STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP

Our Security Staff has become concerned that procedures for picking up students are often being disre- garded in the student parking lot at the end of the day. Security is looking out for the safety of your children, and over the years has created a system for parents to pick up their student in an efficient manner. It is not the perfect solution; however, the SAFETY of the children comes first! Trying to circum- vent the system and avoiding Security directing traffic may result in an unfortunate accident. We want to be proactive in preventing any such mishaps. We ask for your patience and respect for our Security Staff as they are there for the safety of your children. Timing is everything, if you’re coming before or when the bell rings at the end of the school day, you can expect delays. If you arrive 10 - 15 minutes later your experience will be vastly different and move much quicker. From the time the bell rings at 3:12 PM until approximately 3:30 PM when the lot is almost empty is 16 minutes. Staggering your pickup time will reduce everyone’s stress and risk of mishaps.

NO PICK UP IN BUS TURNAROUND.

F IGHTING OFF GERMS!

Fall & winter are the seasons when many flu & cold viruses tend to come alive! There are several things we are doing here at school to prevent illness-encouraging your student to develop good habits will help promote their health for a lifetime.

Wash your hands with soap & water, lots of friction, for 15 seconds

School equipment & surfaces are cleaned with the ammonia solution allowed Getting a good night sleep every night Wash your hands OFTEN! Eat a healthy diet (especially breakfast) with fruits & vegetables of all colors Stay home from school/work if you have a fever of 101.0  Be sure to wash your hands with soap & water!  Avoid being around people who are sick  Hand Sanitizers are not as effective as soap & water  Don’t forget to wash your hands!  Get a flu shot!  Cover your mouth & nose when you cough, with your elbow/sleeve/tissue  And did I mention, Wash your hands A LOT? You can always find more tips at www.cdc.gov

N OTES FROM THE NURSE

As we approach the cooler months of flu season-remember that the seasonal flu and H1N1 vaccines are available at many local pharmacies, so you can immunize before it gets you and your family down.

Also, it is important that you remember that you SHOULD NOT send your child to school with temperature of 100.0 or higher. Keep your kids home when they are sick.

Please emphasize good hygiene. This means teaching them to cough/sneeze into their el- bows, good hand washing habits and keeping their hands away from their faces.

The school has hand sanitizer placed in many locations around the campus. If you would like to donate bottles of sanitizer (or boxes of tissues) for the school’s common areas or class- rooms, please send them in to school with your students.

We are grateful for all you do to help us keep Desert Vista a healthy campus!

If you have any questions please contact our school nurse, Jean Kennedy. Page 14

NEW PROCEDURE FOR ELEVATOR USE

Desert Vista has a new procedure to obtain an electronic elevator card for those students who are on crutches or a wheelchair. Students needing to obtain a cardkey will do the following:  Obtain an elevator permission form by seeing the school nurse prior to your school day beginning or by going to our desertvista.schoolfusion.us website, click on “STUDENTS” at the top of the page, then scroll down to “NURSE”. When you get to the nurse website, click on the ELEVATOR FORM, print it, complete the form with both parent & student signatures and bring it with you to the nurse.  Submit your doctor/trainer order information, with an estimated time of need for the use of the elevator, to the nurse to support your need.  Nurse will provide note to leave class few minutes early to get through halls, as well as collect elevator form.  Elevator card will be obtained from the book store, as a $25 lien will be placed on the student’s account until the elevator card is returned.  Because the elevator card is now electronic, it will be deactivated on the completion date listed on student’s form.  Should a student foresee needing an extension of time for his/her elevator card, a student will provide that documentation to the school nurse prior to the deactivation date listed on his/her original paperwork. Thank you in advance for your cooperation & help keeping our students safe!

MORE NURSE NOTES….

Parents, as you check your child’s immunizations in parentvue, please note that the synergy pro- gram shows a pink highlight on any immunization that is delinquent. However, the program is cur- rently NOT able to communicate between the Dtap/DPT/DT line and the Tdap line, nor the varicella line and the varicella +13 line. So, if you notice either area pink highlighted, before calling your doctor or taking your student in for unnecessary immunizations, please check the listed immuniza- tions in both lines.

If the date listed on the Tdap line is within the past 10 years, but the pink highlight is present on the Dtap/DPT/DT line & the Tdap is NOT listed on that line, your student is up to date. If your student has one or 2 dates listed on the varicella line, both dates past the age of one year and the varicella +13 line is highlighted, your student is up to date. If your student has had the varicella disease ( chicken pox) and either the varicella or the vari- cella +13 line is highlighted, your student is up to date & has the strongest immunity pos- sible to varicella.

I hope this clears up some of the immunization confusion on synergy- I so appreciate all the proac- tive parents we have in our community. Please feel free to contact the school nurse if you have questions. Jean Kennedy, R.N. 480-706.7936/[email protected]

The health office is in extreme need of donations for any feminine products, pads or tampons. We have been fortunate to receive corporate donations in the past, but supply is nearly out. You can drop items off at the health office or the front office.

THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!

A Good Ending! When you’ve had a rough day with your teen, attempt a rebound before bed. End the day on a peaceful note by letting him/her know you love them and will start fresh tomorrow! Your teen will appreciate the support-----and learn a valuable lesson about letting go of stress by not holding grudges!

W ATER BOTTLE REFILL STATIONS A VAILABLE ON CAMPUS

Three water stations are available on campus for use in refilling water bottles. One is in the gym lob- by, one is in front of the nurse’s office and there is one in the cafeteria. Remember, students can bring water into our campus buildings. Fountain drinks, power drinks, coffee and anything other than water are not allowed in the hallways, classrooms or library. While we want to be certain our students increase their environmental sensitivity and remain hydrated, we also want to continue to be consci- entious of the upkeep of our school. REMEMBER: NO LATEX BALLOONS ON CAMPUS

Nurse Jean Kennedy wants to remind everyone that latex balloons are not permitted on our campus. We have a number of students who are severely allergic to not only the latex but to the powder that is inside both balloons and latex gloves. If latex balloons are brought onto the campus they must be popped outside after being placed inside a plastic bag, in order to contain the powder. Please help us avoid this potentially harmful situation by keeping latex balloons at home.

Dear Parents of 2016 DVHS Graduates, Graduation is upon us! One of the annual activities that makes high school graduation night an even more memorable, safe and entertaining event for our seniors is Grad Night. What is Grad Night? It is an all-night celebration which begins immediately following commencement when buses transport graduates to a safe and fun location for the all-night celebration. This year, the event will be held at UltraStar- Multi-tainment Center @ Ak-Chin Circle, in Maricopa. There will be: • Great prizes • All Night DJ • Dancing • Magician • Hypnotist • Casino • Cosmic Bowling • Laser Tag • Lots of food….and more! Who puts it all together? Volunteers serve on the Grad Night Committee, which is part of the Thunder Board, a 501 (c)3 organization. That means all contributions are deductible and that everything to make the night a success de- pends completely on donated time and resources. Why? Grad Night provides a safe and fun alternative to spend one more night with their classmates and friends. What does it cost to attend? Tickets are $100 per person prior to the New Year. Prices will increase after January 1st. Ticket sales will begin Monday, November9. The committee will be on campus the entire week of Nov. 9-13 for your convenience. If you are unable to purchase at that time, you are welcome to download registration and either drop it off to Nancy Kapler in the front office or mail it to the address listed below. Please make checks payable to DV Grad Night Boosters. Desert Vista High School Attn: Grad Night 2016 16440 S. 32nd St. Phoenix, AZ 85048 Page 23
