Railroads of Landenberg
Winter 2014 Issue Railroads of Landenberg By Chris Black It was 12:05 on October 19, 1872 when the first train on the Wilmington and Western Railroad reached its final destination in the village of Landenberg. A large crowd of the Townspeople gathered, dressed in their best outfits, to cheer on the dignitaries, public officials, and the press as they stepped down from the train. The procession marched up the Landenberg hill to beat the beat of Wilmington’s Independent Cornet Band. When they reached the home of Charles Weiler, the general superintendent of the Landenberger Mills, there were speeches and a lavish reception. Joshua T. Heald, President of the Wilmington and Western Railroad, spoke not only of how proud he was of the work up to Landenberg, but of an optimistic future for this small railroad as it continued west. The Wilmington and Western Railroad was chartered in 1867 by a Corporate Board with the hope it would travel to Landenberg, The village of Landenberg as seen in about 1905 from the vantage point of the Pomeroy and Newark railroad track crossing over Landenber road. A newly rebuilt Lancaster, York, Pittsburgh and (1898) road bridge crossing the White Clay Creek connected Landenberg's business eventually far to the west in the district with residential homes on the eatern hill rising from it. Keeping the Coast Clear: Lessons About Protecting the Natural Environment by Controlling Industrial Development Under Delaware's Coastal Zone Act KENNETH T. KRISTL* In 1970, as the nation celebrated the first Earth Day, the State of Delaware stood at a proverbial fork in the road concerning its then largely undeveloped coastal area. Shell Oil was poised to begin construction of Delaware's second large oil refinery, this one to be located next to the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.1 Zapata Norness, a bulk shipping company, was planning to build a 300 acre island in the Delaware Bay for staging shipments of bulk quantities of coal and iron ore. 2 The United States Depart- ment of Commerce was working with oil and shipping companies to make the Delaware Bay "the premier supertanker port and in- dustrial center in the East.' 3 Thus, Delaware had a choice: to in- dustrialize its coastal areas (much like its neighbors New Jersey and Pennsylvania had done farther up the Delaware River), or to restrict such industrialization and preserve the natural resources of the coast. -

June 9, 2017 Mr. Troy Brestel Project Engineer Development Coordination DelDOT Division of Planning P O Box 778 Dover, DE 19903 RE: Agreement No. 1774 Project Number T201769002 Traffic Impact Study Services Task 4A-Fort DuPont Redevelopment Dear Mr. Brestel: Johnson, Mirmiran and Thompson (JMT) has completed the review of the Traffic Impact Study (TIS) for the Fort DuPont Redevelopment, prepared by Duffield Associates, Inc. This task was assigned Task Number 4A. Duffield Associates, Inc. prepared the report in a manner generally consistent with DelDOT’s Development Coordination Manual. The TIS evaluates the impacts of a mixed-use development proposed in Delaware City, New Castle County, on the east side of Delaware Route 9 (New Castle Road 2) between the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and the Delaware City Branch Canal. Subsequent to the October 19, 2016, Scoping Meeting at DelDOT, the proposed uses have been modified. Per the TIS, the mixed use consists of 50 single-family detached houses, 105 townhouses, 100 condominiums, 161 low-rise apartment units, an 85-bed assisted care facility, a 25-room hotel, a 13,000 square-foot museum, 141,000 square feet of office space, a 4,720 square-foot government office building, 75,572 square feet of retail, and a 9,800 square-foot quality restaurant. The development will be constructed in two separate phases where Phase 1 will consist of 42 single-family detached houses and 49 townhouses. Phase 1 is expected to be constructed by 2020 and the final phase of construction is anticipated to be completed by 2024. Two access points are proposed for the development: a roundabout at the intersection of Delaware Route 9/New Castle Avenue/Polktown Place (New Castle Road 2A) and a full access at the intersection of Wilmington Avenue/Polktown Place. -

Delaware Revolutionary Tax Lists from the Delaware Public Archives Subcommittee of Revolutionary Taxes, Genealogy Committee, National Society Sons of the American Revolution John D. Sinks, Harold Ford, and Tilghman McCabe, Jr. March 17, 2016 Purpose of the Report Background. The state of Delaware first passed tax laws in 1777. There were earlier colonial laws, but of course none of them were passed to support the Revolution or to address requests of the Continental Congress. The Delaware tax lists that provide evidence of Patriotic Service for the Sons of the American Revolution must date between 1777 and 1783 inclusive. Every state tax levied by Delaware from 1777 through 1783, supported the War, including some that addressed a request of the Continental Congress. This included retiring bills of credit, an action requested several times by the Continental Congress in order to maintain the financial underpinnings of the Revolution. A colonial law authorizing counties to levy taxes to support civil functions remained in effect throughout the Revolution, so there is a need to distinguish county taxes (which do not provide evidence of Patriotic Service), from state taxes and combined county and state taxes (which do provide evidence of Patriotic Service). The Delaware Public Archives has custody of a number of Revolutionary tax records for the three counties of the state as well as county levy court records. These records include lists of assessments made from 1777 through 1783 as well as lists of delinquents for Kent County. By virtue of delinquency for a tax supporting the War, a taxpayer does not qualify for patriotic service even if the tax supporting the War was paid late.
