The M25 Motorway (Junctions 19, 22 and 23) and the A40
THE M25 MOTORWAY (JUNCTIONS 19, 22 AND 23) AND THE A40 TRUNK ROAD (DENHAM ROUNDABOUT) TEMPORARY OVERNIGHT LINK/SLIP ROAD CLOSURES Notice is hereby given that Highways England Company Limited(a) intends to make an Order on the M25 Motorway and the A40 Trunk Road, in the Counties of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, under section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road. The effect of the Order would be to authorise the overnight closure of the following: (a) the link roads leading to and from the M25 at Junction 19 (A41/A411); (b)the slip road leading to the clockwise carriageway of the M25 at Junction 22 (A1081); (c) the slip roads leading from the clockwise carriageway and to the anti-clockwise carriageway of the M25 at Junction 23 (A1/A1(M) Junction 1); (d)the slip road leading from the westbound carriageway of the A40 to Denham roundabout (A4020/A412) at M40 Junction 1. These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake cyclic maintenance and/or urgent repair work. It is expected that the work would take place for approximately 1 - 2 nights for each closure every 2 months between 22:00 and 05:30 on Monday – Thursday nights, 23:00 and 06:00 on Friday nights, 22:00 and 06:00 on Saturday nights and 22:30 and 05:30 on Sunday nights. The Order would come into force on 16 April 2017 and have a maximum duration of twelve months. -

‘Food Miles’: Britain’s Transition from Rail to Road-based Food Distribution, 1919-1975 Thomas James Spain MA Doctor of Philosophy University of York Railway Studies September 2016 Abstract Britain’s railways were essential for the development of the British economy throughout the nineteenth century; however, by 1919 their seemingly unassailable position as goods carriers was about to be eroded by the lorry. The railway strike of September 1919 had presented traders with an opportunity to observe the capabilities of road haulage, but there is no study which focuses on the process of modal shift in goods distribution from the trader’s perspective. This thesis therefore marks an important departure from the existing literature by placing goods transport into its working context. The importance of food as an everyday essential commodity adds a further dimension to the status of goods transport within Britain’s supply chain, particularly when the fragility of food products means that minimising the impact of distance, time and spoilage before consumption is vital in ensuring effective and practical logistical solutions. These are considered in a series of four case studies on specific food commodities and retail distribution, which also hypothesise that the modal shift from rail to road reflected the changing character of transport demand between 1919 and 1975. Consequently, this thesis explores the notion that the centre of governance over the supply chain transferred between food producers, manufacturers, government and chain retailer, thereby driving changes in transport technology and practice. This thesis uses archival material to provide a qualitative study into the food industry’s relationship with transport where the case studies incorporate supply chain analyses to permit an exploration of how changes in structure might have influenced the modal shift from rail to road distribution. -

Stoop Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands Abstract The high-speed railway Amsterdam (The Netherlands)–Antwerp (Belgium) is nearly completed. As part of a TEN-T priority project it will connect to major metropolitan areas in Northwest Europe. In many (European) countries, high-speed railways have been built. So, at first sight, the development of this particular high-speed railway should be relatively straightforward. But the situation seems to be more complicated. To run international services full interoperability is required. However, there turned out to be compatibility problems that are mainly caused by the way decision making has taken place, in particular with respect to the choice and implementation of ERTMS, the new European railway signalling system. In this paper major technical and institutional choices, as well as the choice of system borders that have all been made by decision makers involved in the development of the high-speed railway Amsterdam–Antwerp, will be analyzed. This will make it possible to draw some lessons that might be used for future railway projects in Europe and other parts of the world. In the selected localities, there are two morphological ways of constructing this type of sentence: using the morphological marker al before the verb (or between the verb and the auxiliary) or not using it. First, we identify the phonological patterns that exist in these localities. Then, we analyse intergenerational variation, according to the five different phonological patterns found. Finally, we study the geo-prosodic variation which exists between older and younger people from these localities.
