The Surface Energy Balance in a Cold-Arid Permafrost Environment

While the information on the permafrost characteristics and its extent started emerging, the governing energy regimes of this cryosphere region is of particular interest. This paper present the results of Surface Energy Balance (SEB) studies carried out in the upper 5 Ganglass catchment in the Ladakh region of India, which feed directly to the River Indus. The point SEB is estimated using the one-dimensional mode of GEOtop model from 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2017 at 4727 m a.s.l elevation. The model is evaluated using field monitored radiation components, snow depth variations and one-year near-surface ground temperatures and showed good agreement with the respective simulated values. The study site has an air 10 temperature range of – 23.7 to 18.1 °C with a mean annual average temperature (MAAT) of - 2.5 and ground surface temperature range of -9.8 to 19.1 °C. For the study period, the surface energy balance characteristics of the cold-arid site show that the net radiation was the major component with mean value of 28.9 W m-2, followed by sensible heat flux (13.5 W m-2) and latent heat flux (12.8 W m-2), and the ground heat flux was equal to 0.4 W m-2. -

Situation Analysis OSOCC Nepal Earthquake Assessment Cell 05.05.2015 SITUATION OVERVIEW The earthquake from 25 April (7.8 magnitude) was followed by a series of aftershocks up to a magnitude of 6.7, mostly to the east of the original epicentre causing further localised damage. As of 4 May, 7,365 people have been killed and more than 14,300 injured. 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts have been affected. Access to remote areas remains a challenge. Initial reports were that up to 90 per cent of the houses in Gorkha and Sindhupalchok districts have been destroyed. UNDAC has established humanitarian hubs in Gorkha and Sindhupalchok. Most affected districts (4 May 2015) Based on estimates of damaged buildings. Analysis using data from: Multi-National Military and Coordination Centre, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Population Census (2011) Priorities for humanitarian intervention (based on consolidated secondary data): Shelter: tarpaulins, tents, blankets, repair tools and other NFIs Food delivery WASH: water supply, sanitation Health: facilities, medicine Access to remote areas Ensuring equitable distribution of relief items Rubble removal CRISIS IMPACT According to the government, the worst affected districts are Bhaktapur, Dhading, Dolakha, Gorkha, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Lamjung, Rasuwa, Ramechhap, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchok, Makawanpur, and Sindhuli (LCT 02/05/2015). Currently available information indicates that Sindhupalchok, Gorkha and Dhading are the priority districts for assistance. Although Rasuwa has a relatively small population, it is difficult to access and current information indiactesover 80% of the population are affected. While the relief effort is now reaching beyond Kathmandu, access to remote areas remains a key challenge (LCT 02/05/2015). -

Ling Ding AR 494: Senior Thesis Professor Weitz 9/25/17 Research Proposal Research Question and Hypothesis: The main goal of this research paper is to analyze the historical and stylistic significance of the Buddhist wall paintings from Tholing Monastery in Ngari, Tibet, in the context from the first golden age of Western Himalayan culture to the heyday of Guge art from around 11th to 16th century. I will work specifically on “Portraits of Atisha and Te Shes’od” from the White Temple of Tholing Monastery, and talk about 1) how the subject matter of this painting represents the historical significance of Tholing Monastery, as the origination and religious center for Buddhism revival in 11th century in Western Tibet? 2) how does the artistic style of this painting represent a continuity of international style of Guge in previous period under strong Indian-Kashmir influence, at the same time preserved certain Western Tibetan idioms can be easily identified.1 1 Michael Henss, “Wall Paintings in Western Tibet: the Art of the Ancient Kingdom of Guge, 1000-1500”, Marg 48, no.I (1996): P35. Statement of Significance: A comprehensive investigation on Guge on its architectural sites, historical relics, religious significance, pilgrimage activities and local environment have already been taken, but more focused on the documentation of the buildings, artefacts, plans, inscriptions, photographs, and varies data. This paper will focus more on an analysis of subject matter, iconographical and art historical problems of the wall-paintings of Guge, specifically on a wall-paintings from around 15th century. Iconographic analysis will be done in comparison with paintings from the earlier period (around 11th century) in Guge area, as well as from mainland Tibetan area from the same time (around 15th century). -

According to media and informant reports, untold thousands of Uyghurs and other Muslims have been and are being detained in clandestine political re-education facilities, with major implications for society, local economies and ethnic relations. Considering that the Chinese state is currently denying the very existence of these facilities, this paper investigates publicly available evidence from official sources, including government websites, media reports and other Chinese internet sources. First, it briefly charts the history and present context of political re-education. Second, it looks at the recent evolution of re-education in Xinjiang in the context of ‘de-extremification’ work. Finally, it evaluates detailed empirical evidence pertaining to the present re-education drive. With Xinjiang as the ‘core hub’ of the Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing appears determined to pursue a definitive solution to the Uyghur question. Since summer 2017, troubling reports emerged about large-scale internments of Muslims (Uyghurs, Kazakhs and Kyrgyz) in China's northwest Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). By the end of the year, reports emerged that some ethnic minority townships had detained up to 10 percent of the entire population, and that in the Uyghur-dominated Kashgar Prefecture alone, numbers of interned persons had reached 120,000 (The Guardian, January 25, 2018). -

In recent years, human rights conditions in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have deteriorated, while bilateral tensions related to trade Michael A. Weber and security have increased, possibly creating both constraints and opportunities for U.S. policy Analyst in Foreign Affairs on human rights. After consolidating power in 2013, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary and State President Xi Jinping intensified and expanded the reassertion of party control over society that began toward the end of the term of his predecessor, Hu Jintao. Since 2017, the government has enacted new laws that place further restrictions on civil society in the name of national security, authorize greater controls over minority and religious groups, and further constrain the freedoms of PRC citizens. Government methods of social and political control are evolving to include the widespread use of sophisticated surveillance and big data technologies. Arrests of human rights advocates and lawyers intensified in 2015, followed by party efforts to instill ideological conformity across various spheres of society. In 2016, President Xi launched a policy known as “Sinicization,” under which the government has taken additional measures to compel China’s religious practitioners and ethnic minorities to conform to Han Chinese culture, support China’s socialist system as defined by the Communist Party, abide by Communist Party policies, and reduce ethnic differences and foreign influences. -
2019 International Religious Freedom Report
CHINA (INCLUDES TIBET, XINJIANG, HONG KONG, AND MACAU) 2019 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary Reports on Hong Kong, Macau, Tibet, and Xinjiang are appended at the end of this report. The constitution, which cites the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and the guidance of Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, states that citizens have freedom of religious belief but limits protections for religious practice to “normal religious activities” and does not define “normal.” Despite Chairman Xi Jinping’s decree that all members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) must be “unyielding Marxist atheists,” the government continued to exercise control over religion and restrict the activities and personal freedom of religious adherents that it perceived as threatening state or CCP interests, according to religious groups, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international media reports. The government recognizes five official religions – Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Protestantism, and Catholicism. Only religious groups belonging to the five state- sanctioned “patriotic religious associations” representing these religions are permitted to register with the government and officially permitted to hold worship services. There continued to be reports of deaths in custody and that the government tortured, physically abused, arrested, detained, sentenced to prison, subjected to forced indoctrination in CCP ideology, or harassed adherents of both registered and unregistered religious groups for activities related to their religious beliefs and practices. There were several reports of individuals committing suicide in detention, or, according to sources, as a result of being threatened and surveilled. In December Pastor Wang Yi was tried in secret and sentenced to nine years in prison by a court in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in connection to his peaceful advocacy for religious freedom. -
