  • Nazi-Confiscated Art Issues
Nazi-Confiscated Art Issues Dr. Jonathan Petropoulos PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, LOYOLA COLLEGE, MD UNITED STATES Art Looting during the Third Reich: An Overview with Recommendations for Further Research Plenary Session on Nazi-Confiscated Art Issues It is an honor to be here to speak to you today. In many respects it is the highpoint of the over fifteen years I have spent working on this issue of artworks looted by the Nazis. This is a vast topic, too much for any one book, or even any one person to cover. Put simply, the Nazis plundered so many objects over such a large geographical area that it requires a collaborative effort to reconstruct this history. The project of determining what was plundered and what subsequently happened to these objects must be a team effort. And in fact, this is the way the work has proceeded. Many scholars have added pieces to the puzzle, and we are just now starting to assemble a complete picture. In my work I have focused on the Nazi plundering agencies1; Lynn Nicholas and Michael Kurtz have worked on the restitution process2; Hector Feliciano concentrated on specific collections in Western Europe which were 1 Jonathan Petropoulos, Art as Politics in the Third Reich (Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press). Also, The Faustian Bargain: The Art World in Nazi Germany (New York/Oxford: Oxford University Press, forthcoming, 1999). 2 Lynn Nicholas, The Rape of Europa: The Fate of Europe's Treasures in the Third Reich and the Second World War (New York: Alfred Knopf, 1994); and Michael Kurtz, Nazi Contraband: American Policy on the Return of European Cultural Treasures (New York: Garland, 1985).

  • The Deceptive Art Deal of Van Beuningen
The deceptive art deal of Van Beuningen Koenigs Collection Wednesday begins the lawsuit by the heirs Koenigs at Museum Boijmans A case that shows the less attractive side of patron Van Beuningen. • Arjen Ribbens October 18, 2016 at 16:55 A great art collection often occurs at the expense of previous collectors. This is showed once again by the documents of the lawsuit that was filed Wednesday in Rotterdam against Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Six heirs of businessman Franz Koenigs demand the return of hundreds of Old Master drawings, which are given to the museum on loan in 1935. This loan was part of a previous, much larger loan which was partly donated to the museum? That is the question at the present proceedings. The history of the great loan - 46 paintings and 2,000 drawings - is worth telling. She makes clear to which behaviour an obsessive collector is capable of. The protagonist in this story is Daniel George van Beuningen (1877-1955), director of the Coal Trading Association (SHV) and one of the Rotterdam harbour barons who before the war ruled the city and its workers. It starts in April 1940 In April 1940, when the Nazis set Europe ablaze, Van Beuningen does an art purchase that will be central to the next trial. The Jewish owners of the Amsterdam banking Lisser and Rosenkranz want to flee to the United States. In all haste they try to liquidate their bank. Part of their property is the loaned art collection of Franz Koenigs to Museum Boijmans, which the businessman pawned to the bank after the stock market crash.

  • A Moral Persuasion: the Nazi-Looted Art Recoveries of the Max Stern Art Restitution Project, 2002-2013
A MORAL PERSUASION: THE NAZI-LOOTED ART RECOVERIES OF THE MAX STERN ART RESTITUTION PROJECT, 2002-2013 by Sara J. Angel A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of PhD Graduate Department Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Sara J. Angel 2017 PhD Abstract A Moral Persuasion: The Nazi-Looted Art Recoveries of the Max Stern Art Restitution Project, 2002-2013 Sara J. Angel Department of Art University of Toronto Year of convocation: 2017 In 1937, under Gestapo orders, the Nazis forced the Düsseldorf-born Jewish art dealer Max Stern to sell over 200 of his family’s paintings at Lempertz, a Cologne-based auction house. Stern kept this fact a secret for the rest of his life despite escaping from Europe to Montreal, Canada, where he settled and became one of the country’s leading art dealers by the mid-twentieth century. A decade after Stern’s death in 1987, his heirs (McGill University, Concordia University, and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) discovered the details of what he had lost, and how in the post-war years Stern travelled to Germany in an attempt to reclaim his art. To honour the memory of Max Stern, they founded the Montreal- based Max Stern Art Restitution Project in 2002, dedicated to regaining ownership of his art and to the study of Holocaust-era plunder and recovery. This dissertation presents the histories and circumstances of the first twelve paintings claimed by the organization in the context of the broader history of Nazi-looted art between 1933-2012. Organized into thematic chapters, the dissertation documents how, by following a carefully devised approach of moral persuasion that combines practices like publicity, provenance studies, law enforcement, and legal precedents, the Max Stern Art Restitution Project set international precedents in the return of cultural property.

  • The Itinerary
HARALD SANDNER HITLER THE ITINERARY Whereabouts and Travels from 1889 to 1945 VOLUME I 1889–1927 Introduction Where exactly did Hitler reside from the time of his birth on 20 April 1889 in the Austrian village of Braunau am Inn, then part of Austria-Hungary, until his suicide on 30 April 1945 in Berlin at a time when the Third Reich was almost entirely occupied? This book is a nearly exhaustive account of the German dictator’s movements, and it answers this question. It !rst o"ers a summary of all the places he lived and stayed in, as well as his travel details, in- cluding information about the modes of transport. It then puts this data in its political, military and personal/private context. Additional information relating to the type of transportation used, Hitler’s physical remains and the destruction he left behind are also included. Biographies on Hitler have researched sources dating back to the period between 1889 and 1918. Such biographers – especially in more recent times – were able to as- sess new material and correct the mistakes made by other authors in the past. Prominent examples include Anton Joachimsthaler (1989, 2000, 2003, 2004) and Brigitte Hamann (2002, 2008) ades of Hitler’s life. Hitler became politically active in 1919. Sources from the early years are scarce and relatively neutral. However, soon after that, the tone of the sources is in#uenced heav- ily by the political attitudes of contemporary journalism. Objective information waned, and reports were either glori!ed or highly disapproving. References to travel, the means of transport used, etc do exist to some degree, but are often also contradictory.

  • Art Historians and Nazi Plunder
Jonathan Petropoulos Art Historiansand Nazi Plunder -Imagine the thoughts that passed through the mind of Kajetan Muhlmann in June 1941 as he sat in the first-class compartment of the Reichsbahn train carrying him from Cracow to Berlin. Next to him, wrapped tightly in protective packaging, were three paintings: Raphael's Portrait of a Gentleman, Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, and Rembrandt's Landscape with the Good Samaritan. They were three of the most prized artworks in Poland- taken from the Czartoryski family's collection - and they were in his personal care. Mûhlmann, it would seem, had very mixed emotions as he watched the Polish countryside pass outside the window. On the one hand, he was a Nazi, a German nationalist, and took great satisfaction in the notion that these masterpieces, these examplesof "Aryan"superiority, were returning heim ins Reich ("home to the Reich"). Muhlmann later testified about the excitement he felt merely transporting these masterpieces and the prospect of reporting their arrivalin Berlin to Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring, his patron and protector, undoubtedly enhanced this sentiment. Goring was then at the height of his power and had undeniable presence. To be summoned by the Reichsmarschall to his grandiose Carinhall estate was a heady experience that helped bolster Muhlmann's ego and made him feel a part of the Nazi elite. Yet his excitement and self-satisfaction were tempered by a certain frustration and dread. This was now the second trip to hand over these paintings: after the first deliveryto Berlin, when Goring had stored the works in the KaiserFriedrich Museum, General Governor Hans Frank, another of his superiors, had responded by ordering them returned to Cracow, and Mûhlmann had complied.
