The Prefecture of Messinia
MESSINIA THE PREFECTURE OF MESSINIA On the southwest end of the Peloponnese, with its rich natural landscape and its age long history, Messenia Prefecture, numbers, nowadays, 175.600 residents. The prefecture has all modern infrastructures of a hospitable place; thus, you can reach Messenia either by driving or by airplane. It was one of the few major settlements on the Greek mainland to be founded in the Hellenistic period. Moreover, on account of this, its claim to a culturally authoritative past rooted in the mythic period could not rest on suppositions about the continuity of knowledge handed down through the continuation of civic, cultic, and communal institutions. This chapter examines how Pausanias’ account of Messenia (book four of his Periegesis) approaches this dilemma by making knowledge both an artefact preserved unchanged in texts, and a conceptual possession encountered and attained through travel. It goes on to argue that the interplay between these two forms of knowledge is speciﬁcally relevant to this text, since the Periegesis also serves as a ﬁxed, written object, which nonetheless offers opportunities for autonomous exploration and experience to the hodological reader-traveler. In accordance with the heterological tradition, this study emphasises the determining effect of theoretical assumptions on our conceptualizations of the past. This study scrutinises how classical archaeologists and ancient historians have conceptualized ethnic groups, in particular the Messenians. Ethnic groups have traditionally been regarded as static with clear-cut boundaries. Each group has also been attributed with certain essential characteristics. According to this view, the Messenian ethnic identity was preserved during the period of Spartan occupation. This view is facilitated by a passive perspective, which regards evidence as reflections of reality and emphasises continuity. This culture historical perspective, which gives precedence to literary evidence and reduces archaeology to a handmaiden of history, has prevailed in classics from the 19th century until today. It can be juxtaposed with perspectives, discernable in classics from the 1960s onwards, which maintain that various parts of culture are manipulated in accordance with contemporaneous socio- political needs. These active perspectives — ranging from systems theoretical, functionalistic to processual models — resemble the instrumentalist model in anthropology which regards ethnicity as a dynamic and flexible strategy.

Nichoria raises many of the questions about what had happened to the inhabitants of the Greek mainland once the Mycenaean palace system had fallen. In pursuing this line of inquiry both the site of Nichoria and the region of Messenia will be considered with special emphasis on examining these in their own context without anticipating the Greek civilization which came afterwards. Nichoria shows us that there is more continuity from the Bronze Age than has often been admitted. There is value in parsing this and distinguishing it from associations with Homer and other 8th century social realities. Indeed, what it holds most in common with other Greek communities both contemporary to it and later is what emerged after the Bronze Age: a parochial community that is self-referential in its norms.

EZTI TTYAOZ nPO fTYAOlO It is perhaps inevitable that in a field as restricted as Mycenaean studies it is impossible to move without treading on someone's toes. Certainly I am conscious of having mine very nastily jarred by the new study by S. Hillerx of the geography of the Pylian kingdom, a subject which has occupied my attention for many years past2. My last publication was too late to appear in more than a footnote in Hiller's book, and there is another still at the time of writing in the press. Had he come to conclusions similar to mine, I should have welcomed them; had he convinced me I was wrong, I would have cheerfully confessed my errors. But I regret to say that I believe Hiller to have made a few fundamental errors, and as a result to have reached conclusions very different from mine. What is useful about such a book is that it com- pels one to stop in one's tracks and go back to the basic points long since established, to see if perhaps the wrong choice was made at a distant fork, and thus to re-open the question from that point. Obviously, if my basic decisions, especially that governing the northern frontier, are wrong, almost all my work since is worthless; equally if Hiller is wrong, a large amount of his work is worthless. I propose therefore not to write a review, but to examine his arguments in detail to see if I can still support my own opinions. The book divides very clearly into two parts: the Mycenaean and the Homeric geography.
