Good but very shortBy RedInkBlotAs someone who has seen the series this book comes up short. The first fight the cyborgs get into is only a few pages long before it's over. The second fight feels like even less. Then they confront black ghost. It skips over anything involving the other cyborgs past and only has them fight two other cyborgs. It only gives one page that briefly describes who all the other cyborgs are.If it was a longer book that was more fleshed out with details of would be great but given the price I can understand why it's as short as it is. Just wish it would have at least ended where a part one book would end and given us more books with this style rather than rushing through it as fast as possible.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Westernized Cyborg 009: Still AwesomeBy cmccrzySince I first started watching this, I always wondered what "Cyborg 009" would look like if it was not done in such a cartoony style, and that's what this is. It's the same characters with basically the same plot outline and background for different characters with a Western art style. The art is beautiful and the entire comic is in color, and it's very long. It's very large and the cover is very nice. The front has a layer-by-layer take down for how their bodies work and there are notes about what started this whole project and the creator's relation with "Cyborg 009".If you have read the manga, you will be familiar with the story and the way the narrative and script moves. It's a little corny at times, but this is "Cyborg 009". What do you expect? There have been some changes. The way technology is depicted is updated a bit and some of the backstories are slightly changed, although Joe's seems to be the one with the most differences. The ending makes you really want more of the story to explain what you're looking at (not because it doesn't make sense, but because you're left with a very big AM I LOOKING AT WHAT I THINK I'M LOOKING AT??), while tying back into the manga, but it's also a good ending if they just want to leave it standalone. The character remodels are also interesting, especially 002. Personally, I like them a lot.If you're a "Cyborg 009" fan, you SHOULD buy this. I've heard that this is to pull interest back towards the franchise, and that there's the possibility that they'll republish the manga, in its entirety and possibly one or more of the anime, back in the US. It's an enjoyable What If? retelling of the beginning of the series with a number of familiar faces. If you're an outsider in the whole thing, pick this up. It's very fun and another band of unlikely heroes coming together to fight a big evil story. And if you're curious about the rest of the series, try watching the most recent anime. There's also a film that's supposed to come to the US sometime soon called "009 RE:CYBORG", which is another more modern retelling/continuation of the story, and that has a manga adaptation of its own.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. He realizes that he is not alone in this dilemma; there were eight before him, who all possess different non-human abilities....and, as you could probably gather, that also includes our main character. But there's more to their situation, including experimentation and destructive plans of one very evil criminal mastermind-to say the least. The art is great, the characters are all lovable, and the plot is clear and straightforward. All in all I really loved reading Cyborg 009- I did buy this for my 18-year old sister, who loves sci-fi, anime, superheros, adventure- the whole thing; however, we found that this book is probably best suited for a younger audience, as the story line is simple. All in all, it's a great story and I'd definitely recommend it! Shotaro Ishinomori's popular manga classic is reimagined for a new generation! Awakening in a futurist military installation with no memory of who he is or how he got there, a young man known only as CYBORG 009 has been stripped by his captors not only his freedom, but also his humanity. His body augmented by cybernetic technology, CYBORG 009 joins forces with eight other men and women, CYBORG 001-008, and set off on a journey to learn the truth of why they were turned into weapons of mass destruction, and to prevent a conflict that could very well be the start of World War III! Written by F.J. DeSanto (The Spirit, Insurgent) and Bradley Cramp (Gattaca, Lord of War) and stunningly illustrated by Marcus To (Batwing, Huntress, Red Robin) and Ian Herring (Jim Henson's Tale of Sand), Archaia and Ishimori Productions are proud to present this incredible new take on one of the most famous manga titles of all time, created by legendary artist Shotaro Ishinomori! Featuring an exclusive afterward exploring the history of Cyborg 009 and the artistic legacy of prolific manga legend Shotaro Ishinomori, this hardcover volume features a transparent cover that gives the reader a glimpse inside the Cyborg team's mechanically augmented bodies. From BooklistOnce an assistant to Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori went on to become one of Japan’s most influential manga artists. His Cyborg 009 is now considered a classic example of sci-fi storytelling. This iteration of the story begins with Joe awakening in a lab after having been turned into a cyborg with only a shred of his humanity left. Joe manages to escape the facility alongside the eight cyborgs created before him, and together the newly formed team must try to stop the Black Ghost, the organization that stole their lives and turned them into living weapons. This reimagining of the first few story arcs of the original manga is crowded with characters, shifting quickly between exposition and action. The gorgeous artwork is all Western, with only a smattering of the original shonen-style art showing up in the endpapers and afterword. Considering the story is 50 years old and helped shape the direction of superhero-team comics today, there are few surprises. But for teens without dozens of years of reading behind them, this is a solid introduction to a legendary character. Grades 9-12. --Eva VolinAbout the AuthorShotaro Inoshimori was a Japanese manga artist who became an influential figure in manga, anime, and tokusatsu, creating several immensely popular long-running series such as Cyborg 009 and Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, what would go on to become part of the Super Sentai series, and the Kamen Rider Series.
