CABLE GRAM July 2017 www.cableairport.com Volume 50, Number 7 Monthly Newsletter Gone West... On Monday, May 29, 2017, CCB lost Tony Settember, proprietor of Foothill Flying Club. Though Tony had a few health issues, his passing was totally unexpected. Tony provided the means to allow hundreds of folks to fullfill their dream of becoming pilots. He always had a smile on his face and positive words to say. Tony will be missed greatly. A memorial gathering will be held for Tony on Saturday, July 8, 2017 beginning at 5:30 PM. The location of the service will be at Bob and Suzanne Cable's hangar (Hangar Q). Tenants Corner: Jim Byrd Jim Byrd has been a regular fixture around CCB for almost 50 years. Here's what he had to say when we caught up with him: What do you fly? My current airplane is a 2013 Cubcrafters CC1-100 SportsCub, which I have leased to Foothill Flying Club (FFC). I give tailwheel instruction through FFC. How long have you been flying? I started flying at Napa County Airport in May of 1952 How long have you been at Cable? And why did you choose Cable? I came to Cable Airport In April of 1968. I came to sell aircraft for Walter Cable. I sold airplanes at Cable until 1972, when Cessna quit making planes and there was an aircraft recession. I then went to Riverside and flew charter for Al Gemende at Air Charter and I ran the radio shop there at Riverside. I then went in business doing control systems for water companies throughout the west. I used aircraft to go do the service work for Water Agencies in Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and California. After selling the business, I went back to teaching flying at Cable Air in the late 90’s. I bought a Champ 7AC in March 2007, kept it in hangar 402 until getting the Cub in June 2016. Your thoughts in general about Cable Airport? To me Cable Airport is the most friendly and pilot oriented airport in the Country and I have been to a lot of them. cableairportccb Serving the General Aviation Community over 70 years cableairport July 2017 www.cableairport.com Volume 50, Number 7 Message from the “Office” MOVING RIGHT ALONG (An update on CCB's Capital Improvement Plans) With the AWOS project close to being wrapped up, the Airport Office is in the process of filing the appropriate project close-out paperwork required by the FAA. This does not mean there is a lull in CCB's capital improvement planning. Quite the contrary. Cable staff has been hard at work since the beginning of the year on its next project: the Apron Rehabilitation Project - Phase I. As of this date, the project has been given an initial approval by the FAA which has allowed CCB to begin the engineering needed for the project. The project entails knocking down some of the original hangars, regrading the asphalt, changing the parking configuration at the entrance of CCB, and preparing the infrastructure for a large, roughly 25,000 square foot maintenance hangar, new offices, and storage facilities to support the new structures. The project is moving faster than anticipated with CCB expected to be out to bid by August 1st. At the current pace, dirt should be be moving in October and the old hangars knocked down in Janaury 2018. It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed by June 2018 whereby Phase II of the project will follow. Phase II of the Apron Rehabilitation Project will entail the removal of the seven-sided building, an revamp of the parking area in front of the Café/Flying Club, and an additional picnic areas for our vistors. Sighted at CCB: USC Racing Team Friday, June 8th, 2017 On Friday, June 8th, the University of Southern California brought their racing team to CCB. They used the "triangle area" to test their race vehicle. B-25 Friday, June 8th, 2017 On Friday, June 8th, the B-25 "Pacific Princess" arrived at CCB to participate in a warbird seminar that was being hosted by Mike Polley. As of this writing, the Pacific Princess is still on the field. July 2017 www.cableairport.com Volume 50, Number 7 Additional Exposure Cable Airport is approached frequently about using its facilities for various purposes other than just aviation. Cable is often very open to these additional ventures since it does aide the Airport in subsidizing costs that would be otherwise passed along to our tenants. So we appreciate your patience when you see such activity here at the Airport as we also see it as a way to showcase what a great place Cable Airport is and gain exposure for people wanting to visit. Cable Airport wishes you a wonderful and safe 4th of July! LAFCO 3216 PROTEST PERIOD EXTENDED TO JULY 11, 2017 The protest period for the LAFCO 3216 has been extended to July 11, 2017. So if you are a City of Upland or San Antonio Heights registered voter or property owner you still have time to fill out your forms and submit them. We are continuing to accept forms until the deadline date. Additional forms are available in the Airport Office and the pilots lounge. The Airport strongly opposes the proposed annexation and asks for your support in submitting protest forms. Most import- ant is that this transaction is taxation without representation. Fees associated with this switch in services will greatly affect the business community and the Airport. If you have more detailed questions regarding the annexation do not hesitate to contact us in the Airport Office. The protest hearing will be held at the Upland City Hall, Council Chambers located at 460 N. Euclid Ave. Upland, CA on July 11th at 6pm. We would like to hear from you...
