Abstract Faster bat speed allows a baseball or softball player more time to decide how to hit the ball and provides more transfer of momentum to the ball (Nathan, 2003; Syzmanski, DeRenne, Spaniol, 2009). Purpose: This paper examines the effectiveness of three training strategies for improving bat speed among high school baseball players. Methods: Nine high school students were recruited and separated into 3 groups using different training implements. A standard bat (29 oz.), a weighted bat (45 oz.), and Therabands attached to a standard bat were used over a 3-week training program. Data were analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. Results: The standard bat group experienced no change in bat speed (± 0.89), while the weighted bat group increased by 1.9 ± 0.46 mph and the Theraband group improved by 3.1 ± 0.38 mph. The only significant difference was in the change in bat speed between the Theraband group and the standard bat group (p = .022). All other data were non-significant. Conclusions: Attaching Therabands to a standard bat may be an effective training tool to improve bat speed. Keywords: bat speed, standard bat, theraband, weighted bat, training implements 1. -
Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Meeting
Osage City Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Meeting January 18, 2006 6:30PM -- City Council Chambers Board Members Present: Dale Schwieger, John Garland, Mark Goehring, and Jeff Crocker, and Pat Bean. Staff Present: Corey Linton, Recreation Director Members Absent: Pat Lawless and Kevin Swindale The meeting was called to order at 6:30PM. A motion to approve the agenda was made by Jeff Crocker and seconded by Pat Bean. The motion passed. A motion to approve the minutes from November 17 was made by Jeff Crocker and seconded by Pat Bean. The motion passed. The recreation director gave an update to the park board about the current Winter OCPR programs. 3rd-6th grade youth basketball began its regular season on January 14. All games were played with any problems. There are currently seven (7) total teams from Osage City, two 3rd-4th grade girls, two 3rd/4th grade boys, two 5th/6th grade boys, and one 5th/6th grade girls team. Osage City participates in the Scott Brown Youth Basketball League with Council Grove, Americus, and North Lyon County. 1st-2nd grade instructional basketball began on Monday, January 16. There are currently 24 children enrolled in the program. 16-1st graders, 8-2nd graders, which 15-girls and 9-boys. There are four teams total, which will practice the next two weeks, and then will play three total games. Adult Winter Volleyball began on Sunday, January 15. There are five (5) women’s teams, and three (3) coed teams. Games are played on Sundays at the Osage City Grade School Gym. -

CLUB PRESIDENT MARY PREECE Last year we did well winning the 2nd XI and 4th XI competitions as well as getting WCC PRESIDENT BARRY DENNIS to the National 20/20 Finals in Derby. We have the talent within the club to go further this year and it is time we won the 1st XI title again. Availability is a key HEAD OF SENIOR SIMON ROBINS factor throughout the sides so please focus on this during the coming months. CRICKET I am pleased to welcome our new Director of Cricket, Jonathan Speller. He has HON TREASURER CRISPIN LYDEN-COWAN settled in well and is getting to know everyone – I know we will all give him our full support. We also welcome back Simon Robins (Robbo) as our Chairman, best HON SECRETARY JAMIE ANDREWS known as the most successful Chairman the Club has ever had. I am sure he will DIRECTOR JONATHAN SPELLER be looking to add more successes to our club achievements! The rest of the “back OF CRICKET room” team is the same and we have kept fully fit during the winter months and we look forward to supporting all the sides as the season unfolds. -

Dr. Udo Fries and Prof. Dr. Daniel Schreier Zurich, 2019 Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the linguistic features of spoken English sports commentating. Sports commentary is a combination of narration and entertainment, and an easily recognisable form of communicating information to a mass audience. By examining a corpus of 160,000 words transcribed from live cricket, football, horse racing and tennis commentaries broadcast on UK television and radio, a quantitative and qualitative study is carried out for the purpose of determining the effects of three factors on the language produced by sports commentators: the nature of the sport, the nature of the broadcast medium and developments over time, defined by the interval between two sets of recordings (1996–2002 and 2013–2015). -

Games Try to play your games in a sequence that flows with the group and brings them down to quiet and calm before the end of the session. Do think through what you want to achieve by the end of the session and the games that will actually work to this effect. Start with some name games and then some other brief activities that will serve to introduce participants to one another. Try to avoid cliques developing, use "mix up" games like ‘the sun shines on’ to move people around the room and make new relationships in the group. "Go rounds" - in which the whole group is invited in turn to contribute verbally, "the worst bit about my journey here was...", "the best thing about the weekend so far is..." - are a useful stepping stone to Creative Listening. Take care with more physical games, don't ask players to do things you wouldn't, and respect everybody's private space; don't force players into being physically intimate unless it is clearly appropriate and they can handle it. Think quite carefully of your group - are you going to make someone feel isolated in any way? 1 Name Games Circle introductions In a circle, first person introduces him/herself. "My name is `A'". A second person introduces him/herself and first person, "I am `B', this is `A'". A third person says "I'm `C', this is `A' and `B'", and so on around the circle until the last person introduces everyone all the way round. Change places Standing in a circle, or better still sitting on chairs, each person states their name in turn. -
