TO PETER SOMMER TR AVELS Writing this in autumn 2020, it is hard to know quite where to begin. I usually review the season just gone, the new tours that we ran, the preparatory recces we made, the new tours we are unveiling for the next year, the feedback we have received and our exciting plans for the future. However, as you well know, this year has been unlike any other in our collective memory. Our exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray, just like many of yours. We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. All of us here at PST are extremely grateful and heartened by your enthusiasm and eagerness to travel with us when it becomes possible. PST is a small, flexible, and dynamic company. We have weathered countless downturns during the many years we have been operating. Elin, my wife, and I have always reinvested in the business with long term goals and are very used to surviving all manner of curve balls, although COVID-19 is certainly the biggest we have yet faced.

Number: 2019-3-EL02-KA105-005240 Dates: 10 – 14 May 2020 (excluding travel days) INFOPACK FOR PARTICIPANTS Description of the project Non-formal learning is an amazing tool that can support young people in building their competences and skills, foster their understanding of themselves, and encourage them to become more active and open to new possibilities and opportunities at personal, social and professional levels. It can also support youth workers and staff of youth organizations to develop their own capacity and improve the services that they provide to young people, especially when it comes to assessing and understanding the needs of young people and helping them reach their full potential. Especially in smaller cities and rural areas, the development of quality youth work and non-formal learning activities is extremely important, as it can give extra opportunities to the young people living there to develop their competences, and encourage them to stay in these areas, becoming more active and discovering ways to support the development of their community. This training course is addressed to youth workers and members of youth organisations active in smaller cities and rural areas that wish to better understand non-formal learning, build their capacity in running non-formal learning activities and

Let us share the secrets of Greece with you!! Experience Peloponnese Overview of the destination Peloponnese is one of the most important regions of Greece, rich in history and full of culture, tradition, ancient monuments, towns and beautiful sceneries. The mountainous and fertile landscapes of the North give their place to rocky formations sliding into the sea at the south. Sceneries of orange and the smells of the orange trees turn to green as the land surrenders to the domination of olive trees and their valuable fruits. Anything you desire you can find in Peloponnese. Seaside luxury resorts, small traditional cottages with homemade breakfast, cliff hanging luxury settlements and farm houses with agricultural activities can accommodate your ultimate desires. Those more adventurous can enjoy trekking expeditions, river rafting and cycling in the countryside. If you want to go deep into history, you can travel from antiquity to the Byzantine era. Mycenae, Ancient Olympia, Megalopolis, Naflpion, Mystras, Monemvasia and Pylos are few of the places you can admire. The charming villages with the stone built houses and the narrow quarters will seduce you with their simplicity and hospitable inhabitants.

The Mani, in southernmost Greece, is a land where myths were born, gods once roamed, and the people are as proud and rugged as the mountains they call home. Jim Yardley gets lost in one of the last great undiscovered corners of Europe. photographs by Martyn Thompson WRITTEN STOin NE Traditional Maniot tower houses in the village of Vathia. travelandleisure.com 123 half-century ago, the road linking the Mani to the rest of Greece came to an abrupt end. In Patrick Leigh Fermor’s beguiling 1958 book, Mani: Travels in the Southern Peloponnese, the proprietress of a guesthouse near the caves notices Fermor’s future wife writing a letter to a friend in England. “Well,” the proprietress says, “tell them in London that you are in the Mani, a very hot place, and there is nothing but stones.” Soon enough, I came to the stones. The road cut through a sun-baked valley where olive groves were pinched between the sheer gray cliffs of the Taiyetos Mountains and the striking blue of the Mediterranean. Stone tower houses rose from almost every hilltop, medieval silhouettes against the sun of late afternoon. On a distant ridge, I could see the dome of a 12th-century Byzantine church. There was not a modern convenience in sight; it was as if the calendar had reached 1150, then stopped. Here at continental Greece’s arid and remote southernmost point, survival has never been taken for granted. Yet as the road traced the coast, I began to understand why the Maniots were de- termined to stick around.

Chapter Four The Stone-Built Palaiomaniatika of the Mani Peninsula, Greece Rebecca M. Seifried The Mani peninsula, the southernmost projection of the Peloponnese in Greece, is the location of over 170 settlements with preserved stone-built architecture from the premodern era (Figure 1). These remarkable places are known locally as palaiomaniatika (old Maniat settlements) or palaio- chores (old villages). The settlements are small, comprising between 10 and 50 houses, and they were built and occupied by local residents of the Mani peninsula. The vernacular architecture of the houses is relatively ho- mogenous, constituting the typical one- or two-story rectangular layout (i.e. the “longhouse”) that is common throughout rural landscapes in the Peloponnese (Sigalos 2004a, 2004b:66; Stedman 1996:185–186). Roughly half of the settlements are still inhabited today, with the same houses that were built centuries ago serving as the foundations for modern homes and newer buildings constructed in the spaces between to form the nucleated settlement layout that is typical of modern Greek villages.

Overview Bicycle Tours in Greece: Cycling Ancient Greece: Sparta to Kardamyli Plus! Pylos OVERVIEW Our bicycling tour of the Southern Peloponnese starts in ancient Sparta and covers the regions of Laconia and Messinia focusing on the Mani Peninsula, an area bursting with ancient and mythological history. The Mani Peninsula also has some of the most dramatic and varied scenery in Greece, much of it still wonderfully unexplored. You will bicycle through diverse landscapes including the lush, steep foothills of the Taÿgetos Mountains, pristine coastal coves dotted with tiny villages nestled amid olive groves, and arid landscapes peppered with abandoned stone towers in the south of the peninsula. We begin our cycling adventure in Mystras, home to one of Greece’s most beautiful archaeological sites, and ride along hilly coastal roads, staying in the picturesque villages of Gythio and Areopoli before retreating to the charming village of Kardamyli. From Kardamyli, we extend our journey along the Akrita Peninsula.
