Reflections on a Complicated Pesach by Rabbi Joel Seltzer 1 March 31, 2020 6 Nisan 5780 In a typical year, perhaps our only source of anxiety would be related to cleaning and shopping for Passover. But this is not a typical year. In fact, for many of us, this may indeed be the first time in our lives where our typical observance of Pesach feels truly interrupted. Instead of seemingly-perennial questions like: “Who’s hosting seder second night?” We are now asking: “How are we going to teach Sabba and Savta how to use Zoom?” And, of course, more worrisome questions also trouble us these days. Yet the observance of the Seder ritual during Pesach remains the single-most observed Jewish ritual in the world, and it is important to take note of the countless seders in our collective past which were held in solitude, in fear, and from within the depths. This year let us focus on gratitude as well. Gratitude for our health, something we always say, but now we truly mean. Gratitude for the incredible advancement of technology which allows us to connect to so many, so deeply, despite our solitude and isolation. Gratitude for the doctors and nurses who will not attend our Seders this year because they will be at work; or in isolation; or those that do attend our Seders, but who bear the weight of the world on their shoulders. No this is not a typical year; and this is not a typical Seder supplement. Not surprisingly, with our recent turn to delivering meaningful online content, and with people’s minds being otherwise preoccupied, we don’t have our usual abundance of new material for your Seders. But we are proud to offer you some interesting ideas for this year, as well as all of our past Seder supplements which we hope will bring joy, meaning, laughter, and memories of camp to your Seder table this year. Reflections on a Complicated Pesach By Rabbi Joel Seltzer Years ago I purchased a book called: She’lot u’Teshuvot Me’ma’amakim - Responsa from the Holocaust by Rabbi Ephraim Oshry z”l. Rabbi Oshry (1914-2003) was a Lithuanian Rabbi who was most famous for being a Halachik Posek, one who answers questions of practical Halakhah, in the Kovno Ghetto during the years of the Holocaust. This tragic collection of his work is both maddening and inspiring. On the one hand, in times of unspeakable oppression - why would one be concerned with minute issues of Jewish Law? On the other hand, in times of unspeakable oppression - the Jewish people have always turned to even the most minute issues of Jewish Law as a source of support, strength, and resilience. Earlier in the year, a Holocaust survivor spoke to a group of students at Kellman Brown Academy about his family’s experience surviving underground. Later in life, after liberation, when times were tough - real hardship, real challenges, real grief - nonetheless he would always remind his family an important lesson in two simple words: “Compared to What?” Below is an excerpt from this powerful book on the topic of Passover in the Kovno Ghetto. It is important for us to reconnect occasionally with difficult struggles of our past. As you read at your Seder, ask yourselves: In what way is this similar to the Story of the Exodus? In what way does this inspire you? In what ways does it make you sad? Is there anything it can teach us about our own worrisome time? Eating Soaked Matzah to Fulfill the Passover Mitzvah Question: In the winter of 5702 (1942), several months before Passover, many of the Jews in the Kovno Ghetto began to try to figure out ways to fulfill the mitzvah of eating 3 matzah on Pesach. At that time even the most basic foods were not available in the ghetto, let alone white flour from which matzah is normally baked. Precisely because of this plight, people made every effort not to be ensnared by depression or apathy but to retain their spirits and their psychological strength, hoping that the evil forces would ultimately be destroyed and the prisoners set free. Toward this end, I organized a small secret group of men who undertook to find ways and means of obtaining flour so that they could bake matzot and fulfill, at the very least, the mitzvah of eating an olive-sized piece of matzah on Passover Eve. One member of the group was Moshe Goldkorn—may G-d avenge him—a Polish Jew who had escaped the German murderers and found his way to Lithuania, only to be cast into the Kovno Ghetto along with us. This man labored in the Jordan Brigade and came into contact with Lithuanians with whom he could barter for flour. The flour was hidden in a secret place guarded very carefully so that no harm would come to it. Bit by bit, Goldkorn smuggled in enough flour to bake matzot for nearly 100 Jews, each of whom would receive one olive-sized piece of matzah. Two days before Passover, Goldkorn was returning from his labor in the evening. He was stopped by German police and searched. A small bag of flour was found on his person. When the Germans realized that a Jew, despite their strict orders to bring no food into the ghetto, had dared violate their edict, they beat him violently and viciously all along his entire body, but the worst of it was that they broke all of his teeth. Afterward, Goldkorn came to me with a very serious problem. As he spoke, he broke into tears. “With my broken teeth, how can I fulfill the mitzvah of eating an olive-sized piece of matzah? Since I come from a chassidic family, whose custom is never to eat matzah that is soaked (gebrochs) on Pesach, how can I break that custom now? Is there any way for me to fulfill the mitzvah of eating matzah?” Response from Rabbi Oshry: The tradition of not soaking matzah is a stringency. Halacha does not forbid soaking matzah. I allowed the questioner to soak the matzah in water even though he was descended from Chassidim whose custom was not to eat soaked matzah on Pesach—because he had no other way of fulfilling the mitzvah, a mitzvah for which he had risked his life. I did however instruct him to obtain permission from a beit din of three people which would annul the implicit vow of the tradition of his forbears that he had upheld all his life not to eat soaked matzah on Pesach. After we set up a beit din which annulled his “vow,” he proceeded to fulfill the mitzvah of eating an olive’s bulk of matzah together with all the others who, thanks to him, fulfilled this mitzvah. Although his whole body was aching from the beating the Nazis had inflicted upon him, there was no end to his joy and his thanks to G-d for granting him the privilege of eating matzah despite his wounds and his broken teeth. 4 A New Seder to the Seder Given our Current Situation - Perhaps we should make some adjustments to the Order of our Seder Ritual this year. Invite your guests to participate in making their own “charoset concoctions.” Have a small buffet table set aside with bowls filled with raisins, chopped apples, apricots, prunes, dates, figs, walnuts, almonds, bananas, parev chocolate chips, carob chips, honey, grape juice, wine, shredded coconut, sesame seeds, stewed fruits, ground ginger, etc. Also, have small bowls for every guest to use (plastic bowls are easy to use, especially for kids). People will love to make more than one concoction, so have lots of bowls ready! Have a few recipe cards set up on the buffet so people can put together some traditional recipes, but they can also create their own tasty concoctions and try new things.     UNDERSTANDING THE HISTORY OF THE HOLOCAUST II Jewish Resistance, Miracles & Righteous Gentiles n the first Morasha shiur on the Holocaust, we developed a rudimentary Iunderstanding of the horrors of the Holocaust and its irrevocable impact on the Jewish people. We will now turn our attention to some of the glimmers of hope that appeared during those dark days. It is important to dispel the myth that Jews went to their deaths passively, “like lambs to the slaughter.” For reasons that will be mentioned below, Jewish resistance was often spiritual rather than physical; the manner in which they retained their human spirit, and even their Jewish spirit, demonstrates strength of character that we can barely imagine. Most of the stories of Jewish courage were lost with their heroes. Some have been passed on to us. It is our duty to remember these stories, and internalize their messages. Furthermore, while the Holocaust was a time of unimaginable suffering and darkness for the Jewish people, many of those who survived (and even those who ultimately did not) experienced moments of salvation that were nothing short of miraculous. Stretched beyond the limits of physical endurance and facing the merciless, overwhelming brutality of the Nazis, many Jews found that their lives were saved in the most improbable ways. The history of the Holocaust is replete with such miracles, evidence that God was still with us even during that time of suffering. Finally, it is important to mention some of the non-Jewish heroes who risked their own lives to save Jews from certain death. Even at a time in history when the entire world seemed to have turned against the Jewish people, there were still isolated individuals who demonstrated both mercy and courage by extending themselves to save Jews.

Circa 1889 his parents moved to Boisk, Latvia, at that time the Rabbinical Seat of Rabbi Cook, olov hasholom. From there he went to Telz where he studied under the illustrious gaonim, Rabbi Eliezer Gordon, zt'l and Rabbi Shimon Shkop, zt'l. In Telz, he was noted for his unusual diligence and profound mind. After many years of intensive study in Telz, he went to Volozin to become a disciple of the great Reb Chaim Brisker who was Rosh yeshivah of Volozin at that time. In 1898, he married the daughter of one of the leading sages of the day, Rabbi Meir Atlas, zt'l, who was then the Rabbi of Salant. Then came a period which impressed itself indelibly on the rest of his life. It began in 1906 when he went to Radin, the home of his master, the world-renowned Chofetz Chaim, zt'l where he studied until 1908 in the Kollel Kodshim. The Chofetz Chaim had founded this select institution for the future leaders of Israel. During the year 1908-1909, Rav Elchonon, together with the gaon Rabbi Yoel Baranchick zt'l started a yeshivah in Amsislav, Russia. In 1910, he accepted a call to become a rosh yeshivah in Brisk, the home of his teacher, Rabbi Chaim, zt'l.

    The Lithuanian Jewish Community of Telšiai By Philip S. Shapiro1 Introduction This work had its genesis in an initiative of the “Alka” Samogitian Museum, which has undertaken projects to recover for Lithuanians the true history of the Jews who lived side-by-side with their ancestors. Several years ago, the Museum received a copy of the 500-plus-page “yizkor” (memorial) book for the Jewish community of Telšiai,2 which was printed in 1984.3 The yizkor book is a collection of facts and personal memories of those who had lived in Telšiai before or at the beginning of the Second World War. Most of the articles are written in Hebrew or Yiddish, but the Museum was determined to unlock the information that the book contained. Without any external prompting, the Museum embarked upon an ambitious project to create a Lithuanian version of The Telshe Book. As part of that project, the Museum organized this conference to discuss The Telshe Book and the Jewish community of Telšiai. This project is of great importance to Lithuania. Since Jews constituted about half of the population of most towns in provincial Lithuania in the 19th Century, a Lithuanian translation of the book will not only give Lithuanian readers a view of Jewish life in Telšiai but also a better knowledge of the town’s history, which is our common heritage. The first part of this article discusses my grandfather, Dov Ber Shapiro, who was born in 1883 in Kamajai, in the Rokiškis region, and attended the Telshe Yeshiva before emigrating in 1903 to the United States, where he was known as “Benjamin” Shapiro.

The students are divided into three groups, each assigned one of the halakhic problems taken up by Rabbi Oshry. A uniform eleven-item "worksheet" is given to all the groups. The items provide a foundation for analysis of the historical dimension of the issue. Each student is also given a "source sheet" that helps him or her deal with the issue at hand (a sheet with sources upon which R. Oshry based his halakhic decisions.) 3. By understanding these meanings, the educational community can better understand how a particular context and approach influences teacher meaning-making and the ways in which museum teacher education programs shape the learning of participants. Meaning- making is a process of interpretation and understanding experiences in ways that make sense to each individual teacher. Meanings that are formed may impact teachers’ pedagogic interpretation of the Holocaust, which may in turn shape their instructional practices. This instrumental case study used multiple interviews, observations, surveys and documents to explore the meanings teachers make about the Holocaust from participation in Holocaust professional development at a Jewish heritage museum. Participants in the study included nine teachers from public schools and private Jewish schools and two professional developers from the Museum. Each participant was interviewed three times, and six different professional development programs were observed over a period of six months. Programs typically lasted from one to six days and included a presentation by museum staff, Holocaust experts, and survivors. At any museum, each representation of the Holocaust conveys particular messages and mediates Holocaust history through a particular lens.

    The world of our ancestors: A study tour of Jewish Poland & Lithuania 27 August – 14 September 2020 Following four highly successful tours of Jewish Poland and Lithuania, the Jewish Museum of Australia is pleased to announce this tour will return in 2020 after a two-year break. It will be led by Paul Forgasz, who taught Jewish history for many years at Monash University’s Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation. Paul is well known as a presenter to many Limmud Oz audiences, and is a regular contributor to the Museum’s adult education program. He has led previous tours focusing on the Jews of Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain. What is special about this tour? As with any tour, you will visit various towns, cities, and sites of both Jewish and general historical interest. Local guides will be on hand to explain the features of these sites, whilst under Paul’s expert guidance, you will actively engage and interact with these places through the reading and analysis of texts and group discussions. At the same time, a series of study sessions will provide opportunities for in depth explorations of key issues and themes that have defined the Jewish Polish and Lithuanian encounter.     Dying Al Kiddush Hashem – Rabbi Efrem1 Goldberg – Boca Raton Synagogue Kaunas massacre of October 29, 1941 also known as the Great Action was the largest mass murder of Lithuanian Jews. By the order of SS-Standartenführer Karl Jäger and SS-Rottenführer Helmut Rauca, the Sonderkommando under the leadership of SS-Obersturmführer Joachim Hamann, and 8 to 10 men from Einsatzkommando 3, in collaboration with Lithuanian partisans, murdered 2,007 Jewish men, 2,920 women, and 4,273 children in a single day at the Ninth Fort, Kaunas, Lithuania. The Germans and Lithuanians destroyed the small ghetto on October 4, 1941, and killed almost all of its inhabitants at the Ninth Fort. Later that same month, on October 28, SS-Rottenführer Helmut Rauca of the Kaunas Gestapo (secret state police) conducted the selection in the Kaunas Ghetto. All ghetto inhabitants are forced to assemble in a central square of the ghetto. Rauca selected 9,200 Jewish men, women, and children, about one-third of the ghetto population. The next day, October 29, they shot these people at the Ninth Fort in huge pits dug in advance. (Wikipedia) Rabbi Ephraim Oshry (1914–2003) While in the Kaunas Ghetto and Concentration Camp, Rabbi Oshry began writing his responsa to the Holocaust, answering very difficult questions concerning human nature, God, and Jewish ethics. Before the final battle between the Nazis and the Soviets, he buried his responsa in the ground. After the war, he retrieved them and ultimately - in 1959 - he published some of those Hebrew responsa under the title: She'eilos Uteshuvos Mima'amakim (Questions and Responses from the Depths).
