For the complementation of the data were examined collections deposited in the principal herbaria of southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, and were analyzed image of types and others collections available. All studied species were photographed and its populations geo-referenced. It are recognized six species: C. alba Roitman & Castillo, C. azurea, C. charruana Deble, C. luteola (Klatt) Baker, C. minima Roitman & Castillo and C. riograndensis Deble. C. azurea is cited for Brazil, C. charruana is added to Argentinian flora, C. luteola has its taxonomic delimitation established, and its occurrence is extended up to the northern Uruguay. The geographic distribution of C. riograndensis is reestablished, in view of three collections mentioned in the protologue are identified as belonging at others species. All species studied are described, illustrated through of photos, being presented data about geographic distribution, ecology and conservation. Aceito em 13.V.2014 ABSTRACT - Gelasine uruguaiensis Ravenna has two recognized subspecies: G. uruguaiensis ssp. uruguaiensis and G. uruguaiensis ssp. orientalis Ravenna. During sampling in the Aceguá municipality, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, the fi rst subspecies was found. G. uruguaiensis ssp. uruguaiensis is easily separeted from G. elongata (Graham) Ravenna by its style, which substantially surpasses the anthers, by the larger perigone diameter, and by spreading tepals, where the inner tepals are smaller than the outer tepals. Gelasine uruguaiensis ssp. uruguaiensis differs from G. uruguaiensis ssp. orientalis by its larger perigone, shape and larger outer tepals. The subspecies is described, illustrated, and the taxonomic affi nities and ecological data are discussed, with a map of the Brazilian geographical distribution. Gelasine uruguaiensis Ravenna tem reconhecida duas subespécies G. uruguaiensis ssp. uruguaiensis e G. uruguaiensis ssp. orientalis Ravenna. Durante expedições de coleta no município de Aceguá, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, foi constatada a ocorrência da primeira subespécie. -

Again, we are coming to you with a new catalogue and again we are including many new varieties in it, probably not so many as we would like, but our stocks do not increase as fast as the demand for our bulbs. We hope for many more novelties in the next catalogue. Last season we had one more successful expedition – we found and collected 3 juno irises never before cultivated (we hope that they will be a good addition to our Iris collection) and many other nice plants, too. In garden we experienced a very difficult season. The spring came very early – in the first decade of April the temperature unexpectedly rose up to +270 C, everything came up, flowered and finished flowering in few days and then during one day the temperature fell as low as –80 C. A lot of foliage was killed by a returned frost. As a result the crop of bulbs was very poor. The weather till the end of June was very dry – no rain at all, only hot days followed by cold nights. But then it started to rain. There were days with the relative air humidity up to 98%. The drying of harvested bulbs was very difficult. I was forced to clean one of my living rooms in my house, to heat it and to place there the boxes with Allium and Tulipa bulbs to save them from Penicillium. -

MANNING** Keywords: Ferraria Burm . ex Mill ., floral biology, Iridaceae, new species, taxonomy, tropical Africa, winter rainfall southern Africa ABSTRACT Following field and herbarium investigation of the subequatorial African and mainly western southern African Ferraria Burm . ex Mill . (Iridaceae: Iridoideae), a genus of cormous geophytes, we recognize 18 species, eight more than were included in the 1979 account of the genus by M .P . de Vos . One of these, F. ovata, based on Moraea ovata Thunb . (1800), was only discovered to be a species of Ferraria in 2001, and three more are the result of our different view of De Vos’s taxonomy . In tropical Africa, F. glutinosa is recircumscribed to include only mid- to late summer-flowering plants, usually with a single basal leaf and with purple to brown flowers often marked with yellow . A second summer-flowering species,F. candelabrum, includes taller plants with several basal leaves . Spring and early summer-flowering plants lacking foliage leaves and with yellow flowers from central Africa are referred toF. spithamea or F. welwitschii respectively . The remaining species are restricted to western southern Africa, an area of winter rainfall and summer drought . We rec- ognize three new species: F. flavaand F. ornata from the sandveld of coastal Namaqualand, and F. parva, which has among the smallest flowers in the genus and is restricted to the Western Cape coastal plain between Ganzekraal and Langrietvlei near Hopefield . Ferraria ornata blooms in May and June in response to the first rains of the season . -

Given its recent origin and continental insularity among tropical lowlands, the páramo evolved as a biodiversity hotspot, with a vascular flora of more than 3400 species and high endemism. Moreover, the páramo provides many ecosystem services for human populations, essentially water supply and carbon storage. Anthropogenic activities, mostly agriculture and burning- grazing practices, as well as climate change are major threats for the páramo’s integrity. Consequently, further scientific research and conservation strategies must be oriented towards this unique region. Botanical and ecological knowledge on the páramo is extensive but geographically heterogeneous. Moreover, most research studies and management strategies are carried out at local to national scale and given the vast extension of the páramo, regional studies are also needed. The principal limitation for regional páramo studies is the lack of a substantial source of good quality botanical data covering the entire region and freely accessible. To meet the needs for a regional data source, we created VegPáramo, a floristic and vegetation database containing 3000 vegetation plots sampled with the phytosociological method throughout the páramo region and proceeding from the existing literature and our fieldwork (Chapter 1). -

(l)) from tunisia was studied. Initially, morphological traits analyzed concern floral and vegetative characters. Analysis of variance showed significant differences. Higher variation coefficient belongs to flower height, flower diameter, filament length, seed diameter, and level number. Pearson coefficients correlations between different characters were positive and highly significant (p< 0.0001) for flower diameter and flower heigth. Factor analysis showed that only two axes define 100% of variance among characters. Secondly, in cytological variation each species had different karyotypic formula such as 2n = 32 = 30sm + 2st for iris juncea with a satellite in pair number 2; 2n= 24 = 18 st + 6 sm for iris sisyrinchium beja‘s population and 2n=26=18 st + 8sm for iris sisyrinchium hammamet population. E-mail: Abstract: A systematic survey was carried out on wet grasslands found over Histosols at Upper Tibagi River basin, between Ponta Grossa and Palmeira municipalities, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, place of high importance because of soil water retention capability and soil carbon pool composition. We provide a checklist containing 146 species, 96 genera and 42 plant families for the area. Families with higher species richness were Asteraceae (27 species; 21 genera), Poaceae (24; 16) and Cyperaceae (18; 6). Four species were classified as endangered or rare, and one as exotic. The specific richness in wet grassland environments at the state of Paraná underlines the need for conservation efforts encompassing these formations. Among them, 13 lectotypes and one neotype are designated for the first time, and three previous typifications are briefly commented. Geography of Iridaceae in Africa
Bothalia 14, 3 & 4: 559-564 (1983) Geography of Iridaceae in Africa P. GOLDBLATT* ABSTRACT Iridaceae, a family of worldwide distribution, comprises some 1 500 species and 85 genera. It exhibits its greatest radiation in Sub-Saharan Africa, where over half the species and some 48 genera occur. 45 of which are endemic. All three major subfamilial taxa are represented in Africa, where Ixioideae are almost entirely restricted, with extensions into Eurasia. Areas of greatest concentration are either montane or in areas of winter rainfall. In southern Africa alone, there are some 850 species in 46 genera, making the family the fifth largest in the flora. In the Cape Floristic Region there are 620 species, and the family is the fourth largest in this area. All major infrafamilial groups occur in the Cape Region where most of the variability as well as generic radiation is encountered. The idea of a southern origin for Iridaceae in Africa is analysed systematically, and is correlated with the major climatic changes that occurred in Africa since the mid-Tertiary, and culminated in the seasonally dry climates along the west coast. The establishment of mediterranean climate in the southwest provided the stimulus for massive speciation and radiation of the family there. Plio-Pleistocene uplift along the eastern half of the African continent led to the establishment of substantial upland areas and allowed the spread of some genera, such as Romulea, Gladiolus, Moraea, and Hesperantha into tropical Africa. Short-distance dispersal probably accounts for the presence of genera such as Gladiolus, Gynandriris and Romulea in Eurasia. -
