CCHA, Report, 28 (1961), 25-30 Prince Edward Island and Confederation 1863-1873 Francis William Pius BOLGER, Ph.D. St. Dunstan’s University, Charlottetown The idea of Confederation did not receive serious consideration in Prince Edward Island prior to the year 1863. Ten more years elapsed before the subject of union with the British North American Colonies moved into the non-academic and practical sphere. The position of the Island in the Confederation negotiations illustrated in large measure the characteristics of its politics and its attitude to distant administrations. This attitude might best be described simply as a policy of exclusiveness. The history of the Confederation negotiations in Prince Edward Island consisted of the interplay of British, Canadian, and Maritime influences upon this policy. It is the purpose of this paper to tell the story of Confederation in Prince Edward Island from 1863 to 1873. The policy of exclusiveness, which characterized Prince Erward Island’s attitude to Confederation, was clearly revealed in the political arena. The Islanders had a profound respect for local self-government. They enjoyed their political independence, particularly after the attainment of responsible government in 1851, and did not wish to see a reduction in the significance of their local institutions. They realized, moreover, that they would have an insignificant voice in a centralized legislature, and as a result they feared that their local needs would be disregarded. Finally, previous frustrating experience with the Imperial government with respect to the settlement of the land question on the Island had taught the Islanders that it was extremely hazardous to trust the management of local problems to distant and possibly unsympathetic administrations.

Antonine Maillets La Sagouine : Interdisziplinäre Begegnungen in der Akadie Georg A. Kaiser & Florian Freitag 1 (Konstanz/Mainz) 1. Einleitung In diesem Beitrag möchten wir zeigen, dass bestimmte Texte der America Romana an Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler besondere Herausforde- rungen stellen und eine Herangehensweise erfordern, die die institutiona- lisierte disziplinäre Trennung zwischen Sprachwissenschaften einerseits und Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften andererseits überwindet. Die Idee für diesen Beitrag entstand durch eine solche Überwindung dieser Trennung in der Lehre, im Rahmen zweier z.T. gemeinsam, z.T. parallel unterrichteter Seminare „Das Französische in Nordamerika“ und „Intro- duction à l’Amérique française“ im Wintersemester 2010/2011 an der Universität Konstanz. In diesen Seminaren erwiesen sich v.a. diejenigen Texte als eine be- sondere Herausforderung (für die Studierenden wie auch für die Lehren- den), die sich durch eine dezidierte Oralität auszeichnen, die also in ver- schiedenen, vom Frankreichfranzösischen teilweise stark abweichenden, dialektalen und soziolektalen Varietäten des nordamerikanischen Franzö- sisch verfasst sind. Dazu zählen z.B. sogenannte romans de la terre aus Québec wie etwa Ringuets Trente arpents (1938), in denen zwar die Erzäh- lerstimme Frankreichfranzösisch, die einzelnen Charaktere in direkter Rede jedoch Québec-Französisch verwenden. It was prepared as part of the Advice Seeking Networks in Long Term Care project (2014-2017), Atlantic Canada site, to assist with the analysis and interpretation of findings from the surveys and interviews with seniors leaders in the long term care sectors in these respective provinces. Information on the long term care systems reflects the situation as of 2014-15, the time of the study’s data collection. Background The formal structure of Canada’s long term care sector is complex and varies across provinces and territories. This is largely attributed to the lack of federal jurisdiction for this care setting, unlike care provided in a hospital or other acute care setting. This document speaks to the landscape of residential long-term care in Canada’s Maritime provinces and factors that may contribute to the organization and advice-seeking behavior within the respective provincial long- term care systems. Located on the eastern coast of Canada, the Maritimes consist of three provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. While the Maritime provinces are often considered as a collective entity, the organization and delivery of long-care term services falls under provincial jurisdiction, leading to differences across each system.
