial Transcript Requests Students and parents can order transcripts through Parchment.com (www.parchment.com). Parch- ment is a bit particular in regards to how data is matched up to the transcript we upload to them and how you fill out your registration form. Make sure your birth date is correct. The graduation date reflects the correct year (i.e. graduation year 2016). Create ONE account only. Here are the steps to create an account with Parchment: Go to Parchment.com & select the “Sign Up” link on the homepage. Pick Parent or Student and complete the registration page. Once registered, select “My Transcripts”. On the next step, leave the box “Parchment Registration Code” blank. Instead, use your mouse to sign your signature and mark/fill all other fields below appropriately to complete your registration. Parchment.com does NOT send SAT/ACT scores. If you need an official copy of these scores sent to your college/university, please visit collegeboard.org for SAT scores or act.org for ACT scores. Fees will apply. If you should need assistance, or if your transcript does not get sent to the college, university, etc., please contact Parchment support through their portal or at 888.662.0874. They will be able to quickly assess the problem and assist in what needs to be done to correct it.

LIBRARY /MEDIA CENTER

The Library will be open at 7:15 AM each day and close on regular school days at 4 pm.

The facility will close shortly after the final bell on early release days.

Usage during school hours will require a teacher-signed pass. No food or drink (with the exception of water) is allowed in the Library or the computer labs. The Library will be open during lunch time for students who need to work on school-related projects and assignments. Any other activities such as playing games or socializing must take place in other designated areas on campus that remain open during lunch time. We will continue to adhere to the fire code capacity, and as such, students will be advised that if they are not doing school-related work and/or we are at or nearly over capacity, they will be asked to leave the Library to make room for students who are waiting to enter to do school work. We thank everyone for their continued support and understanding.

Please contact Ms. Tomika Bethea if there are any questions about these policies.

E NGLISH D EPTARTMENT NOVEL CHECK -OUT PROCEDURES

The English Department has over 20,000 copies of novels that students at every grade level check out for reading and study during their novel units. English teachers bring their classes to the Library to check novels in and out, resulting in automatic tracking of late or lost books, making the whole process easier on the teachers! Students must return their previously-used novels in order to get the next one. Please help your students remember to turn in their completed novels so they can obtain the next one without delay. Additionally, lost books must be paid for in the Bookstore before another may be checked out. Desert Vista Storm Report Page 17

Freshman Football Featured on Channel 12

This year the Desert Vista Freshman football team ended their summer conditioning sessions with a different empha- sis on flexibility and core strength. DV’s own Amanda Goe stepped in and ran the team through 60 minutes of hot yoga. Hot yoga because it was 101 degrees outside. The team is large enough so that the yoga practice had to be ran on the field. The team Loved it. Cameron Cox KPNX Channel 12 heard about the unique way to end camp and came out to video and feature the team on the news. Cameron a sports anchor at Channel 12 and a former college football player even emphasized the importance of hip flexibility to the team. Ms. Goe states that yoga practice pro- vides benefits to athletes in a number of way. Some of these include the use of lung space, or movement with breath and stilling the mind for focused performance. Ms. Goe teaches at DV and currently has four classes of Yoga 1 & 2 and one advanced class. Coach O’Keefe is hoping to bring her back late in the season to help stretch out the kinks.
