Issue 98: Christianity in China As for Me and My House The house-church movement survived persecution and created a surge of Christian growth across China. Tony Lambert On the eve of the Communist victory in 1949, there were around one million Protestants (of all denominations) in China. In 2007, even the most conservative official polls reported 40 million, and these do not take into account the millions of secret Christians in the Communist Party and the government. What accounts for this astounding growth? Many observers point to the role of Chinese house churches. The house-church movement began in the pre-1949 missionary era. New converts—especially in evangelical missions like the China Inland Mission and the Christian & Missionary Alliance—would often meet in homes. Also, the rapidly growing independent churches, such as the True Jesus Church, the Little Flock, and the Jesus Family, stressed lay ministry and evangelism. The Little Flock had no pastors, relying on every "brother" to lead ministry, and attracted many educated city people and students who were dissatisfied with the traditional foreign missions and denominations. The Jesus Family practiced communal living and attracted the rural poor. These independent churches were uniquely placed to survive, and eventually flourish, in the new, strictly-controlled environment. In the early 1950s, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement eliminated denominations and created a stifling political control over the dwindling churches. Many believers quietly began to pull out of this system. -

House Church Demography According to the Bertelsmann Stiftung Transformation Index (BTI), which analyzes the quality of democracy and political management in 128 countries (Bertelsmann Stiftung n.d.), there are an estimated 80 million Christians in China, "many of whom congregate in illegal house churches" (ibid. 2014, 5). The Wall Street Journal reports that house church members could number between 30 and 60 million (29 July 2011). Voice of America (VOA) notes that the exact number of Christians is difficult to estimate because many worship at underground house churches (VOA 16 June 2014). The collapse of the Soviet Union opened new political perspectives for Kyrgyzstan and a chance to develop sovereign state based on democratic principles and values. Initially Kyrgyzstan attained some progress in building up a democratic state. However, in the second half of 1990s Kyrgyzstan shifted toward authoritarianism. Therefore, the full-scale transition to democracy has not been realized, and a well-functioning democracy has not been established. -

Tibetan culture has all along been a dazzling pearl in the treasure- house of Chinese culture as well as that of the world as a whole. The gradual merger of the Tubo culture of the Yalong Valley in the middle part of the basin of the Yarlung Zangbo River, and the ancient Shang-Shung culture of the western part of the Qinghai- Tibet Plateau formed the native Tibetan culture. -

LAW OF MONGOLIA ORGANIC FOOD LAW OF MONGOLIA 07 April, 2016 Ulaanbaatar city ORGANIC FOOD CHAPTER ONE General provisions Article 1 . Purpose 1.1. The purpose of this law is to regulate all aspects on organic agriculture, production of organic food, feed and fertilizer, their certification, trade, import, use of organic logo and advertisement. Article 2. The legislation on organic food 2.1. Legislation on organic food consists of the Constitution of Mongolia[l], Law on food[2], Law on food safety[3], Law on natural plants[4], Law on Forestry[5], Law on Standardization and Accreditation[6], Law on phytosani tary control of animal and plant originated products and raw materials at the border[7], and this law, and other legislative acts issued in conformity with all. 2.2. If an international treaty to which Mongolia is party states in different way, the provisions of international treaty shall prevail. Article 3. Scope 3.1. This law shall apply to agricultural originated organic food, unprocessed raw materials and products, natural plant originated organic food, organic feed, organic fertilizer and seed and seedlings. 3.2. This law shall not apply to produce food from raw materials of wild animals, and regulate activities of the public food. 17 Article 4. Definitions 4.1. The following terms, which used in this law shall be interpreted as follows: 4.1.1."organic food" is that given in 3.1.5 in Law on Food; 4.1.2."organic production" means to enterprise organic agricultural production of primary and food processing compliant with the requirements established in this Law; 4.1.3. -

In recent years, human rights conditions in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have deteriorated, while bilateral tensions related to trade Michael A. Weber and security have increased, possibly creating both constraints and opportunities for U.S. policy Analyst in Foreign Affairs on human rights. After consolidating power in 2013, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary and State President Xi Jinping intensified and expanded the reassertion of party control over society that began toward the end of the term of his predecessor, Hu Jintao. Since 2017, the government has enacted new laws that place further restrictions on civil society in the name of national security, authorize greater controls over minority and religious groups, and further constrain the freedoms of PRC citizens. Government methods of social and political control are evolving to include the widespread use of sophisticated surveillance and big data technologies. Arrests of human rights advocates and lawyers intensified in 2015, followed by party efforts to instill ideological conformity across various spheres of society. In 2016, President Xi launched a policy known as “Sinicization,” under which the government has taken additional measures to compel China’s religious practitioners and ethnic minorities to conform to Han Chinese culture, support China’s socialist system as defined by the Communist Party, abide by Communist Party policies, and reduce ethnic differences and foreign influences. -

The research has been conducted since 1997 by a team of political scientists from the University of Warsaw in cooperation with representatives of other Polish and foreign universities. Preliminary Remarks The idea ofpolitical science research on political changes in Central Asia was spawned at the Institute of Political Science of the University of Warsaw in the 1990s, in the conditions of growing interest in cooperation with the newly created post-Soviet states and a huge deficit of knowledge about the region in which a significant Polish diaspora lived. In 1997, an intercol- legiate research team was established, conducting, together with scientists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, research on changes taking place in the countries of the region (Deres, 2003). The team was organized on the initiative of Tadeusz Bodio, who was also the head of the international research programme. -
