Einleitung In diesem Beitrag möchten wir zeigen, dass bestimmte Texte der America Romana an Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler besondere Herausforde- rungen stellen und eine Herangehensweise erfordern, die die institutiona- lisierte disziplinäre Trennung zwischen Sprachwissenschaften einerseits und Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften andererseits überwindet. Die Idee für diesen Beitrag entstand durch eine solche Überwindung dieser Trennung in der Lehre, im Rahmen zweier z.T. gemeinsam, z.T. parallel unterrichteter Seminare „Das Französische in Nordamerika“ und „Intro- duction à l’Amérique française“ im Wintersemester 2010/2011 an der Universität Konstanz. In diesen Seminaren erwiesen sich v.a. diejenigen Texte als eine be- sondere Herausforderung (für die Studierenden wie auch für die Lehren- den), die sich durch eine dezidierte Oralität auszeichnen, die also in ver- schiedenen, vom Frankreichfranzösischen teilweise stark abweichenden, dialektalen und soziolektalen Varietäten des nordamerikanischen Franzö- sisch verfasst sind.     Canada’s New Brunswick: The Fundy and Acadian Coasts Canada’s New Brunswick Slide Show – Images by Lee Foster by Lee Foster “My grandfather used to spread lobsters on the fields as fertilizer,” says Percy Mallet, a French descendant in Canada’s Atlantic province of New Brunswick. “Schoolboys of his era would hide the fact that they had lobster sandwiches in their school lunches. Lobster was a poor man’s food. Cod was a fish you could salt and dry and export, but lobsters were worth little. There was no refrigeration and transportation technology to market lobsters. Lobsters were almost worthless.” How times have changed in Canada’s Atlantic province of New Brunswick. Today the lobster and snow crab fisheries produce and export record catches. A visitor here during the busy summer season, mid-May to mid-September, will be tempted to indulge at the source in lobster, snow crab, oysters, mussels, clams, salmon, cod, halibut, and trout. Two compelling attractions atract visitors to New Brunswick. First, there is the joy of nature, especially the highest tides in the world along the Fundy Coast at the Hopewell Rocks, where the tidal change is 48 feet. A nearby drive, the Fundy Trail Parkway, shows the car traveler, bicyclist, or hiker some of the most dramatic coastal terrain you will find anywhere on the planet. Second, the area boasts a dramatic and forlorn history found nowhere else.     LE PAYS DE LA SAGOUINE La Sagouine, la légendaire femme de ménage qui a fourbi les places des riches pendant toute sa vie a maintenant sa maison, bien à elle, la maison de ses rêves. Plus encore, elle a même son pays, le Pays de la Sagouine. Situé sur la rivière Bouctouche, dans le comté de Kent, en plein Nouveau-Brunswick, ce site historique littéraire est l'aboutissement (mais non pas le sommet) de l'oeuvre de Madame Antonine Maillet, l'auteure acadienne connue aux quatre coins du monde francophone pour son oeuvre littéraire. Le Pays de la Sagouine est un projet très spécial. L'Île aux Puces, reliée à la terre ferme (et donc à la haute société), comprend une quinzaine de bâtiments et de maisons qu'ont habité ou auraient souhaité habiter les personnages de l'oeuvre littéraire de Madame Maillet. (Il faut maintenant, depuis le printemps, dire l'honorable Antonine Maillet, celle-ci ayant été reçue membre du Conseil privé du Canada). Aux couleurs vives, les maisons de la Sagouine, de la Sainte, de Sullivan, les ateliers de Gapi, du Bootlegger et de bien d'autres personnages sont de l'époque des années 1940. Pour certains personnages, il s'agit de la maison de leur rêve; pour d'autres, c'est le vécu de cette époque. Et sur la terre ferme, regardant de haut l'Île aux Puces, il y a toute la structure d'une attraction touristique moderne avec ses salles de projection, ses boutiques, son restaurant et la grande tente pour les spectacles. Ce projet, qui a d'ailleurs valu à son architecte, Élide Albert, de Bouctouche un prix canadien d'architecture pour l'utilisation du bois dans une oeuvre semblable, a été officiellement inauguré en juillet dernier, soit exactement 20 ans après la première sortie publique de la Sagouine.
