In view of the global nature of the challenges posed by POPs, the Stockholm Convention on POPs was adopted at a Conference of Plenipotentiaries on 22 May, 2001 in Stockholm, Sweden. It entered into force in May, 2004 and Tanzania ratified it on 30 April, 2004. The objective of the Convention is to protect human health and the environment from adverse effects of persistent organic pollutants. The initial list of chemicals controlled under the Convention included 12 chemicals which were popularly referred to as the ‘dirty dozen’. However, during meetings of the Conference of the Parties in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015, additional 14 new chemicals were included in the list, making a total of 26 controlled chemicals as of now.
