• PROGRAM NOTES Jean Sibelius Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 43
PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Jean Sibelius Born December 8, 1865, Tavastehus, Finland. Died September 20, 1957, Järvenpää, Finland. Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 43 Sibelius completed this symphony in 1902 and conducted the first performance on March 8 of that year in Helsinki. The score calls for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons; four horns; three trumpets; three trombones and tuba; timpani; and strings. Performance time is approximately forty-three minutes. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s first subscription concert performances of Sibelius’s Second Symphony were given at the Auditorium Theatre on January 1 and 2, 1904, with Theodore Thomas conducting. Our most recent subscription concert performances were given at Orchestra Hall on January 9, 10, and 12, 2003, with Antonio Pappano conducting. The Orchestra first performed this symphony at the Ravinia Festival on August 2, 1936, with Werner Janssen conducting, and most recently on July 26, 1991, with Mariss Jansons conducting. The spell of Italy often has a salutary effect on artists from the North. Goethe regularly recommended making the trip to Italy—Mendelssohn took his advice and returned with his Italian Symphony. Berlioz toured Italy against his better judgment and ended up staying fifteen months, addicted to the countryside (Harold in Italy is the souvenir he brought us). Wagner claimed he got the idea for the opening of Das Rheingold in La Spezia on the western seacoast. Tchaikovsky later nursed a broken spirit in Italy and took home his Capriccio italien, as untroubled as any music he ever wrote. Jean Sibelius went to Italy in 1901.

  • Fifty Years of Ferry Service
Press release, August 28, 2014 Viking Line unveils new entertainment concepts This autumn, Viking Line is launching new, multi-facetted entertainment concepts on its vessels. In addition to the common themes on all its ferries, passengers will be offered entertainment programmes that vary from one vessel to another. These new concepts will enable Viking Line to provide a diverse range of entertainment on different vessels as well as individual theme cruises and food-centric voyages. Among the items on the autumn entertainment menu will be big cities, the 1950s and Nordic flavours. In addition, Viking Line will offer bingo cruises and cruises that feature beer and wine themes, for example. “So it will be worthwhile to think about cruise alternatives based on the programme or a particular food-related theme. Instead of one major theme for all our vessels, we would like to offer several entertainment alternatives for our different target groups,” says Christa Grönlund, Communications Manager at Viking Line. Circus and big city atmosphere One of the big themes this autumn will be “Bright Lights, Big Cities”, a concept that can be experienced on the Helsinki–Stockholm route. Passengers on board the M/S Mariella and M/S Gabriella will get a dose of big city atmosphere when an international show group takes over these vessels. The group, who will perform in the night club as well as in lobbies and bars, will offer gripping vocal performances and fast-paced shows, as well as circus artistry. “We can promise superb contemporary circus acts plus versatile song and dance performances.

  • 2004 Stamp Issues Review
2004 Stamp Issues Review John Moody dips into a selection of postal authority issues December traditionally sees the publication of various annual new issue compilations. Most postal authorities now produce yearbooks, packs, booklets and folders displaying its issues for the year. Some cover every stamp, including booklets and definitives, and some just concentrate on their commemorative issues. Each postal authority, however, tackles its publishing venture in a different manner and a fascinating and attractive addition to the philatelic library some of these books make. Space precludes a review of every yearbook, folder or list published but this representative sample is sure to whet the philatelic appetite. Our thanks are extended to the Monaco, Irish, Finnish, New Zealand, Romanian, South African, Singapore and United Nations postal authorities for providing samples of their 2004 issues and news of their 2005 schedule. The total issues of new stamps in 2003 fell from the record of 2002 but indications are that the 2004 figure will have increased once again, perhaps not a good thing for the hobby ? Varied stamp issues from Monaco Although Monaco is a small country, its 2004 stamp issue was quite large with nearly 40 new stamps. The wide range of subjects covered reflects the varied interests of the Monegasque people and the international role this country plays in many fields. One of the few monarchies left in Europe, Monaco’s stamps are evidence of the influence the Grimaldi family has in the Principality, with several issues dedicated to the life and works The history and folklore of Monaco is reflected in a four- of the late Princess Grace.

But finding true freedom within our communities, within our families and within ourselves is no easy task. Nor is it easy to reconcile our own freedom with the political, religious and cultural freedoms of others. Happily, the conflict created by our search for freedom makes for great theatre... Shakespeare’s The Tempest, in which I’m delighted to direct Martha Henry, is a play about the yearning to be released from CLASSICCLASSI FILMS imprisonment, as revenge and forgiveness vie OscarWildeCinema.com TM for the upper hand in Prospero’s heart. Erin Shields’s exciting new interpretation of Milton’s Paradise Lost takes an ultra- contemporary look at humanity’s age-old desire for free will – and the consequences of acting on it. I’m very proud that we have the internationally renowned Robert Lepage with us directing Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, a play about early Roman democracy. It is as important to understanding the current state of our democratic institutions as is Shakespeare’s play about the end of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar. Recent events have underlined the need for the iconic story To Kill a Mockingbird to be told, as a powerful reminder that there can be no freedom without justice.
