Dictyota Adnata Zanardini (Phaeophyceae) - a New Record from the Sundarbans Mangrove Forests, Bangladesh

Among several forms was found a tightly prostrate brown alga occurring on moist parts of mangrove plants and clayey soil. Flattened brownish thalli tightly attached to pneumatophores and lower parts of mangrove trunks, spreading and branching dichotomously, sometimes overlapping and attached by means of unbranched marginal and sub-marginal rhizoids were collected. Distinct marginal sori are well developed in fertile specimens. On the basis of these characters, the sample has been identified as Dictyota adnata Zanardini which is herein reported as a new record for Bangladesh. The Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove ecosystem that is shared by India and Bangladesh fronting the vast Bay of Bengal to the south representing a unique ecosystem showcasing an astounding floral and faunal assemblage that is constantly exposed to various anthropogenic and natural threats (Aziz and Paul 2015). The rich biodiversity and largest contiguous forests of the Sundarbans were recognized when large portions of it were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as a Ramsar site. The algal flora within the Sundarbans was first studied by Islam (1973) who documented 35 species, most of them belonging to the “Bostrychietum” group. -

Joan XXIII s/n, 08028 Barcelona, Spain b Department of Biology & Marine Biology, University of North Carolina Wilmington, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, North Carolina 28403-3915, USA (Received 15 July 2010, Accepted 18 October 2010) Abstract – The DNA-localizing fluorochrome DAPI (4’, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) and chicken erythrocytes standard (RBC) were used with image analysis and static microspectro- photometry to estimate nuclear DNA contents in 14 species and varieties of Dictyotales from the Atlantic Ocean (Spain and USA) and the Mediterranean Sea (Spain). Negligible diffe- rences were found between specimens fixed in Carnoy’s solution (EtOH) and methanol- Carnoy’s (methacarn). Present and previously published nuclear DNA content estimates expand our database to include 17 species and varieties representing seven genera with a 2C range of 0.7 – 1.7 pg. Intraplant variation (endopolyploidy) was observed in most isolates and 8C nuclei were quantified in five species. In four species, fluorescence intensity (If) levels in 2C gametophyte nuclei were found to closely approximate 50% of 4C values in vegetative cells of mature sporophytes, consistent with meiosis and a sexual life history in diplobiontic algae. Availability of consensus higher-level phylogenetic trees for Dictyotales has opened the way for determining evolutionary trends in DNA amounts. -

IV, XXXVIII (2), 2014, pp. 245 -264 GIANCARLO BELLISSIMO & C ARLA ORESTANO CHANGES IN THE BENTHIC ALGAL FLORA AND VEGETATION OF A SEMI-ENCLOSED MEDITERRANEAN COASTAL LAGOON (STAGNONE DI MARSALA, WESTERN SICILY) SUMMARY A study of the benthic macroalgal flora and vegetation of the Stagnone di Marsala (Trapani) has been performed in order to provide an up-to-date review of the status of and verify main changes that have occurred in the area over the past three decades. The flora of this study was poorer in taxa than that of literature (94 taxa against 108), with an increase in Chlorophyta and a decrease in Rhodophyta and Phaeophyceae. Only 48 taxa in the present flora have been previously reported, while 46 are new for the Stagnone. Among these, it was noteworthy, from both floristic and ecolog - ical point of view, the record for the first time of Cystoseira compressa (Esper) Gerloff & Nizamud - din and the invasive algae Caulerpa cylindracea Sonder and Lophocladia lallemandii (Montagne) F. Schmitz. On the contrary, 60 taxa previously reported have not been detected during the present study. Among these, Lamprothamnium papulosum (Wallroth) Groves and Cystoseira barbata (Stack - house) C. Agardh f. aurantia (Kützing) Giaccone have been the most significant disappearances. High degree of confinement and sediment composition were the major factors affecting number of taxa and abundance of the phytobenthic communities, with maximum values in the stations charac - terized by a good water exchange and/or presence of Cystoseira assemblages. As a result of the effects of global warming over the past few years, noticeable changes in composition and structure of phytobenthic communities in the lagoon have been observed and some hypotheses of expected changes are here proposed. -

Research under the Campaigns “AÇORES/89”, “PICO/91”, “PICOBEL/2007” and “LAUMACAT/2011” covered a relatively large area (approximately 39 km2 ) around the island, encompassing the littoral and sublittoral levels down to about 40 m around the Island. -
