George summons big numbers. In fifty years of publishing he has seen over a hundred books into print by over sixty different publishers. The print and online editions of “Bowering’s Books” assemble forty-six writers with a wide variety of pieces, some of them critical discussions of George’s books, some of them memoirs and biographies, some of them tributes that adopt language-stratagems that rival his own. We include reflections by his publishers, by his former students, and of course by his irrepressible friends. Other pieces refer to his meticulously amassed book collections, another examines his long history of public readings, and a recent interview asks George to create yet another collection, a library of the fifty books most important to him. Accordingly, we include an architect’s vision for a “George Bowering Library.” It’s a major challenge for even a committed reader and writer to keep pace with George, let alone capture the extraordinary subtlety of his work: we offer instances, we describe, and we swap anecdotes. But his genius is a spirited and elusive entity. There’s a tease waiting for the critic at every turn and a goading to keep at it and see if we’re equal to his wit and invention. Meanwhile his eye’s on the tangent, on a new experiment, on another hybrid, on disruption of his and our paths of thinking. This issue is for George, with awe and with gratitude for the laughter and the joy in language! Photo credit: Paul Little for SFU Colin Browne / George Bowering: The First Fifty The following conversation took place in Vancouver in the kitchen of Jean Baird and George Bowering on the afternoon of Saturday, August 16, 2014. Prior to turning on the recorder, I asked George, given the theme of this special issue of The Capilano Review, to consider building a library from scratch. With this undertaking in mind, what would be the first fifty books, and why would we make this library? George Bowering: Oh, in the hope that archaeologists far in the future will dig it up and say, “Oh! This is what they had before they imprinted things in our foreheads!” No. I guess I’ve always been fascinated with libraries. I built one in my house and then got rid of it and then built another one. When I was a kid every time I read a book I’d give it away. I’m now starting to do that again except with very certain authors, like you, for instance. [Laughter] But I always did that up until I was 22, or something like that, which meant several hundred books I just gave away—magazines and books—and whatever I read I would give it away when I was finished with it. Except for sports magazines which I kept and still have. Colin Browne: Was that because you didn’t have a place to keep them? GB: I think I had a sense that I would try to get through life with nothing but a briefcase. This was when I was thirteen. I didn’t want to have things. I was never going to smoke, I was never going to drink, and I was never going to have things. It was partly because I was like a personal, private Jesus freak, and He didn’t have anything, right? I thought, “That’s really cool,” because it’s the opposite of what most people are urged to do—get a car, get a house, etc. Nobody had to teach me to be different from everybody else. There is a copy of Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days on the table between us. CB: I see we have a copy of Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days.

Through a comparative case approach, I present eight scenes which register and enact larger political, social, and aesthetic tendencies in art between Canada and the United States from 1965 to 1975. These cases include Jack Bush’s relationship with the critic Clement Greenberg; Brydon Smith’s first decade as curator at the National Gallery of Canada (1967–1975); the exhibition New York 13 (1969) at the Vancouver Art Gallery; Greg Curnoe’s debt to New York Neo-dada; Joyce Wieland living in New York and making work for exhibition in Toronto (1962–1972); Barry Lord and Gail Dexter’s involvement with the Canadian Liberation Movement (1970–1975); the use of surrogates and copies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1967–1972); and the Eternal Network performance event, Decca Dance, in Los Angeles (1974). Relying heavily on my work in institutional archives, artists’ fonds, and research interviews, I establish chronologies and describe events. By the close of my study, in the mid-1970s, the movement of art and ideas was eased between Canada and the United States, anticipating the advent of a globalized art world.

    WRITING HERE1 W.H. NEW n 2003, for the BC Federation of Writers, Susan Musgrave assembled a collection of new fiction and poetry from some fifty-two IBC writers, called The FED Anthology.2 Included in this anthology is a story by Carol Matthews called “Living in ascii,” which begins with a woman recording her husband’s annoyance at whatever he sees as stupidity (noisy traffic and inaccurate grammar, for instance, and the loss of his own words when his computer apparently swallows them). This woman then tells of going to a party, of the shifting (and sometimes divisive) relationships among all the women who were attending, and of the subjects they discussed. These included a rape trial, national survival, men, cliffs, courage, cormorant nests, and endangered species. After reflecting on the etymology of the word “egg” (and its connection with the word “edge”), she then declares her impatience with schisms and losses, and her wish to recover something whole. The story closes this way: “If I were to tell the true story, I would write it not in words but in symbols, [like an] ... ascii printout. It would be very short and very true. It would go like this: moon, woman, woman; man, bird, sun; heart, heart, heart, heart, heart; rock, scissors, paper. The title would be egg. That would be the whole story.”3 This egg is the prologue to my comments here. So is the list of disparate nouns – or only seemingly disparate, in that (by collecting them as she does) the narrator connects them into story.

    A Bloomsday Interview With Joanne Kyger in New York Trevor Carolan “I don’t think it was until I moved to Bolinas in 1969 that I really entered into a close relationship with the land around me in my writing. About the birds who live here, to this day the quail are probably my closest neighbors.” * “Poetry has a lot to do with awakening,” Joanne Kyger has noted. I came to appreciate this while teaching a humanities seminar at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. The readings included a constellation of writers associated with “San Francisco: the Athens of the American West”, a large number of whom were Buddhist-influenced. I noticed how young male students gravitated to work by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, or Kenneth Rexroth; by contrast, women students responded strongly to the poetry and poetics of Joanne Kyger and Diane di Prima. Accordingly, I began paying closer attention to the transpacific inflections that percolate through the work of other women writers like Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, Alice Walker, Jane Hirschfield, and bell hooks. In June, 2008, Joanne Kyger was a featured speaker at The Beats In India, an Asia Centre symposium in New York. The event celebrated the journey made in 1962 by Kyger, her then-husband Snyder, and fellow American poets Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky, and addressed ‘what drew the Beats to India and how they inspired successive generations of Americans to turn to the East for spiritual and creative wisdom’. There was a sense of historical importance about the gathering. Two days later on Bloomsday, I spoke with Kyger at the loft home office of Vincent Katz, publisher of Kyger’s poetry collection, Not Veracruz (Libellum Books).

BROADSIDES PROLIFERATED during the small press and mimeograph era as a logical offshoot of poets assuming control of their means of publication. When technology evolved from typewriter, stencil, and mimeo machine to moveable type and sophisticated printing, broadsides provided a site for innovation with design and materials that might not be appropriate for an entire pamphlet or book; thus, they occupy a very specific place within literary and print culture. Poem on the Page: A Collection of Broadsides includes approximately 500 broadsides from a diverse range of poets, printers, designers, and publishers. It is a unique document of a particular aspect of the small press movement as well as a valuable resource for research into the intersection of poetry and printing.
